Ep226: Ecclesiastical Crackdown On BYU Professors? Why I Left w/ Former BYU Professor Jason Bergman
On this episode of Mormonish Podcast, Rebecca and Landon are joined by former BYU professor Jason Bergman who appeared in the recent Salt Lake Tribune article discussing the ecclesiastical crackdown on BYU professors.
Professor Bergman saw fist hand the increasingly tight grasp BYU had on it's professors, starting with Elder Holland's "Musket Talk" which Bergman attended, the new "Loyalty Oath" that employees had to sign, and increasingly concerning changes to faculty employment.
Professor Bergman chose to leave his position at BYU after the situation became intolerable for him personally. He knew these new restrictions would not allow him to be the kind of teacher he wanted to be for his s...

On this episode of Mormonish Podcast, Rebecca and Landon are joined by Master Peace, Ron Yorgason as we explore reincarnation theology in the early Mormon church. Ron explains this emerging concept of multiple mortalities and plural p...

Thank you❤
Great job Rebecca & Landon! Your interview with Jason was wonderful! My heart 💜 goes out to Jason. He wanted to stay at the Y but the leadership made it ethically impossible for him to do so. Nobody can perform at their best living in perpetual fear their economic and professional lives could be decimated at any moment, by anybody.
Brigham young was a racist.but his name on a university is ok? But hey lets get the gays....what a crock...😢😢😢
Such a great episode
I’m a never mo, and the insight from this podcast is so eye opening!
BYU cleaning House. Why did they tolerate the nonsense for so long?
Teaching economics does not require faith in Joseph Smith. This isn’t house cleaning. This is paranoia.
I’m not insensitive to the dilemma that employees of BYU are placed in if they have serious issues with school/church policy and how it impacts their careers, retirements, etc. but I sure respect Jason’s decision to resign from BYU rather than compromise his integrity. My hope is that anyone at BYU that is not comfortable working there can find employment somewhere they can be happy and fulfilled. I also understand the emotional impact and extreme disappointment one feels when an institution they once believed in lets them down. Welcome to the party.
As one of the never-Mo's who almost never misses an episode, nope, nothing the leaders say or do shocks me. Offends me, yes. But none of it surprises me. Power corrupts. I enjoy watching the steady stream of people finding their way out of indoctrination and getting to enjoy being the good people they always intended to be.
Great interview & glad timing & career opportunities worked out so well for you. Interesting to learn they are weeding out non-LDS professors? Non-LDS was recently promoted to head cross country coach, and there’s a few articles online about how the board of trustees approved that she was a “good fit for mission of byu” & athletic Director saying he changed the policy of active LDS members only for head coach. She has won a few national championships for the school so I’m sure that helps!
Yeah I remembered being told that but not by my parents. Watch TV then I told you that we get to the point where we get so angry that we have to yell at you now don’t make me get to that point go and watch another TV show. Go watch RUclips RUclips go watch RUclips camera do you understand? The camera is facing the wrong directionthere’s no camera there.
Great show. Thank you!
Not speaking of Jason, but if someone will not support Church doctrine in their teaching at a church sponsored school they likely should leave. They are accepting a paycheck from tithing funds. They should be honest.
Of course these same people are contributing to tithing funds so maybe they should have a say in policies.
How is a testimony needed for an economics professor, or a professor of linguistics?
I'm sure this information is useful for the wider world outside Mormonism, dictatorships are normally closed systems, your broadcasts show their internal workings.
Unbelievable!
Thanks Jason!
❤
Why would I allow my Bishop to be in charge of my temporal well being when I don’t let him get near my spiritual well being. Stay clear, stay safe and keep your sanity.
Loyalty oath... [sigh]... My gosh... Doesn't anybody respect the baptismal (and weekly sacramental) covenant anymore? Apparently not a good enough oath to satisfy today's Church leaders... Gotta sign on for the more-serious-than-baptismal- covenant Church loyalty oath to be a teacher at BYU now... I like how Book-of-Mormon Jesus kept it simple--faith, humility, repentance, baptism, Holy Ghost-- and he intentionally kept it that simple to avoid "stir[ring] up the hearts of men with anger." I'm pretty sure he would denounce requiring these beyond-baptismal-covenant loyalty oaths at his university. Seems kinda disrespectful to the baptismal covenant in my opinion. "Such things should be done away." (See 3 Nephi 11:29-40)
I am wondering if the Upper Church leadership actually believes in the Gospel when they treat their member's salvation (who's future offspring's also depend on them for their salvation,) so cavalierly, as if it never mattered in the first place. This seems so strange, given the ferver and urgency with which the gospel is promoted. The only reasonable motive left, it seems, is that the top leadership's interest is mainly in their own consolidation of power, prestige, and wealth. What a small and shallow reward. Loyalty and integrity is never at odds unless something is seriously wrong with what is being asked by the leader.
❤
Jason is one of the most amazing people I’ve been privileged to know! Met him when he was bishop in MS while I was on my mission. Love your bravery of sharing this with the world, brother! You’re such a role model to me!
Growing up, my family changed out of church clothes right away. Then I went to BYU and one of my roommates stayed dressed up all day. Before then, I had no idea that was something people did! And of course I was so eager to be righteous I started doing it too.
This policy practically mandates dishonesty in the faculty member !
Or they can quit instead of compromising their integrity.
So glad BYU has the guts to do this!! 🥳
You definitely didn’t see the article and what it was actually saying.
Pro-suffering of vulnerable populations and a police state? Not gonna work, especially when it comes to modern women…. The centenarians in charge of the ‘church’ cannot put the information genie back in the bottle. This policy will just lose the ‘church’ talented professors and students and trash the quality of the school. The Y will not be able to compete with other universities. This will be especially problematic when it comes to the medical school. What ‘church’ sets up a scenario where families can permanently separated for eternity and leverages it to control their believers thoughts, actions and incomes for a lifetime? In my mind that is not a ‘church’…
Thanks for sharing Jason. The louder the better.
Rebecca, I really appreciate you and I love all of your work, but it’s okay for there to be a few seconds of silence. You’re doing the John Dehlin thing and talking over your guests, and it’s starting to get in the way of the message.
John D. is notorious for interrupting his guests making his interviews turn into the Dehlin Show! I agree about Rebecca talking over Landon. Errgh.😮 Settle down and relax! 🧘
Came here to say the same thing. You talked way more than your guest. You already know what you know. You need to let your guest tell you what he knows so that we can all learn from him.
Yeah, it was a pretty dynamic and fast moving conversation! We’ve been chatting with him during the day and our enthusiasm boiled over! I’m sure that other podcasts have more of a monologue with their guest, but that’s not our style and since we’re all good friends this is how we communicate. I understand our podcast style isn’t for everyone!
@@PatriciaNoel-qp2ff when we have a topic like this, it’s hard to relax. I worked at BYU for decades so Jason and I have been talking about this all day. We definitely are passionate about the topic. I understand our back-and-forth style isn’t for everyone. I know there are other podcast where it’s more of a monologue with the guests. Everyone has their own style.
@@CL_Wilson in this particular podcast it was a very heated topic with both of us having experience at BYU so we were sharing stories. This is how we set up the podcast to go. I understand the style of our podcast isn’t for everyone.
An aside note: my son is presently studying for his DMA in classical saxophone @ University of Southern Mississippi. Small world!
Thank you Jason for your courage in telling your story!
People make the institution culture.
CONTROL, CONTROL, CONTROL.
Will lose the MC more and more faithful….
Can I find out if I’m still on the count as a “Mormon “I think I send a request but never heard back.
Talk to the ward clerk in your area.
Hugh Nibley was right when he said watch out for the managers
AWESOME!!!!
I LOVE the INTRO!!!!!!!
Right!
I don’t understand how they think that they will run a medical school
Embarrassing that med school is to be named after ‘world famous’ egotistical Heart doc/prophet RMN, who refused to call 911 & do cpr while 1st wife Dantzel suffered fatal heart attack. WTH?! Think celestial & GTH RMN!
Embarrassing that the med school will be named after Heart doc RMN, who refused to call 911 & do cpr while 1st wife Dantzel suffered fatal heart attack, according to Bill Reel & RMN end of Oct podcast. WTH?! Think celestial, but GTH RMN!
That’s going to be very problematic, stay tuned…
No trust. No honesty. No charity. No love!!
@1:25:12 We've had background checks here for over 20 years, and the Church doesn't complain. Everyone who has a calling, from Sunday School to Primary to Bishoprics, has to pass a 'Working with Children' check before being sustained. I think the system works well, although it won't catch new offenders until they are convicted.
How is it that women, who are atleast 50% of the population, are considered minority?! Title IX needs to step in & Stop the homophobia, sexism & racism!!
Let me get this right, the leaders of the Church are expecting the professors to follow the doctrine of the church at a LDS Church school.. The Tribune has always been antagonistic towards the church. You can't tell me the author isn't a little biased in her reporting of this.
Peggy Fletcher Stack the Trib religious reporter is an active member of the church so she probably is a little biased. Of course she tried to get the church’s explanation for these draconian measures and not a single spokesman for the church, BYU or any staff member would go on record on the subject. Why might that be?
To shackle the human mind is the goal of evil.
This is the One Thing The LDS Church is correct about.... and it goes all the way back to The Beginning. (BUT...that assumes that ALL that happened THEN and SINCE actually is based on reality and NOT just made up, carried over, expanded Religious belief.)( WE KNOW that Modern Humans existed LONG BEFORE the "Adam & Eve Story"... SO Adam and Eve and who knows what else that followed, may ALL JUST BE MADE UP.) The LDS Church operates on a The Patriarchal Order and WILL NEVER grant "The Priesthood" to women....or call them into positions of Priesthood Authority. This is one of the NEVER EVER EVER changes The Church will NEVER make. They may try to make tweaks or use the most positive language towards Women... but they will not change.
I'm so mormon I lived next door to chad daybell for a short time.
Shame on the Mormon cult/church
How can they get away with impeding on the employee’s personal lives like this? Insanity.
The intro-voices are killing me!!!! I almost threw my phone when it was Brad🤮Wilcox.
1:30 didn’t we just see that statistically, the more likely it is that children will be abused by pastors priests and Mormon church leaders than people who don’t believe. Seems to contradict what they’re teaching children.
What about those faculty members who are women? Do they have to be interviewed at byu with their spouse too? So now your spouse has to be a card holding member in order for you to get a job there? That’s wild! Your spouse is interviewed for your job?!!! What if you are in a mixed faith marriage? Not allowed?
I don’t pander to the Gay community, it only emboldens their lifestyle.
I'm old enough when we had split meetings, Priesthood then Sunday School. Then home ( but interviews, planning meetings etc. so no changing, once it became block meetings, dress meetings change...
Thank you for voicing- wishing when people died they knew they were wrong! I have thought that for years! Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, J Smith and the rest of the prophets, the loony murderous Daybells, the Lafferty brothers, all the popes, the list is endles😡 They will never know they were wrong, strikes me as one of the most disappointing truths in life.
