A model railway set in Denmark in the mid-1950s
Building the Layout - Testing Train Controller - Vlog ep 002
I have been running a small test set-up with a view to revisit my old TrainController system before I really start to (re)build the layout. The aim has been to test various rolling stock, computer hardware and software as well as refresh the entire programming side of a computer-controlled model railway. And then, of course, to finally "play" a bit with trains again. As you can see, I am still running the 10 years+ old TrainController 5.9, aka Rocomotion, which has since been overtaken by newer versions. Nevertheless, the old program still works so I am going to stick with that at least for the time being. I owe a big shout out to Jernbanen.dk for letting me use their pictures of Danish r...

Building the Layout - It's all about the base - Vlog ep 001
Просмотров 3,2 тыс.Месяц назад
This is the beginning of a journey: it is time to begin building the layout - again! I actually started years ago and carried on for some time until the family and I went abroad for my work. Now I am back in the basement of our old house and I can start building again, not exactly were I left off, but at least the open framework base was still there. In this video I clean up the train room, reh...
Making a Model Snowman Scene
Просмотров 390Месяц назад
Winter has officially started in my 1/87 model version of Denmark in the 1950s and that obviously calls for a snowman. Traditions may vary from place to place and over time, but the archetypical 1950s Danish snowman would have a tall black hat (not common to have laying around these days). A snowman would also have eyes and buttons made from pieces of coal (also a scarcity today) and a broom or...
NSB Class L from Exact-Train - Unboxing and Weathering

As in Denmark and the rest of Europe, the German occupation left a diversity of railway rolling stock in Norway in 1945. In general the Norwegians were much quite prepared to simply take over and repurpose the German left-overs probably aided by the fact that the occupation had been much harsher here than in Denmark. One such abandoned wagon was L 37424 an ex-DR Klagenfurt. Furthermore, this pa...
Pastry Party at City Square
Просмотров 4592 месяца назад
Danish is synonymous with pastry in many parts of the English speaking world, however in Denmark pastry is known as "wienerbrød" with reference to the Austrian capital. Nevertheless, pastry/"wienerbrød" - especially together with coffee - was immensely popular in Denmark in the 1950s which is the era I am modelling. So it felt natural to extend the free coffee-tasting event at city square with ...
Recycled Diorama from an old Layout

The most popular video to date on this channel has been the Winter Landscape. Unfortunately, I had to dismantle the layout due to the family moving house. Instead of throwing it all out I cut the baseboard up in smaller movable pieces and used them as a basis for a small diorama as well as baseboards for background trees. DSB Class CO (XI) from Dekas - Unboxing, Passengers, Light and Weathering

DSB class CO (XI) coaches were a product of the Danish state railways rejuvenation programme from the mid-1930s to the late-1950s. The programme saw a number of older coaches from around WW I rebuild into more modern rolling stock. Especially in the early years the rejuvenation program saw a lot of experimentation and this particular coach was one of only four revamped in this particular way. T...
Platform Tractor from Epokemodeller - Assembling, Painting, Weathering

All major passenger stations and larger goods depots had these very typical Danish platform tractors in "my" era in the mid-1950s. Locally produced by "Hviids Maskinfabrik" in Hillerød north of Copenhagen the first models dated back to 1937. The platform tractors were of a homegrown design, equipped with 4 cyl. Ford engines and rather powerful for their time. They were often seen hauling one or...
NS class S-CHV "Fyffes" Interfrigo from Artitec - Weathering

Interfrigo was founded in 1949 and specialised in refrigerated rail transport of high volume goods. Not least the transportation of bananas between the port of Rotterdam to different European markets was rather big business and Fyffes of course, had been one of the biggest banana import companies since the turn of the century. In the beginning the principal markets were Germany and Switzerland....

H0e Narrow Gauge Wagons from Roco - Making Them Look Like Danish Sugar Beets Wagons
Просмотров 6227 месяцев назад
Throughout the years sugar beets have been a very important commodity for the railways in Denmark, That goes for both the State Railways (DSB), local private railway companies, as well as narrow gauge lines run directly by the sugar factories. The models are from Roco and are not exact reproductions of Danish beets wagons, however maybe they are close enough. Please visit my blog for more detai...
Creating a model scene - Coffee Tasting
Просмотров 3577 месяцев назад
Coffee is an integrated part of daily life for most Danes and it was like that in the mid-1950s as well, the era I am modelling. At that time coffee, however, was relatively expensive and most Danes would use surrogats to stretch the coffee beans a little further. One of the leading surrogat companies was "Rich's" and one of their VW-vans has pulled up at the city square together with similar v...
DSB Class PFB-PFR from Dekas - Peat Wagons - Unboxing and Weathering

During both world wars, Denmark had to rely heavily on domestic energy sources such as lignite (a.k.a. “brown coal”) and peat. When war broke out in Europe in 1939 the Danish railways, both the State Railways (DSB) and local lines, were immediately mobilised as the backbone of an intricate distribution system transporting lignite and peat from the countryside to the cities. Hi, great and inspiring video. Thank you! Which Viessmann lightstrips are you using? Did you wire it for DC? Would these lightstrips also work for DCC ? Thank you! Erik
Hi Erik! The light strip is a Viessmann 5050 Waggon-Innenbeleuchtung, Warmweiss. I run DCC but the strip will also work for DC and even AC if I understand the instructions correctly.
@@SundborgModelRailway Thank you!
Altid interessant at se hvad du har gang i! Jeg har altid nydt at følge med på bloggen så selvfølgelig bliver der også fulgt med på dette projekt!
Det lyder godt! Næste Vlog kommer ved månedens slutning :-D
WOW 👀👀👀 Thanks
Thank you! Hope you will enjoy the next Vlog later this month as well :-D
Yeah I’ll follow this ☝️

Hi I've subscribed to your channel, looking forward to seeing more videos. What a fantastic start. Colin
Thank you Colin, welcome aboard!
Det bliver spændende at følge. Lige som hidtil.
Håber du vil hænge på :-D
From a Danish Fan - Thank you for being allowed to follow the creation of the inspiring structure of your layout from the start. Over a longer period, I have reflected on why there were only particularly inspiring videos about wagons, etc. from your channel. Now I know Can only recommend a look at @BBM1930s which provides a fantastic and convincing impression of the construction of a layout with a depicting an imaginary journey from Berlin Anhalter Bahnhof via Basel to Milan in the thirties... the B.B.M.1930s.
Excellent advice. Thank you and looking forward to more videos!
Thanks. Hope you'll stick around for the next episodes.

@SundborgModelRailway I sure will, wish you success with building it and all the best for 2025!
You are certainly an artist, I look forward to seeing how your layout progresses! Thanks for sharing your passion and work.
Thank you for your kind words of support. Hope you will stay tuned and watch the layout grow.
I saw a layout and I want to paint it black ...
Ha! Yes, I wanted to use the old Rolling Stones hit in my video, but was affraid You Tube would punish me for violating copy rights.
very exiting to see how you proceed in the future videos. Led lights are a good choice. Some people choose to use a diffuser channel for their led light to get a more even light. that way avoiding having the lights mirrored as white spots in the tracks. But the result you got there looks very good. One thing worries me though and that is how wide the framework is. where you are standing , at 8.44, you seems to be able to reach the wall , but there you are inside the outher limits of the framework. You could add a hatch or two to solve any problems. Great fun ! thanks for the video ! and a happy new year too !
Thank you for your support! I have never thought about white spots on the tracks as an issue but it is a very good point - I will look into diffuser channels at some point. Thanks for the tip! And yes, the layout is pretty wide ("Euro-Style") and access to all parts will have to be considered when building the tracks and the landscape. There will be both manholes for access from underneath and "safe spots" that can support weight from above. The upside will hopefully be a layout with considerable depth which I hope will look convincing once the landscape starts taking shape. Happy new year to you too!
Great start. I'm about to start my own railway so I'll be watching this all the way. Bob
Thank you, Bob. It is great when model railway enthusiasts can inspire each other. I watch a lot of layout building RUclips-videos myself and you can always get new ideas.
@@SundborgModelRailway Thanks for your reply. Yes, there are a great many very good videos to learn from but I expect your will be more interactive and "live" for me because I am following it as it happens, rather than seeing the history of something that was built some time ago. Thanks again. Bob
Having enjoyed many of your videos detailing rolling stock and creating dioramas I’m greatly looking forward to seeing your layout develop. It seems very wide but you’ve clearly already put a lot of thought into its design. I’m sure the end result will be spectacular.
Thank you for your interest! I hope you will stay tuned and watch the layout grow. Nice to see properly planned out and constructed framework. Very impressed with what you've achieved so far 👍
Thank you for your encouragement. I hope you will stay tuned and follow the layout grow.
@SundborgModelRailway I've subscribed and rung the bell so I don't miss any updates
Great start. The solid base is really important, as is good lighting... so you are already well progressed. Can you join all your dioramas up to give a wider view? Happy modelling.
Thank you! I don't know if I can use the dioramas as part of the layout, I think I will rather make something new - that's my favorite part of the hobby :-) Happy modelling to you too!
@SundborgModelRailway I was meaning more initially, placed out together with the new lighting so we see your great handywork before the layout starts to take shape. 👍 Have fun
This is awesome! I’ve been following your content for awhile and it’s nice to see it coming together
Thank you! Hope you will stay tuned to the channel and watch the layout grow :-)
A huge layout. Im planning my lauout and this give.me some good ideas👍 My room is much smaller but my layout will be in N scale. I like the idea of shelfs and drawers and a specific place for the computer. I have only 3 locomotives and a dussin cars and a range play diorama thats all I have🙂 First step will be planning the layout and deside what DCC system and program. Then i start buying rails, points etc. My starting budget about 3000 euro.
Glad you could find some inspiration in the storage and computer space. N scale of course takes up much less space than h0 and I always envy the very long trains N-scalers can run. It sounds as if you have a very respectable budget so best of luck with your layout!!
@@SundborgModelRailway Budget is never enought. Im a carguy and tripple time and budget is the rule for my car hobby. So I assume its the same with model railroads..

Reichsbahn rolling stock ended up everywhere to the point strings of DR domed curved roof box cars are seen in Bulgarian train yards till this day.

Great video! One question: what carriages did you connect to the locomotive? Are they Trix or another manufacturer, and can you tell me the exact model number - I would like to try to find them online
That is a great question. The class E would pull almost anything from 1935-1970 - both passenger and freight trains. If you purchase models of Danish rolling stock from Trix or indeed Heljan, Dekas, Brawa, Tillig marked era III you almost cannot go wrong. Also in freight trains you would see quite a few foreign goods wagons so if German, Swedish, Dutch, French or Italian freight cars are easier to find where you live, you can let the class E haul them as well. If you take a look at my blog sundborg.wordpress.com/ you will find a lot of rolling stock described there. Although the text is in Danish the pictures can give you a good idea of what products to purchase. Since I am only modelling the mid-1950s all you see on my blog will be suitable companions for the class E. Please feel free to write again later and let me know if you have found anything good :-)
@@SundborgModelRailway Thank you for the information - you have a very interesting blog, and indeed I am now trying to get my hands on the Dekas DSB CO 2651-54 set you describe there, or 2-3 cars from the DSB CM (VII) group. Should be a nice match for the Litra E 991 😉

It is 1:87 h0-scale. If you can't tell the scale it is usually a good sign :-)
mice video ! i really like your table cloth made out of paper, i have used tin foil when making clothes and laundry, tin foil is easier to bend and make nice wrinkles, especially on laundry hanging on a clothesline. Painted with an airbrush. anyway thanks for another great video !
