The South Devon Railway - far more than just a steam train ride.
We're one of Devon’s and the West Country’s best loved tourist attractions and are the longest established steam railway in the south west. The railway is a seven mile former Great Western Railway branch line, built in 1872, which runs along the stunning valley of the River Dart between Buckfastleigh and Totnes, stopping at Staverton on the way.
We run steam trains with heritage rolling stock and offer a wonderful all day, all weather attraction for families and people of all ages.
While you are with us, you can visit the Totnes Rare Breeds Farm and Dartmoor Otters & Buckfast Butterflies with a great value 3 Great Attractions, 1 Amazing Day joint ticket.

It's a pity Buckfastleigh's 'Goods Shed' is not preserved as a Goods Shed as this would provide a unique attraction
It’s a lovely line! Would recommend to all and explore every station. The staff are excellent and everything is as it was.

Cheddar branch, Glastonbury branch ,yes we all loved this class. Tragic so many died. This one survivor must be restored in memory of the man that saved her.
I love that Class, love that particular engine with it's history and the projekt to get her running again!
I hope after some years at SDR you take her to SVR! I think they will be happy to be reunited with her again

Visiting Devon early October. Any advice as to whether to go Buckfastleigh to Totnes or Totnes to Buckfastleigh? Not sure which way round to do it. Also is it good to get of at Staverton and explore there? Thank you.

From Australia, this is on my list to do later this year. Good informative update: not too long. In my state of Victoria, Australia, the only bullhead rail I can recall still in situ is in a siding off the 'Main Line' from Melbourne to Bendigo, opened in 1862, at what was rural but is now peri-urban historic Gisborne. This line is broad gauge, 1600mm, unlike our national standard gauge network that's (obviously) 1435mm. Great that South Devon Railway runs almost every day. I hope the patronage continues to be good despite all the media headlines about a 'recession'.

Not the best place for the camera, but still a nice film. Hope to be there again this summer.
I love this steamy Driver's Eye View. However, the Llangollen Railway is in deep trouble. Just after lockdown hit for a second time, vandalism hit more severely than ever. Carriage windows have been smashed, seats ripped up and empty alcohol bottles left behind. I'm worried that it might spell the death of what I love so much. I'm the only supporter left of the Llangollen Railway. It doesn't operate in November, apart from a cancelled "Ride the Rocket Train", complete with a Fireworks Display at Glyndyfrdwy. Without money for repairs, it looks like there won't be any Santa Special rides at all this December. What will become of my beloved Foxcote Manor, and my driving and firing sessions with 5 inch gauge steamy, Holy War? Llangollen Railway desperately needs more help than the South Devon Railway does, at this moment in time.

The Santa Specials have been cancelled, the two new engine build projects have gone elsewhere and Foxcote Manor has escaped to the West Somerset Railway. The Llangollen Railway's chances of survival are slim. Without money and volunteers, the railway won't survive. I fear I might not see Foxy again.
Spent a lovely day at the station (8th Sept) during the lockdown and had a great chat with David Hall who was a mind of information and a thoroughly nice gentleman. We'll be back as soon as it's up and running again.

At the time of writing (30/7/20), we are not currently running trains. However, the site at Buckfastleigh is now open every Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday.
