can’t agree more! still stands out and love mine
Really love the quality of your drums - they blend so well with the sample. Any tips would be great on this!
Thanks! Hm it’s a lot of trial and error, finding the “right” samples, messing with filter settings, and also the master compressor on track 8! Sometime I’d like to do a more in depth video about programming percussion from scratch
same here by messing with filters, LFOs and EQ these really made my drum samples come alive as well as some delay/reverb@@SlowHaste
@@GuitarsAndSynths yep! It’s all about experimentation until it clicks
This is a great video, which actually clearly lays out how you put together the track. I'm looking to try a groovebox that I can get up and running on, but is also deep enough to give it longevity. But was intimidated by the OT's reputed learning curve. There's a lot of YT demos out there with very "busy" tracks, so I've no idea how the OT is being used on those. But, this video makes it a lot clearer, that I could start using the OT as a groovebox, and learn deeper functions as I go.
Thanks for watching, I'm glad it was useful :)
Really digging your aesthetic and for that reason it's really tempting to just grab one. Can totally relate to the specificity of the hardware both limiting and inspiring what you make. There is something about the limitless possibilities of what you can do in a DAW that is just paralyzing for me. With the ever increasing capabilities of the gear, the Five Obstructions are not just constantly in mind, but a guiding light
Thanks so much! It's a lot to learn, but it's well worth the time :)
Really nice one, Daniel. Also what is that violin sample? Ugh that one did it for me.
Thank you! It’s from the Baths sample pack on Splice
Very helpful, thanks!
What is the process for learning with you?
Glad it was helpful! You can send me a message on instagram (@slowhaste) or an email (slowhastemusic@gmail.com) if you wanna chat about lessons!
Or, are you asking about my personal learning process for the machine hahah, sorry - I couldn’t tell which you were asking!
Someday I hope to save up a few pennies. Stay safe. Keep jamming.
Thanks for the dog picture.
Thanks - you as well!
Sharing dog pics is a passion second only to music for me
How does it feel performing live sets with it? I kind of want something I can play a full set with, without a laptop. I'm not sure what has enough memory or performance ability , would the SP404 be a better option? I have grooveboxes but they're old school and big and I don't want to lug them around (Roland MC909 for example). I'd rather record my tracks and rearrange in something like the MKII. Is that a good workflow you think?
I've never performed a live set with my electronic project, but you could definitely play a full set with the Octa in the same way you would the 404. It just depends on workflow preference I suppose!
Curious to know: are you a drummer? Your percussive grooves are really nice! It’s cool how you choose and program the samples.
I am! I haven’t really played in quite a few years, but that’s how I got my start with music as a kid :)
I think in 2023 there should be a super easy way to bounce or stream audio via USB
You’re not wrong! Fingers crossed for some miracle mkiii
I have a syntakt and overbeidge honestly frustrates me.
Recording over usb into ableton, all of the channels are extremely quiet, and if I apply gain to the recording or pre recording, it becomes super noisy. If I record the syntakt into an interface using traditional cables, there’s no perceptible noise even with gain cranked up but on overbridge over usb it’s basically unusable in a lot of cases.
It sucks to hear everything loud and clear on the device with no noise, only to get quiet and noisy recordings in overbridge.
that would be amazing if they added Overbridge support to Octatrack MK3 and easier way to use USB to transfer into a PC and DAW. I use my TX-6 to record from gear and load into DAW as stems that is easier than mucking about with audio interface and cable nightmares@@SlowHaste
I started using OB last year for the first time after using my Elektrons live and got it to work ok but prefer to record to USB disk and import the stems. OB feels like working in a DAW and takes the fun of the jam aspect out of gear@@Kdkjdjewerdnxa
Why not just use an audio interface? USB is a crap shoot of potential ground noise or latency. Or just get another Elektron device and run it through it.
hmm, thinking of getting one once I finally learn how to use the DT properly..
it has got so many possibilities that it would probably take me quite a long time to learn it...
it kind of feels a bit outdated but it doesn't put me off..
quite pricey and the prices don't seem to go down in foreseeable future..
if the price suddenly drops by 20% I will get one without a hesitation..
otherwise I will just wait for the mk3 if it is ever announced..
thanks for the video
No problem, thanks for watching! It could be worth checking out reverb for a used one, too
I’m literally considering a second OT… if you’re dawless (or even daw minimal hybrid), then OT is awesome
DT is a close second… if I had to choose one, it’d be OT sadly (because I love the DT)
oh boy a 16-track version would be something else
Looks amazing ! Why do you also keep the Digitakt? Debating with myself if I should swap
I like to use the Digitakt in tandem with the Digitone, but honestly prefer to use the Octatrack alone (after I’ve sampled stuff into it). Even though they share some similarities, the workflow and capabilities of the Octatrack are so different that I’ve found it makes me make music a bit differently
@@SlowHaste if you could only keep one would it be the DT or the OT? You don’t miss usb midi & audio on the OT? (And overbridge also)
@@vagueversatile I personally don't use those features, I just track the entire mix once I get it sounding the way I like (I did that with the DT/DN for my most recent album as well !) I'd probably end up keeping the OT if I could only have just one.
I am still very fresh and have a lot of learning ahead of me, but I started my journey with dawless (and music production in general, for that matter) with the Syntakt. Then I bought Microfreak for melodies, but it's not clicking with me. I really dig the Elektron workflow. Now I am thinking of either Digitakt or Octatrack, with the last one definitely being an overkill at my level. My question then is: Should I still go with the Octatrack and grow into it, or should I go Digitakt, get the most of it, then sell (if ever) and buy Octatrack?
What did you decide?
@@philphilphil digitakt. And it's amazing
@@vyrvygora I believe it. I’m between the digitakt and octatrak. Is there a reason why you went with DT? Apart from price
@philphilphil because apart from being a sampler, OT can be many more things (performance mixer, sequencer for other gear, looper, effect unit, etc), and I don't need any of those things at the moment. I am just learning, I don't perform, don't connect other gear to it. DT allows me to focus on creating music, and its capabilities for that are really wide. Also, it costs cheap now because of all the speculations of DT Mk2. But it doesn't matter whether mk2 comes or not, because I could use mk1 only for years to come, and it would still be enough to make unique music with it. I learned it up to "intermediate" level in a weekend. That's also worth a lot. I don't have to fight the device, and can only think about the music.
This is great to hear! The MK1 is still just as powerful as it always was. The prices I've seen them for are incredible, too.
Sounds good
Thanks!
Liked and subscribed because of the dog pics

Do you think someone whose brain works really well with the Digitakt would enjoy using an OT? Or do you think that they are very different devices and someone who really enjoys the DT workflow won't really like the OT (or vice versa) since it won't really translate well? Sorry if that doesn't make a ton of sense, just wanted to get your input since you are someone who enjoys the DT a good amount as well and made the jump
The workflow can be nearly identical if you’re using the same type of samples to make similar music as you are on the DT! There are a few processes that are slightly different, but that just comes down to a difference in menu navigation/shortcuts/etc.
The big difference is how much more the OT can do (if you want it to!) with scenes, live recording/resampling, looping, re-mixing, etc (some of which I haven’t even touched, and I still feel like I’ve gotten my money’s worth out of it). It’s kind of like a DAW, where it can do nearly everything you’d imagine, but that doesn’t mean you *have* to do all of those things with it to get value. I hope that helps!
Your dog is a perfect baby angel
:)))) I agree and will have to let her know!
still love my SH-4d as a groovebox but i'd say a digitakt should be up there to while never owned one
The digitakt is my absolute favorite for immediacy - I usually need some sort of game plan with the Octa, but I’ve been feeling that workflow moreso this year!
that makes perfect sense @@SlowHaste
I have to say I enjoyed the dog pic a lot.
Casper is very happy to hear that
We need a mark 3 where they add Monomachine with octatrack and endless FX and mods similar to evolver. Combine alll three of those magical boxes and they would have alien beast with unlimited potential.
That would certainly be a welcome addition!
i prefer the OT to the dog. but nice
Thanks!
Thanks man! Great review!
Good device but 1500 euros... compared to let's say 300 euros Electribe...you know? For this price device just have to be the best of the bunch! And it sure is.
BTW do you know the bit depth of the files when you dump WAV. files of the project to PC? I can't find this info anywhere!
Thanks for watching! I do not know the bit depth - I’d have to dive into the manual to check that out!
24kbps. Pretty sure it’s that. But it doesn’t take anything higher, so you have to lower 48kbs audio to import via usb.
I agree about the high price of this machine. However, I love Elektron. I got the A4/AR/Dtone/DT/ST/AH. I kept the last 3.
Having an MPC one, (€400 in very good condition). I don't see what would justify the purchase of an Octatrack 3 times more expensive ! I know my MPC well, it integrates perfectly with Elektron devices. I think it can do most of what the OT does. That said, the OT attracts me... Unable to know if it's GAS or not ! *Help* 🤑
@@LunaticDandy Oh, it’s gas. Unless you want to limit yourself, you have more than enough to cover the OT.
@@ubiquitousreverser Thanks ! Sometimes, we have to read it to keep our $/€ !
❤❤❤
Deluge gang rise up
I’m looking for the perfect portable groove box and the Deluge has been highest on my list for quite a while
The new Community firmware maybe a huge upgrade for the Deluge I'm looking forward to...everything seems to be possible now 🙌
I have been playing with Drambo for the last week on iOS. Now I want one of these!
I’ll have to check out Drambo myself!
it's a strange box right?
on the one hand, the same price buys you a computer and software that blows it out the water
the OT is like an old school 80s computer with a tracker and basic effects, it seems insanely over priced on the surface
on the other hand, there's nothing quite like using one
the interaction is tailored just right, you're free to do so much creative stuff with it
and having killer samples to pick from only takes it further
it's absolutely fun to use and inspiring like nothing else
Yes, very well said! I think it speaks volumes that so many hardware all-in-one boxes are still successful today even with the presence of free software that can do so much more
All good... but this sound quality in 2023!? After 4 years I sold my Ot a month ago. I regret that I didn't do it before. Modular world is much more exciting and has much better sound. But still, thanks for the video.
Thanks for watching!
octa is the 🐐;)
Truly!!
@@SlowHaste Great video by the way. .. and Honestly at this point the Octatrack is solid on my never sell list along with my Casio SK-1 and my OG Volca FM 1s.
