Thank you for posting this video. I remember seeing MKT passenger trains going through the "cut" between Gevers Street and New Braunfels Avenue in San Antonio. Amtrak's northbound Texas Eagle utilizes the former MKT tracks (going through the cut). The southbound Texas Eagle utilizes the former Missouri Pacific entering San Antonio. The MKT named their cars assigned to the Texas Special. At 0:19 Car 1205, the "New Braunfels" is shown. At 0:50 Car 1207, the "Denton" is shown. At 1:16 Car 1204, the "Pryor"is shown. After the MKT exited the passenger train business, Car 1205 became Northern Pacific 530 while Car 1207 became Northern Pacific 529.
Very sad that such a beautiful depot was torn down. You can see even in 1961 Katy was struggling financially. Beautiful tile work inside and the obligatory Seth Thomas #2 on the wall for time. Thanks for posting this.
Thanks for watching and your comment. Most likely, if the depot had survived into the 1990's it would have been marked for historical preservation. It is unfortunate there was no recognition for that at the time.
It was losing mail and express packages to trucks. Total loss was the end of the trains. Depot was taxed to build highways and airports, so were the tickets.
Love the pics of your dad visiting with the rail workers. Is that San Antonio Union Station? Been through there twice on Amtrak excursions. Thanks for sharing.
The station in these pictures are of the MKT depot that was torn down in 1969. San Antonio's current depot is the former Southern Pacific station that serves Amtrak.
San Antonio never had a Union Station. Amtrak uses a newer building modeled after the SP depot which is now The Espee event center. MP had another depot west of downtown which is now owned by VIA Transit.
Before ending Passenger Service since the Mid 60's

All three railroads which had served San Antonio are now one--UP. BNSF and CPKC hold trackage rights.
The Katy didn’t waste any time demolishing their depots. How did the one in Temple escape destruction?
Thanks for watching and your comment. Sadly, this beautiful depot was torn down a few years after passenger service ended.
Like the one at the end of the line in Katy texmilepost 156
It was moved by me to its new location
