So many memories! This was the Octet of my day. It's highly likely I was one of those in the audience laughing. I never missed a performance if I could help it. Thank you for posting this!

Not laughing would have ruined the live performance which is clearly intended to be both humorous and a vocal tour de force. It was not created for youtube (which didn't even exist at the time I was in the audience! 2000 - 2003). Telling an audience member that reacting to a live performance ruined it? Perhaps to the viewer who watches 20 years later but the performers loved the response.
