I used to work as a repairman in a large service center, I remember that very large CRT televisions rarely arrived in the lab, maybe 5 a year, they were expensive and few people could afford them, their brand was mainly Grundig but there were also some Philips and I think there were also some large Toshiba ones. These sets contained CRTs from Mitsubishi or Toshiba but the largest tubes were Mitsubishi. They were too large televisions that I could not put on the table, so I opened them, took out their electronics, which were the same as a normal television, and repaired them on the table. Grundigs always had a lot of soldering to do and I redid it with a lot of tin, and often Grundigs had something defective on the horizontal deflection or on the high voltage, in extreme cases the printed circuit board near the horizontal deflection was carbonized, I had to file away the carbon using a file and in the end I had a big hole on the printed circuit board and then I had to replace the original connections with copper wires. The big Grundigs had a designation M95..., M100... or something similar, they had a motherboard and on this were inserted various cards/modules. In the last years of existence of Grundig they also produced very large models with 16:9 cathode ray tubes, of these televisions I have repaired only a few, I don't remember what brand of tube they had, however if it wasn't Mitsubishi it was Toshiba.

You're quest really looks like you are running a stray cat shelter. You must have cleaned tons of gunk from all those neglected pieces of tech. I recently came in a farm where the owner had collected TV's in an open unheated shed. I drove away as fast as possible. It was a nightmare in there with bird poo, dust, rust and stink.

I can understand these ugly beasts are trashed. Even as CRT lover it is hard to feel some love for these models myself. For me 24" is the absolute max, I've one 1984 Philips 29" because it is the GOAT, and one 32" because it won't leave (85kg), all others are smaller. These flat Sony's are even heavier than the curved ones, have loathable case designs, more geometry issues and there are many budget late flat models that don't have all the basics like S-video, proper stereo or full geometry/color controls. That last bit seems ok here.

Hey Rob great vid! I recently picked up one of these bad boys and your video has been very informative and helpful. I just have a few questions; 1. What is the serial of the remote you are using? I picked mine up without a remote and so I can't access the service menu. I've heard that trinitron remotes can be universal depending on the model and I was thinking otherwise i might pick up a RM-W104 or RM-857 and see if that works. 2. Does the tv have cross hatch built in? Or are you using a test dvd? If it is the former, how do you access it? Thanks for any help you can give. Keep up the good work!

Hi Rob! Really considering getting a 7000 and I've seen you test it here with a Saturn lightgun game. What I'd love to know is if it'll work with a Dreamcast lightgun as well. That may sound like a dumb question because there might not be any difference but I'm new to the whole B&O scene and I've read quite a few times that people have problems specifically with lightguns on their B&O MXs because of the second screen. And seeing as I'd mainly get a CRT for House of the Dead 2 on the Dreamcast, I wouldn't want to haul home the wrong TV XD I'd be thankful for any tips. Thanks!

Hello, I have a Thomson 14MK135 TV. I bought it new from a person. In its original box, with documents. I bought it for retro gaming, and decided to set up the geometry, went to the service menu according to the instructions from the espec website. At first, when I had a MiSTer FPGA connected to the TV, I could not get into the service menu, but as soon as I turned it off, I immediately managed to enter .. and while in the service menu, I launched the MiSTer.. I managed to set up the geometry almost to perfection. After setting up, I restarted the TV using the button on the remote control, everything as in the instructions, the changes were saved .. but after the service menu, all the settings in the normal menu were lost .. the language was reset to English, the brightness and contrast settings were lost .. and the main problem that I can not get rid of is that every time I turn on the TV, the settings menu appears .. namely, on the language selection item. What could this be connected with? Maybe the fact that I forcibly launched the console in NTSC while in the service menu? Perhaps its service menu can only work in PAL. And perhaps the problem is in the firmware.

When I worked as a Macintosh tech in Sydney Australia a digital finished art studio had one that was used for digital retouching and checking content for broadcast at 720 and 1080.
