  • This CZ 457 started out as a beautiful 457 Varmint. It shot well and felt super in hand. A decision was made to modify it with a MTR stock, a Lilja 26" match barrel configured for .043" headspace, changing to a 3 ounce JARD trigger, and adding a front bag adapter purpose made for Lithgow LA 101 found on ebay.AU that fits perfectly.
Today was the rebuilt rifles first time at the range.
Groups were shot after 10 sighting in rounds. The scope was a 24X Weaver with thick cross hairs. Not ideal but it's what it was mounted with.
After the groups a 25 bull target was challenged. That did not go as well as hoped. It was a bit confusing, until picking up rifle at end of session and scope 'slid' on the rail. It was not torqued down properly and most likely shifted during the shoot?
The group results were in the '3's with one outstanding group at 0.18". I feel this build is capable of consistent low '3's and occasional high '2's once barrel fouled in and favored ammunition determined.
The 26" barrel is an exciting feature suited for bench rest shooting. The Lilja offers premium barrel, shimmed head space and Match chamber. This barrel had head space shimmed to .043" with the intent to shoot SK and Lapua. The good CZ trigger was exchanged for the CZ 457 JARD with a pull weight of 3 ounces. A fantastic crisp trigger. The 3 inch wide front bag adapter offers extreme stability on a 3" front rest bag.
My initial opinion on the aesthetics of the CZ MTR stock when first released were not complimentary to any degree. As time went on, and after seeing and handling one I quickly became a fan. So much in fact that it was the impetus for this build. I now love everything about the MTR stock. The designers at CZ did a phenomenal job on the form/function equation.
Acknowledgment to 'Pursuit of Accuracy' and 'Eagle Eye Shooting' channels for their outstanding CZ 457 content and inspiration !

I've got one upgrade I know of for my Rem.597 and that's the barrel. I've found one company, called "Jarvis" never seen one review. Scared to purchase it!😮 Still, I think I will. Who knows, it may be the greatest thing going!😅
Cool to see the upgrades your rifle has gone through!❤❤❤

Nothing wrong with the standard CZ Varmint configuration and I love its classic lines compared to the obese looking MTR. I think both configurations need more testing to see which one really comes out ahead accuracy wise. Great video as usual 👍

The Standard CZ Varmint is a very beautiful rifle indeed! The change over was specifically geared toward bench rest shooting. Thus, the MTR design. I too found the MTR 'unsightly' when first seen, but have grown to find it very appealing, prompting me to find the used stock and follow thru with the build.
And yes, the Standard Varmint was 22LR accurate unadulterated, but I think the 'bench' style MTR with the addition of a much lighter trigger and precision match barrel will ultimately shine brighter.
And, for better or worse, the Standard Varmint is no more.
      Cheers!

Very nice. I think you can definitely get some better results with it after some more testing

Yeah, I think the Varmint is way nicer than the ugly MTR and it averaged a better overall group size than the Lilja Barrelled MTR for way less of a price. It's like taking jam out of a jar and putting sheet in.

The varmint is beautiful and well built, agree!
I'm hoping this MTR build begins to perform with a little more time and sorting out 🙃

Any thoughts on pillars or bedding it at this point? I know it's a debated issue with the lilja barrel about break in. Some show noticeable improvement right away (which I kinda would expect) and some have talked about the difference after "break in". Whether people believe in it or not I know most of the testing centers won't even accept a rifle barrel that has under 500 rds reason being it eliminates variable of change later. A couple big barrel makers say there is no need to break a barrel in but...but you may see improvements after XXX number of rounds and that number differs. On my custom builds I burned 1000 rds of CCi SV & SK Magazine before I started using Lapua. It's been debated on the forums some have done similar some haven't but the group who did seems to report less flyers overall. Not sure how this can be quantified or explained.

Yes, I have thought about bedding but need to get some extended time at the range to understand its potential first.
I side with the camp who feel barrel 'fouling' can make a difference in accuracy. The theory is lead and lubrication running through the entire barrel (hence 750 -1000 rounds) eliminates at least some microscopic 'drag' on the soft lead 22LR bullet as it races to the muzzle end. I like to think of it as Teflon coating on a frying pan.

Nice little project to keep you busy while waiting for the vudoo v22s to come back with a tuner ?!! Always looking forward to your videos !!

V22s still being shot sans tuner. I haven't utilized to its potential yet. Once satisfied with its (and mine) abilities without a tuner, will follow the tuner road and see what additional can be squeaked out of the beauty. 😉

Did you bed the action? What torque on the action screws?

    • @22rimfireultra67
      @22rimfireultra67  2 месяца назад +2

No I have not bedded the action. It is a consideration for the future.
Action screws are torqued at 20 inch pounds. I have not tested this yet, but with wood stock and some sort of 'man made' pillars I did not want to over torque. Most of my wood stock rifles that were tested were most accurate at 20 inch pounds, hence picking that setting.

@@22rimfireultra67 My MTR shoots best at 20 inch pounds aswell. factory barrel using SK rifle match and standard plus ammo will shoot sub moa *.2-.3 * all day long @ 50 yards. i'm going to do a chassis build with a Lilja i think...
