Nice shots! Product photography would bore me, so I haven't tried it. But I have purchased the 105 1.8 Z and want to learn to shoot some sort of nature/street macro with it! Next project. The Z6III will probably be perfect for you as a You Tuber because of the video specs. Exclusive stills shooters like me will be more interested in the Z7III but very happy with the Z8/ZF for now!
Haha I am not a product photographer by any means, these shots just make selling old gear more fun. I love the resolution and feature set of the Z8, just want a smaller body without too many compromises. Looking forward to the announcement next week!

@@BokehTherapy Amen to that my friend! Still doing my best to figure out the first light everyone learns first about - daylight aka our sun. Currently dipping my toe into shooting film without light meter with sunny 16. since I’m at the beginning, it’s quite hard to estimate the right exposure, but like you I do my best to keep learning 👍

Thanks for the nudge 🎉 and nice shots Jack! I don’t do a lot of product shots but I do own two original Vivian Maier pieces ❤. In 2009 I was a follower of John Malouf’s original blog post. I kept following and then I started my street photography group here in Atlanta because of something called the “Global Vivian Meier shoot out” which was a one day events where everyone tried to shoot like her. My group just kept going and survived up until the pandemic. There are a few of us still occasionally getting together today. I also have wondered what kept Vivian going. It’s amazing to think that she had zero feedback until close to the end of her life and that was just from one shopkeeper who planned on collaborating with her on her postcards idea. I think based on what I know about her personality she was just stubborn! It was something that came from within and she did not see another way. I think we all have a little something to learn from her. Thank you for keeping up with your own path and sharing it with us!
Vivian is a true inspiration, but it took me a while to reconcile how I feel about the whole situation around the discovery of her work. How she persisted and kept getting better without any feedback is truly remarkable. I would love to go on a photowalk with your group, that sounds amazing!
@@BokehTherapy it took me a while to reconcile that as well. When I saw the film and realized that she had actual conversations about doing some things with her work, that helped resolve some of it for me. Well next time you’re in Atlanta, Georgia you’re welcome to join our group…. 😊.

Thanks for another insightful video! I recently on the 105 105mm f/2.8 VRS Macro and have been using it for product style shots and shots of miniatures I paint and it has been great. It is a huge lens compared to the Fuji lenses I have used in the past though :D
I haven’t tried the 105mm, looks like a superb lens! Do you use studio lights or natural lights for these shots? Would love to see some!
@@BokehTherapy it is a great lens! I usually use led panel lights, set to 5700K, but I am still quite a novice at it.

The Nikkor 55mm f/3.5 macro is the one lens I can use on a full-frame camera for street and product photography.

Yes, for Nikon F-mount. Great lens for still lifes, products, close-ups, macro, medical/scientific, and street photography.
The dive into F mount glass will be a long process haha. Lots of amazing options
I really enjoy your channel and messaging. It's both a fresh approach and very well executed to your vision. Cudos to you for successfully blending art + commerce. My unsolicited thoughts regarding your product photography strategy with the purpose of buying/selling gear for profit [based on my +40 year carrier as a commercial photographer] would be to limit your "set" images to one, with the detail shots being more uniform and sterile. Meaning, use a photo illustration [your set with props and dramatic lighting] to tell the story of the item, then provide a series of well executed simple backdrop detail shots illustrating the items condition. Why? A few reasons: 1- it makes the set image stand out more and make a statement. If every shot is in a set, then it looks like you have too much time on your hands and the impact is lessened. Get creative and really tell a story with the photo illustration, you want to build the emotional joy of fulfilling a vision with its use. Tell a story. 2- a simple seamless "studio" backdrop [or similar] set of images serve as a mental break and provides a no-nonsense supporting story to your claims on condition and justifying your asking price. This strategy hits both the potential buyer's emotional side and intellectual side. But hey, you're doing awesome as-is my friend, so more power to you!

Product photography is difficult for me. It’s probably one aspect I need to work on so I can sell all the stuff I hoard 😂 judging by some of the comments, I may need to get in to a 100mm lens, I might go with the Lumix do to it’s compact size.
Can’t tell you how many takes I needed to make this video haha. Product photos are so hard, nothing but respect for the pros that do this. I have a huge backlog of stuff to sell this weekend!

I'll chime in - product photographer here who also has to sell their gear sometimes! I like to use my Nikon Z MC 105mm 2.8 because for a professional looking product shot you want to be far away from the item you're shooting for a perspective where the item looks more flat. I've gone all out on white seamless on acrylic reflection but now I actually intentionally make the setup look a little amateur so the buyer doesn't mistake the photos as something I pulled off of the product website; what I'll do is intentionally have the background show a seam so that it's not seamless. For camera gear that is all black, it's important to use large white sources of light (either softbox/window/reflector) from at least three directions (top and sides) so that way you get uniform lifting of the blacks. The opposite would be to use a small point light source, which would give you a product that looks like it has a lot of highlights but overall very dark. I'll also raise the blacks a bit so that it increases visibility on the details of the product. I find that product on white is better than a lifestyle shot where the item looks like it's been used. Basically I try to convey visually to the user the idea that the equipment has barely been touched and has just sat in a climate controlled room since day 1, and that the photos look great not because I'm a great photographer (even though I am :p) but because the item I'm selling is just so pristine.

@@BokehTherapy If you'd like to use just one light, you could also get two reflectors and place them on top of your subject like the roof of a house and then have the light point upwards. Position of light is above subject slightly in front of it. I think the way you used window light and the zhiyun as a fill on the right is also a good idea but I would personally dial it to be the same color temperature as your daylight. I personally think that fill light really should be the same color temperature whereas it's more okay to having a different color accent/kicker light. As always, love the channel!

Haha no I don’t have early access! I’m speaking with a few contacts to get more details, but it’s all radio silence from them until embargo is lifted.
But selling second thing shouldn't be so professionally shot or else people will thought it's a scam, a picture taken off the internet instead of a real thing of your possession, right?
I’m glad you think it looks professional, I still have a lot to learn! A commercial photographer said one lifestyle shot paired with some more basic shots is a nice approach. I will list the lens with these photos soon so let’s see how I go!

The pro product photographers on this thread all seem to love longer focal lengths. The 105mm looks amazing but it is huge compared to the 26mm!
