The Korg Minilogue XD is perfect for sound design
The minilogue XD is way too limited for me. There are good things about it, namely the pricepoint. But I absolutely hate that it only has an AD envelope for the filter and that it only has 1 LFO which can only be used to modulate 1 destination and there are only 3 destinations to choose from, cutoff, pitch and shape. The filter is also very basic, only 1 2-pole 12db lowpass filter and not a drive knob but rather a drive switch which can select between 3 drive amounts. That seems silly, I doubt it's even a moneysaver for Korg to implement it like that. 4 note polyphony is also very limiting, but at this pricepoint I think it is not something to complain about. It has 3 oscillators per voice though, which is excellent, the 3rd oscillator being digital and capable of wavetables, which is also great. If you are a developer, like me, then it is also possible to develop your own wavetables and even your own effects for this thing, which is why it is definately a keeper for me, although I have a hard time finding the time to do so next to my day job and my other hobby synth projects.
wen im sat at home ,with my dog ,,we gt banggers going ,,i swear my window is open. ,,,sometimes,, yet. the less i know about a machine the more a ppreciated i am for it , ,,tho i only sold one wich was a beghringer ,,, dont ana;iize music. just do it ,,......init. ,, thease are like scientific calculators. ,,,as long as u got basic math. ,, then the rest is a bonus
if mc 101 could do a simple live rec ...it would be be amazing because i can deal with that ,, but this has so many extr things. i dont think ill ever get to use the whole scope ,,because i still like my other machines n guitar ,,, very confusing switching from different manufac ,,, to the other
is it clean or colors sounds?

@@alexmckenzie42 yes I love to breathe them in
could i combine it with digitone 2 and use the pads also as midi controlling for the digitone?
Yes. Digitone can control/be controlled with anything that sends/receives MIDI
I really like your setup and also your thoughts behind it! :) I've got a quiet similar setup. I've got the Blackbox, Bluebox, Digitakt MK I, Syntakt, Octatrack, Revolo, Launch Control XL, SH-01A. In my case, I'm using the Bluebox as my main mixer and the Novation Launch Control is connected via USB so I can control the 6 channels and some send-return action with this MIDI Controller. The Digitakt is basically for the whole drums and the Syntakt is there for some backup drums a mainly for the melodic stuff. :) The SH-01A is for live "playing". I've got a lot of Sequenzes in the Octatrack so I can get some nice grooves out of it with some effects from the Octatrack on top of it. :) In the Blackbox I've got some longer samples from my studio sessions or some melodic parts from my ASM Hydrasynth - wich I want to take with me in the live situation but it's to big to carry it easily around^^
oh, so it turns out i have to hold down record + play in order to record what i play. all good cheers
cool video but when i play a riff, press record on Digitakt nothing happens.. its not recording any notes i play
Can you change the root note all together? Every demo is playing with C as the the root note. I'd like to see if it can play something like an F# minor scale and chords.
Yep! I mentioned that option is in the “grid” setup page
Is Synth running through the Boum in this video? Sounds warmer than I’ve heard in other vids.
@@luciousfl0w I’ve got the synth going into the 404 and that runs into the Boum. I’m just using it for a tiny bit of compression here though! I tend to gravitate toward warmer/hazier synth patches. This does both clean & lofi very well!
Just picked up Digitone 2 and it’s really the sound designers dream.. put into the new Teenage Engineering thing and that would be the best synth/workstation evaaaa!!
Yeah that does sound like a killller dream combo!
I need to figure out how to create my own ‘chord packs’ - anyone know how to do it?
@@choogaface-musicproduction2416 I have not yet ventured into this (only so much time, and I focused more on trying to make some tunes with it as quickly as I could!). Have you checked out the manual?
You can do it as a beta feature in version 1.01 - I haven’t looked into that yet though as mine only arrived today
Love this overview, this seems like a really good synth for the price. Especially compared to something like the MiniFreak (which I love), this is cheaper and in some ways more powerful and interesting as someone who likes playing with pads. Really lovely jams in this video too, pairing with the SP404 was genius
@@DylanParisMusic thanks Dylan! Yeah it’s a really good time, the pad workflow is fun (speaking from someone who isn’t worth potatoes @ playing keys)
I just love the sound's you have got going there. I've heard a lot of criticism at the limitations of the device, but this is a brill example of what you can do with it. Their price point being much lower than a play+ and tracker+ have the community thinking there will be a synth+ at a higher price at some point. I don't want to be one who shares that thought though.
@@garethbull5303 thank you! I personally think it’s a pretty fair price for what it is
I got mine today. I’m not technical at all with more of a dj background. Straight out of the box I was jamming and having loads of fun within a couple of minutes. It really was SO. MUCH. FUN!! And isn’t what so much of this is meant to be about? Having accessible fun, jamming and making music. Well done Polyend!! And doing it all for a super reasonable price. I don’t care is there’s a + version coming - I’ll probably happily buy that one as well 😂
@@bondi5000 that seems to be Polyend’s whole thing - have fun as quick as possible with the ability to dive much deeper if you’re into that!
Follower allows you to program a pattern in one section, and that section will play automatically and follow the scale that you play in another section.
This sounds fantastic wowwww
@@Ancaja123 thanks!
nice video, does the chord feature and chord pack features transmit all of that midi to the outputs?
Nope
Interesting layout but how do you know what notes or chords you are actually playing?
The manual is the most helpful resource to explain that! I have the product page linked in the description. But to start, the brighter “white” pads are the root notes of the scale you set each synth to
@@SlowHasteappreciate that clarification. I'm guessing adding a midi keyboard would eliminate the ability to play 3 engines simultaneously on tne midi keyboard?
@@wholeheartedsongs I truthfully haven’t played around with MIDI yet - but I do believe the 3 engines could be simultaneously sequenced with something like a keystep
I've been saying for a decade imagine how good elektron products would be if they had a screen like this. So much bettter!
@@MadelnMachines I do love this screen!
They desperately need to upgrade the screen considering the issues they've had recently 🤕
It really does sound great and the price is right. I just don't understand 8 notes of polyphony. It's rather annoying how so many modern synths just cripple themselves with embarrassingly low poly count. In the 80s and 90s we have 16 part multitimbral digital synths with 64-128 not polyphony. Now we get 8 voices if we are lucky. The Blofeld and Virus were the last major synths to have multiple instances and large voice counts. Make it make sense.
@@RobotSnake more voices would def be a big plus!
I agree. I would buy if it at least had 16.
I'd guess it's a cost saving measure and a preference on Polyend's part to avoid allowing the user to surpass the DSP headroom of the processor. The Roland Sh4d has the opposite problem where they advertised 60 note polyphony but they bug out or crash if people try to play more than 8-9 notes at a time.
The DSP is audibly more complex than 90s synths, which got to the polyphony they did because they relied on really good PCM samples to carry the sounds. Sorry to say it but it sounds better than the virus too (and the novation peak). Sure you could stick a beefier processor in there, but no one else is doing it
@ I'm not confused about the process but with everyone dumping Raspberry pi's into hardware it's not like the processors are that expensive and you can chain as many as you like.
Once I buy this, I will be happy for a long time
I keep saying that....
@@brainbox9219 haha, I wish you the best!!
Can your melody be sequenced within the unit itself ?
@@vinylselektaz6475 yes, there is a simple sequencer built into the sequence/arp menu!
This looks truly rad. I love the setup with the 404 too. You’re right, these two machines could make for endless fun.
@@BounceChord yeah, it’s a blast once you’ve got a few scenes set up & start looping!
I'm a huge fan of the form factor detaching itself from the keyboard style layout. This seems endlessly inspiring for this reason alone! Polyend, ya got my attention
@@Two-Eyed_Boy oh yeah, it’s a fun approach & especially welcome for non-key-centric players/programmers like myself!
Very clear and informative video! I did not realize how important compression was until I saw this. When filtering the sidechaining signal, do You still send its dry signal to the mixer instead of the filtered down one? Or both? Thanks a lot!
@@electronic2423 thanks for watching! You would just send the normal unfiltered signal to the mixer. The filtering only occurs in the context of what the compressor “listens” to before engaging the compressor. It doesn’t filter the audio of the output (and the input to the side chain is not routed to the output at all). I hope that helps!
Got one big thing wrong... The Digitakt also has an 8 voice synth...which is now 16 voices in the Digitakt 2... It still makes more sense to get the Digitakt 2 because it covers most of the Digitone 2 capabilities and so much more... 💥
Right, technically true considering the playback of single cycle waveforms!
Thank you so much for actually demonstrating both the granular and microsound aspects of this pedal. This is truly important because every other video I've seen just makes the same dense 'ambient' sounds and doesn't actually showcase the granular side of things. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
You’re very welcome!!

@@Honestjon1966 thanks! Tbh, the same exact things hold true, and I’m still using it for the same functions :)

@@lextron-audio no, it’s just modeled after analog-style filters which is less common on FM synths

Great video thanks!
Welcome, and, thanks for sharing! Curious how it matches up to (and/or differences) the OTO Boum, or, Elektron Analog Heat.
@@LuisTorres-qz5kr Hi! I’ve never used a Heat, so I can’t comment on that. But I have a Boum, and they’re very different - the Boum is more of a color/saturation box with an added single compression control - it’s a great compressor, but the Press gives you much more fine control over your comp settings. I love both! It just depends on what you’re looking for.
@@SlowHaste GREAT, thank you for the details, much appreciated! Onto my BUY list.
It sounds really punchy
@@NatLifeSounds yeah it certainly does!
Is the sidechain signal bypassed by the compressor?

My first impression of this compressor is "friendly". It seems like a great piece of gear to live on the desktop , especially with the mix and sidechain options.
@@Two-Eyed_Boy yeah that’s a great word for it. It’s everything you need & nothing you don’t!
I am trying to get this same combo setup. I've got the midi cables setup, the midi tracks (9-12) on DT are setup numbered 1-4, Auto channel on DT and DN is 10, keystep is setup and working fine with the DT, but the problem I am having is keystep cannot play the DN. On the key step, pressing Shift+key#9,10,11,12 doesn't select tracks on DN, but on the keystep, the Shift+keys#1-8 work fine to play tracks on the DT. Got any ideas how to get keystep to play the DN? It should work. I had it working in the past. It's weird.
So good. Reminds me of early Baths in the best way.
