  • This silent clip is a real look back into history , during the first season of operation, 1969. We see the original entrance to Buckfastleigh station, now well and truly buried under the A38, the former sidings and coal yard, similarly buried, and GWR locos 6435, 4555 and 6412 all in steam.
This sight was to disappear two years later, in 1971, when the A38 trunk road was built, cutting across the north end of the station, taking all the yard and sidings and, tragically, one year short of its centenary, the two mile stretch north to Ashburton station with its magnificent Brunel train shed and granite-built engine shed, which was reputedly haunted.
This is a clip from our 50th anniversary video which is available from our eBay shop at www.charity.ebay.co.uk/charit... and from South Devon Railway Gifts & Models at Buckfastleigh station, open during the COVID-19 lockdown on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturday mornings - giftsandmodels@southdevonrailway.co.uk, 01364 644370.
