Unfortunately, the film processing led to a very underexposed, dark tone. I have chosen the most visible portions of this film for the highlight of this 12 minute commercially produced filim. The resolution is very poor and the film is dark, but enjoy it as best you are able. Copyright 1954 Blackhawk Films

Wow. I think the Seaboard Air Line (SAL) RR subsequently acquired at least a couple of the E-8's and used them on the Silver Comet. They may have remained in Katy livery for a year or so -- there should be some photos of them at the station in Atlanta (where "Katy" would look a bit out of place).

Shame it couldn't keep going. I'm an operating volunteer at the Illinois Railway Museum, and we have an original Rock Island geep in our collection. When it came time to repaint it from the CNW colors it arrived in, our superintendent, who started out as a dispatcher and tower operator on the Rock toward the very end, figured we could have some fun and paint it blue and white.

Thanks for watching and your comment means alot to Rock Island fans. If the Rock Island had been able to continue operating for several more years, I believe a restructure and eventual salvage could have been possible given all the East-West container traffic that developed after the advent of global trade. I miss the Rock Island and had several friends working on the railroad at time of shutdown.

@@timetable5245 Especially with the loss of the Choctaw Route, that seems like the dumbest thing. Not many east-west routes at that part of the country. In the Chicago area, we still have bits of Rock Island heritage left. A number of their stations are still standing. LaSalle, Ottawa, Bureau, and many of the old wooden stations on the South Side of Chicago, still served by Metra. The Blue Island station and tower are still in service. as is the tower at 16th St. just south of LaSalle Street Station. And the movable bridges at Joliet and Rock Island Arsenal. Metra even repainted one of their MP36 locomotives in red and gold, to go along with an MP36 painted orange and maroon, an F59 painted green and gold, and an F40PH-2M painted silver with red and black trim.

Been a train fan all my life as well as a life long Texan. Love the Katy. I run Lionels as a hobby in retirement and even thought there's not that much out there, I run as much MKT as I can, freight and Texas Special. As far as road names go, Lionel is obsessed with the NYC, AT&SF, and anything they can slap "Pennsylvania Flyer" on. Ugh. Keep up the good work, keep the Texas Rails rolling!

Thanks for watching and your comment. Those were the good ole days. I enjoyed hanging around the MKT depot in our small town. The agent knew me and allowed me to listen in on the dispatcher's phone and it was quite a thrill. I loved to watch the agent take train orders and hand up orders to a slow moving train and head end crew while anticipating the arrival of the caboose and a friendly greeting from the rear brakeman and conductor. Now, train orders, the depot, the jobs and the railroad are gone. Younger folks have no idea what railroading was really like. Maybe this channel and comments like yours will help them see railroading history.

Many of you may not know this, but a original CRI&P Pullman Bilevel still serves on her home rails. Metra 7869 was built for the Rock in 1970, she served in regular commuter service into the RTA well after CRI&P went under. A few years ago CRI&P 7869 was rebuilt into a bike car with her lower level being solely space for bikes and her upper level for the riders. The Rock will always live on, CRI&P 7869 is that beating heart of the former Rock Island.

Thanks so much for watching and your comment. This is really great to know and thanks for bringing it to our attention. What a great story. I only wish I had shot several more rolls of film when I was in El Reno that day. My dad and I were walking through the deadlines and shops with no one else around having a great time taking pictures. Then we saw an unmarked car approaching us driven by a man in civilian clothes and he identified himself as a Rock Island Special Agent. I didn't ask to see his badge, but he had a revolver with a 6 inch barrel laying beside him on the bench seat which was identification enough for me. He was very nice to us and we talked awhile. He told us we had to move off railroad property and we assured him we would do just that. The magnificent old diesel shop that stood for decades was razed several years ago. The yard office and yard tower lights are gone. I doubt any of the original track in the yard is left today.

In the mid 1950s I would sometimes go to work with my Dad on Saturdays. He worked in downtown Dallas and it was a special day to see #7 working and going over the triple overpass as he drove to work. I was around 8 years old then and Dad would always drive as slow as possible so I could get a good look. I had Lionel trains back then and my Dad shared his love for trains as he enjoyed the trains big and small, as much as I did. I was very fortunate to find an individual selling off his HO train collection in February of this year. After talking a bit he mentioned he had a builder modify a brass SP 0-6-0 switcher to match the #7 used at the Union Terminal in Dallas. He asked me if I had any interest in such a loco. After he heard my childhood stories and love for the #7, he said he would sell it to me as he wanted it to go to someone who had a love for this loco. He had well over $800 invested in this project and that did not include the original price of the brass loco. The loco has DCC & sound and runs (and looks) great. I got it for way less than his investment just because he was glad to see it go to a good home. I still have a soft spot for an 0-6-0 loco today and have several for my layout. Before the #7 was moved to Frisco Texas, I would go to the fair grounds in Dallas and take photos of it there and I must have 60 or so photos in my file. The memories of the #7 and the good times with my Dad are very special now.

Thanks for watching and your comment. Your personal story about No. 7 adds alot to the channel and helps many others understand the significance of this locomotive to Dallas area railfans and the community at large. Thank you.
