Guitar pedals are what initially got me into sound design and synthesis almost 10 years ago. Running my new UDO Super 6 into a couple of my favorite pedals (Hologram Microcosm and Chase Bliss Generation Loss mkii) seemed like the natural thing to do for a nice, relaxing sound design session. I love keeping things simple with the synths, and letting the effects speak for themselves.

Can you make a video titled, "How to tend to your basic needs and grown up responsibilities when you have a shelf full of stuff that does THIS"? I loved every moment of this exploration.

I swear that’s what some of those (oft-memed) specialty dust covers are for. To look nice, yes, but mainly to have a clear and visible “put away” state…

Wow what a massively beautiful synth Super-6 is! Can listen to that for hours (with the headphones on). With the pedals is just heavenly

Guitar pedals rock! I think Jarre was one of the pioneers of synths through guitar pedals in the 70s. But actually we have far more choice with pedals today.

We certainly do have way too many options, in the best way possible :)

I literally just bought one second-hand locally a week ago after over a year of lusting for it. I can tell you, it's even more impressive than you think it is. Some of the drones I've been able to come up with are just epic, and I've just started. Also, the lights on the unit are different colors than you think. I thought they were washed out peach and bright yellow and almost nursery colors, but they're actually incredibly saturated and vibrant orange with red, blue, green and cyan. In fact the lights are almost too bright, haha, you certainly won't lose track of this thing in a dark studio. They're expensive but so well made and will produce results as infinite as the source material you feed into it. Strangely enough, another unit showed up even closer and cheaper on my Facebook Marketplace just yesterday, and these are rare beasts. So maybe the original owners who never had the time/inclination to figure it out are starting to sell them off.

I trolled reverb till I got a good enough deal on one. While it isn't what I expected and it has a lot of functions I still need to learn it's worth the time.

I’m definitely a sucker for videos on the Super 6.
You know, I was worried some of that sparkle might wear off after 2 years, as it did with my microKORG as I got tired of switching between menu layers, but if anything I love it even more than when I first got it. And I’m still discovering depths I didn’t know it had - just as I’d hoped!
I don’t know if there’s been a semi-recent batch to the USA but I’ve noticed a lot more videos in the last 6-9 months, I think I watched every one there was before I made the plunge. It’s been a wee while since I looked for new videos about this, I guess the Super Gemini maybe stoked-up interest too.

I think there was a bit of a S6 sale after they announced the Gemini, so it wouldn't surprise me if more folks picked it up then! I can't wait to see more on that, it's definitely too much synth for my needs (and too big for my space!) but I know a lot of talented deserving musicians will get their hands on it. It's crazy that it's only UDO's 2nd release, too!

@@SlowHaste the Gemini is definitely way too much for me too, and any similar goals can be achieved by doubling up recordings. I don’t need two patches layered live. And the Super 6 already dwarfs everything else I own.
I do kinda wish it had polyphonic aftertouch though, that’s like… the only thing. Really cool MPE controllers are more expensive than a saxophone though and I don’t want it quite THAT much.

Rad video and sounds! Loved your sampling ideology for the Microcosm. Was wondering if you might be able to share a bit about the patch you made thats played at 6:40. Would love to know which oscillators you're using and what kind of modulation you're using to get that vibrato. The tone reminds me Secret of Mana or the anime Made in Abyss. Great stuff.

Thanks! I don’t recall the exact patch details, but it’s def mostly square wave with a good amount of the spread control applied - I’d have to fiddle around to recall what the 2nd oscillator is doing, but it sounds like it could be slightly blended with a triangle!

I just got a Microcosm, so this is really helpful! Do you use a re-amp when connecting it to your synth? Or any pedal with a synth? I've read you need a "re-amp" when connecting guitar pedals to non guitar instruments, but I never see them in frame during videos

    • @billybartcody3591

You can set the input to line level or high-gain.

    • @SlowHaste
      @SlowHaste  11 месяцев назад +1

Yep! A lot of pedals have this setting (the microcosm does), and some other pedals don’t require you to do anything (the stereo CBA stuff)
