Lapua X Act and Polar Biathlon A Winters Day Comparison
A consistency comparison between Lapua X-ACT and Lapua Polar Biathlon.
Premium Vudoo V22 with Ace barrel.
50 Yard range.
The conditions: Cold temperature below freezing. Winds 1-3 MPH initially, picked up to 3-5 MPH by end of shoot. Temperature steadily dropped as well. Weather channel advised Winter Warnings and reported moderate to heavy snowfall to begin in 90 minutes. That gave me enough time to set up and shoot 30 rounds of each type. By the time I was halfway through with the Polar Biathlon I could not feel the end of my trigger finger and resorted to mostly 'jerking' the trigger as opposed to a controlled squeeze. That seemed to work ok.

25 Round Groups Sampling For Consistency SK and Lapua
Просмотров 1,8 тыс.2 месяца назад
5 groups. 25 rounds each group. Premium ammunition; SK Standard Plus, SK Rifle Match, Lapua Center-X, Lapua Midas and Lapua X-ACT. Having no good way to calculate the 'mean radius' (MR) of each group (due to shooting out the middle', I thought I could visualize the general shape of the distribution as an indicator of potential accuracy. Looking at the results it seems to me that is reasonably t...

Eley Tenex Lot Testing For CZ 457 MTR
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.3 месяца назад
12 Lots of Eley Tenex were tested today for group size, pattern and precision. Two five shot groups of each lot were done. Two lots were deemed better than the others, showing better size and consistency. One of the two groups had a bit of vertical spread (but still measuring well), while the other showed a more ideal 'rounded' distribution. The CZ 457 MTR has a 26" Lilja barrel and a JARD trig...

I rarely shoot target at 100 yards. 50, 40, 20 and 17 yards being my usual. Two shooting friends have told me how much they enjoyed being on a 100 yard small bore weekly shoot this season. I was shown the IBS 200 yard Hunter Rifle target which is used for the small bore 100 yard weekly. 50 points per bull, 250 points for perfect score and 'x' for touch or obliterate center dot. CZ 457 MTR Build Head Space Shimmed for Eley

This CZ 457 MTR is fitted with a 26" Lilja Match barrel. Headspace was set at .040" with a .003" shim on the tenon. The bolt face depth was measured at 1.238". An attempt was made to shim the headspace to .038" but bolt would not close. If went to .039" head space there may be a bit of 'crush' on the rim, therefore .040" was chosen and works well. As seen in the video a Forster .043" 'Go' gauge...

This CZ 457 started out as a beautiful 457 Varmint. It shot well and felt super in hand. A decision was made to modify it with a MTR stock, a Lilja 26" match barrel configured for .043" headspace, changing to a 3 ounce JARD trigger, and adding a front bag adapter purpose made for Lithgow LA 101 found on ebay.AU that fits perfectly. I contemplated describing the trigger press, the feel of the blade, break crispness, etc. But I feel the video of the actual sque...

Hi, in Australia a brick of Center x Polar Biathlon n is $341 and a brick of X-ACT is $539 its madness
As of this post Polar Biathlon supply seems to be nearly exhausted in US on my search ,with the price at approximately $195 USD. X-ACT is not available anywhere with the last internet prices listed being approximately $350 USD. A very recent RUclips video from The Gunslinger 4570 interviewing the Lapua rep at Shot Show 2025 reveals worldwide demand affecting supply. This most likely results in premium pricing. A brick can go pretty fast! Thanks for the insight.
I dabble with precision.22 and my son is big in competition shooting so I’ve shot lots of ANSCHÜTZ rifles and there are definitely levels to them. We’re currently running an 1827 F and a 1910 super match neither are your basic ANSCHÜTZ bench rifle they are the higher end very specific single shot rifles while I don’t shoot well enough to do them justice standing from a bench I can get 10 round groups in .24-.26 inch at 50 yards with a diopter sight (and tenex ammo). In my experience the ANSCHÜTZ bench rest rifles while outstanding pale in comparison to their higher end biathlon rifles it’s impressive that voodoo can keep up with them though (they’ve got years of experience) and stay in the same price range as a ANSCHÜTZ bench rifle. I’d really be interested in seeing how the comparison to the top of the line $8-9k rifles when you get down to measuring .002 inches repeatable. But I’ve got to be honest I’m biased we’ve probably got a little over 20k wrapped up in two rifles, sights, weight blocks and other equipment so I’m an invested fanboy.
Very interesting! I have never shot a biathlon rifle but would like the experience one day. I do shoot at a 20 yard indoor range where biathlon shooting occurs and some of the targets left on the counter show results equal to high end bench rifles with high power glass! Thanks for the comment!
Thanks for the video. The groups look similar. Been doing some research it's hard to find good ammo near where I live. There's a shop that has x act and thinking about getting some. Getting into biathlon 50 meters with diopter sights is hard.
If you would zero 1” high or low you would always be aiming at the same perfect aiming point. When you change the shape of the aiming point cannot aim as precisely
Where did you order this rifle from? I cannot find it anywhere
Rifle is not on the Steyr website as far as I can find
www.steyr-arms.com/en/hunting-rifles/zephyr-ii/
I’ve tried two times on different ammo, got two different settings and will probably have to try again at some point. The art of frustration 🤔
Thanks for the effort to produce an informative result.
Great video. I have been shooting 30 shot groups also so it was very interesting to see your results. Great shooting and it’s safe to say you’d see even tighter groups in better conditions. Well done and thanks for the video.
Awesome video, Ultra! 👏 I had to grab more hot coffee and a blanket watching this 😄 🤣 I wonder if the Biathlong group would have been smaller if it was your first group before you froze, lol Great shooting, and thanks for getting out in that mess to make us all a video 😊🎉
I do believe the Polar Biathlon group would have been tighter if it was first. By the time I was halfway into the group I could not feel my trigger finger due to the cold and pulled the trigger using my arm to pull my finger back instead of a nice finger pad push or squeeze. Also, the wind was picking up a bit as the temperature was dropping during the second group. All in all, things were getting a bit sloppy compared to the X-Act group. So much so as pointed out by another I targeted the X-Act POA while shooting the Polar Biathlon group. However, I saw enough of the Biathlon group to rank it a decent round. Originally, I had intended to shoot the three 1-inch bulls eye squares under each group for a quick accuracy showing but things got too cold too fast, and I didn't think I could focus and offer a credible attempt.
@22rimfireultra67 Yeah, that looked super cold, buddy!! 🥶 I shot in -28° last year, and it was not fun. Rounds were sticking in the chamber, and like you, my fingers were gone 🤣 It gets darn cold up here in the sticks. I have some Polar Biathlon, but my rifles don't like it much. Maybe it wasn't cold enough yet? I did put a compensator on my Bergara, and it seemed to bring them in quite a bit. Maybe I will try some in the same weather you just went into. I think it's coming here soon. It actually should have been here at the end of December. We are late this year, which scares me. Think we are in deep trouble for the end of January until the end of March first of April 😰
Well you’re a very brave and dedicated shooter. Interesting results between the two. I’m guessing the biathlon is a bit faster to make it group higher and slightly left, but the X-Act certainly pulled the best group. Thank you for your dedication.👍
Yes, the Polar Biathlon (1099 f/s) is a bit faster than the X-Act (1069 f/s). The X-Act group is actually tighter than I indicated. It was pointed out by jackjill that during the Polar group I shot a round into the X-Act group. This round was high and skewed the measurement. Re-measuring gives a reading of approximately 0.49". Good consistency.
Dang, Dude! 😶 Just watching that made me cold! 🥶 Good looking rifle and great shooting, considering the conditions. 👍🏼
It got cold during the Polar Biathlon. All I could think about was a blazing fire and something hot to drink. I wore 'skateboarders' mitten/gloves to unload and set up. Nice and warm. But switched to thumb and index finger 'open' gloves for shooting. That works with obvious limitations.
At 8:13 you shoot the wrong target.
So I did! Good catch! On re-checking, that would give X-Act a new measurement of 0.49" (roughly). Also, on counting X-Act shots, there were 34 fired in stead of the intended 30. I blame the cold! 🥶😉
Another Great Demo Thanks for sharing and sacrifice 😝 Great groups and answered my question Lapua shoots just fine in Cold Climate. On the polar was thinking name like that if it was somehow better in the cold maybe as far as a different lube or what not? Thanks again 👍🏻
The Polar Biathlon is slightly faster than X-Act. That plus maybe the burn rate makes it a better choice in the cold? They both shot pretty good today.
@ Interesting Thanks !
Do you ever think we as shooters are not the smartest creatures on earth? I would have been out today if the wind wasn't blowing 20mph.
It is telling what drives us to be sure! Frost bite in the winter and sun burn in the summer 🥶🥵.
Appreciate your videos. Quite. I tried shooting a couple days ago. Temps were somewhat colder: 6-10F. The effect on precision was huge. I couldnt tell if it was the scope deforming due to the cold, or the barrel, or the ammo - or maybe me! But I gave up after an hour or so because it was obvious that even after re-sighting m scope I wasnt going to do much good. Also using Lapua Polar ammo.
I didn't seem to be having any issues with the rig set up. But I was having trouble with the fingers. They reach a certain level of cold resulting in loss of sensation and fine motor use. 6-10*F can take a person down pretty quickly!
Nice! Thank you. Love my 52C, so glad I could find one at a gun show, priceless.
What barrel is on the Vudoo ?
Vudoo standard : Ace barrel
Very nice groups
Bullets are tumbling…
Not using a cheek riser really gets on peoples nerves. I've seen in the comments!😅
LOL! It wasn't that long ago it would have bothered me as well. After watching the Vudoo Single Shot target shooting and an F-Class John video, I gave it a try. Instant improved vibratory stability. Now it feels odd for me to have it on with this target rifle when shooting. I do replace it when putting the rifle back in the case.
@22rimfireultra67 i like it as a reminder, so I get on the scope the same way every time, with very little input. I found that using it as a pillow just magnifies my heartbeat a lot!
What reticle are you using on the Knightforce scope ?
.125 MOA NP-2DD reticle with 'floating center dot'. A beautiful target reticle!
Excellent !! I just ordered my V22s. Your videos helped inspire my decision making. That is the exact scope and reticle I chose. Thank you for filming all these tests.
That rifle is a laser! This video shows why I like the Std+ ammo!
It's a good shooter for sure!
Neat that you have a left handed ejection to load and unload easily
Needs different ammo
Yes, that would have been nice to run some precision ammunition through. This Rem 541 has long ago been traded.
Great video, subbed and liked. Going to try it on my bergara bmr.
Nice video. Thanks for sharing.
Excellent experiment. I've shot four of the five cartridges in my rifles, the exception being X-Act. Hands down the best has been Center-X. Interestingly, in warm-hot weather, I was nailing maximum point scores with Center-X. Now that colder weather has arrived, I've managed to drop one or two points in each of the last three matches. I think it prefers the warmer weather.
Yes, it's all very interesting. The .22LR ammunition that ultimately shows the best performance with a specific rifle is not price determined, but the multitude of variables that go into materials and manufacturing and the dynamics of operation. Then either the barrel likes it a lot or only a little.
Nice!
We live and learn don't we. Thanks for showing me..
Lifelong learning!
Another awesome video! I'd love to see you shooting an Anschutz 1710 DHB. Some say that they're not as accurate as Anschutz single shot benchrest rifles because they have sloppy chambers for feeding out of a magazine, and then others say that the 1710's will keep up with single shots. If anyone can prove or disprove this theory it'll be you.
Great idea for a comparison video! 54 action single shot vs 54 action magazine fed. Will watch the weather and look for a day. Cheers!
@@22rimfireultra67 Awesome, I'm really looking forward to it.
You get what you pay for. Lapua gave you the best results . The CTR-X and least expensive of the Lapua 22lr Rifle Ammo.
Thanks for the statistically valid sample size! It's interesting to note the first 3 or 5 shots at every target and how the final assessment varied from what we saw at that 3-5 shot group. So much of what we think we know is mistaken due to sampling error, small sample size.
Great video 👍🎯
Once this is set will it work with any ammo. Or do you need to retune with different ammo
First my disclaimer: I do not use a tuner. I just place one every now and then for interest. I do shoot with people who use tuners faithfully, and this is what they tell me: Must be 'tuned' for each lot of ammunition. Even if same brand, must be re-tuned if new lt.
Seems as if the CenterX was the most consistent!🤔
Agreed!
Great shooting Maestro! I wonder what is your technique for cleaning your barrels and what do you think about using aggressive copper solvents . Thank you and enjoy your shooting.
I do not use copper coated bullets, so do not use copper solvents. I keep my barrel maintenance pretty simple. After 200 or so rounds I will use a .22 size bore mop or .22 size bore tip sponge, saturated with C4, attached to a .22 size pistol cleaning rod, pushed just into the chamber only from the breech end, and let soak for 5-15 minutes. After this I will use a dry 1" round 'Pro=Shot Products' cotton patch on a 'PatchWorm', fed breech end, and pull through completely exiting muzzle. I will repeat the cotton patches until dry. After this I pull a lightly oiled patch through one time. Before the next outing, I'll pull a patch through to remove most of the oil. As long as I continue with same manufacturer ammunition, with the same lubrication and lead composition I do not use anything other than Bore tech C4. I rarely push a rod through anymore. If I only shoot up to 100 rounds for an outing, I will omit the mop or bore tip sponge and start with a soaked 1" round cotton patch followed be additional dry patches until no further liquid absorbed. On checking with a bore scope, there is rarely (almost never) a carbon ring left requiring a more aggressive approach. All of this is with the school-of- thought that the barrel 'seasoned' properly with single source ammunition yields optimal performance. Anyhow, at this point in time, that is what I do.
@22rimfireultra67 thank you for your reply! Yes I follow pretty much the same process with the difference of using a dwey rod ( nylon coated) and I only use mineral spirit even on my rifles that shoot copper coated bullets. I'm against copper stripping as I don't believe that copper keeps building up. I actually think that it stabilise and mantein accuracy. I personally call it copper plating.
Very nice, which race track are you near
Not a racetrack. Range is in the flight path of an airport.
Very very cool Ultra!! 😎 Always love seeing these tests! Nice shooting 👍
CenterX for the win. I hope the Great Turkey brought you multiple cases of that lot! Thanks for all of your efforts.
I may have missed this information, but just to confirm, the target distance is 100yd, right?
50 yards.
That’s by far the most valid test of the precision/consistency of high quality 22LR ammunition I’ve ever seen: skilled shooter, top tier rifle, no environmental excuses, and truly meaningful group sizes. There can still be unavoidable variables that would affect this and other tests, but although others probably have, I’ve never seen anyone else go to the trouble and expense of conducting anything similar. Thank you. And to add, I appreciated how clearly you made all the test conditions and results. I checked another channel's video just now and couldn't determine what rifle was used and although pictures of targets were shown they didn't identify which ammunition had been used. Even if the information is buried in the narration it's good to be able to go back and review results without having to listen to an entire presentation.
Nice comments, thanks. Larger number groups bring home the actual predictor of shot-to-shot consistency. And consistency leads to more 'x's'.
Wow! Thank you very much for doing that. Not the results I was expecting 😮. You could definitely hear the SK Rifle Match flyer was hot compared to the rest. Also interesting to hear the model planes in the background. You don’t have a Big Sandy Machine Gun shoot there like the Yanks do by chance 😅
👍👍
Hi very entertaining as usual , in your opinion which ammunition shoots best in a 54 match Anschutz? Thanks
I can't say which ammo your Anschutz would shoot best. You would have to try different brands and see which it prefers. Even then, different lots of the same brand might perform differently from each other. A good source would be the Anschutz forum at Rimfire Central, FWIW, Anschutz North America tests and sells RWS ammunition.
You got to lot-test and see.. there is no shortcut to this. Each rifle is unique. I know that lots of people prefer tenex in their annies
Thank you for another Great demo on These Ammo’s 👍🏻👍🏻 And an incredible Rifle set up 🤯 22Ulta
Great video. Thanks. I have some 30 shot groups with SK Rifle Match and Midas+ on my channel that you may find interesting. Enjoyed seeing someone else shoot a higher sample size. 5 shot groups can be deceiving.
Thanks! Will look up your channel.
