  • During both world wars, Denmark had to rely heavily on domestic energy sources such as lignite (a.k.a. “brown coal”) and peat. When war broke out in Europe in 1939 the Danish railways, both the State Railways (DSB) and local lines, were immediately mobilised as the backbone of an intricate distribution system transporting lignite and peat from the countryside to the cities. A great number of open wagons were equipped with “peat hedges”, which expanded the loading capacity of the wagons considerably. The demand for peat continued during the first years after the war, but then began to dwindle as international trade with coal and oil products resumed. The peat hedges were mostly gone by the mid-1950s, which is the era I am modelling, but somebody seems to have forgotten these two old class PF-wagons at a distant siding track. The models are from Danish manufacturer Dekas and their photo etched peat hedges are something never before seen in a Danish modelling context. I have given the wagons quite a heavy layer of weathering since the two of them have probably soldiered on since the early war years without much care. Please visit my blog www.sundborg.wordpress.com (mostly in Danish) for more on my plans for a Danish model railway layout.

    Delicate little wagons

The wagons where already 50 years+ at the time where my layout is set, so they both look and are old fashioned. But the models are very nice and not as delicate as they appear :-)

    Halløj
    Flot patiniering.
