Finally!!!! - Ink lines after 7 long months
Well, well. here we are ...as I say in the introduction ( or mumble!) I honestly thought it was only a matter of weeks, but on checking, it turns out seven months have passed since I uploaded the painting stage of this sketchbook piece. There are a few reasons for the gap in uploading, not the least of who are my cardiac issues, which will soon be resolved, courtesy of the immensely skilled cardiac surgeons at the Leeds General Infirmary. Once that's done, and I've recuperated, I should be back firing on all cylinders....
Before then though, I have at least two more projects to film, which I will upload at monthly( or even less) intervals.....
Thank you all again for your ongoing support, and...

A watercolour landscape in my Sketchbook
Просмотров 2 тыс.7 месяцев назад
I decided to try something different this time: a traditional watercolour landscape( no ink lines) working from a photograph I saw in a newspaper. As you'll gather from my commentary, all was going well until I decided to try be much more painterly and get to grips with the overhanging trees, which were casting the lovely shadows. Big mistake. You can make up for own mind, but I preferred the p...

Happy New Year. I've not been well ( just manflu), so it's taken a good few weeks longer than planned , and I'm still not 100% and not quite back up to full speed, so here's a very quick video to fill the gap until I have the energy to create a full on new painting to film. I've been keeping my hand and eye in by making a few sketches in a pocket sketchbook, so I thought I would film the proces...
Sketchbook tour December 2023

Well, despite my resolving to create new videos more often, it's been well over two months, for which I apologise. I've still not been able to film a new process video-but I will, very soon (once I finish my last Christmas commission) but in the interim, here's a quick look through my experimental sketchbook. My mumbled commentary will explain what I'm trying to achieve, but I do hope you enjoy...
Staithes looking up to Cowbar: the initial drawing stage
Просмотров 3,6 тыс.Год назад
After far too long( but I do have a reasonable excuse, as I explain) here's a new drawing in progress, just the ink lines at first. I'll film the painting stage, and share that , too. I'll also work on my presentation skills before my next to-camera piece!!! :-)))))
Loose watercolour on continuous line drawing
Просмотров 6 тыс.Год назад
So, this is the watercolour stage of the pen and wash piece I uploaded a few days ago. As I say in. my mumbling commentary, when adding watercolour to such a loose drawing, the challenge is always to retain that looseness, and I feel I may have failed in that respect, as I could feel myself starting to be more precise in the colour stage. Oh well...I can try again.
A continuous line drawing demonstration 21 Feb
Просмотров 4,5 тыс.Год назад
This is part one of a line and wash demo: the line drawing took about 7-8 minutes( once I stopped waffling on about my book!!!), and a s I say, I think this is a great exercise to try , which will improve your looking and drawing skills. The initial lines were drawn with a Unpin 0.1, then stranger lines added with my Kaweco brass fountain pen. Hope you enjoy this...see you in part two in a week...
Watercolour tutorial -adding colour to my drawing of a Dales washing line 1080

After far too long, here's a new video of my attempt to match the looseness of the 8 minute drawing with an equally swift watercolour stage. It failed though, as by virtue of the medium, you do need to let washes dry if you don't want them to run into each other. If they do, however, you need to embrace the mistake, as I did with the random bleed on the skyline, which suddenly turned int a clump...
LEVENS HALL watercolour stage HD
Просмотров 2 тыс.Год назад
Warning: viewer discretion advised! This video contains scenes of a distinctly awful watercolour sky, and there is no excuse for how it turned out: I ignored my own often-repeated advice to leave a wash alone after the initial brush stroke, and well.....you can see the results. I apologise for my distinctly churlish remarks ( at least I managed not to swear!!) I;'m doubly annoyed as I didn't th...

Well hello again. It’s been quite some time since I’ve posted a video to this channel, for various reasons. One of the main ones was the devastating loss of our family dog (& my best pal) Billy earlier in the summer which skewed life for a little while. Bruce (the young Springer who makes a brief appearance) is another family pet who we are looking after for a week. So: I’ve not been able to fi...
A quick watercolour technique on a dry stone wall
Просмотров 11 тыс.2 года назад
Apologies of the radio silence for the last few weeks: life's been a little challenging on a few fronts, but I thought it was time for a new clip, so here we are. One of the components you might often see in my drawings is that great British tradition...the dry stone wall( although I'm well aware they are a feature all across the globe, too). In this quick demo, I demonstrate just one technique...
Adding watercolour quickly colour to a Dales lane HD
Просмотров 4,5 тыс.2 года назад
This is a very quick demonstration of how I respond to the most-often asked question I come across at demos and workshops: " how do you decide where to add selective colour?' I drew the scene again, very quickly: (7 minutes) and decided to use it as the basis for a demonstration of one of my techniques for adding minimal watercolour washes to a line drawing. Again, this is just one of the ways ...

Watercolour washes over the line drawing of farm buildings in the Yorkshire Dales
The end could show the original farm buildings so it could be compared.
The original buildings are shown right at the start Anita-do you mean I should have repeated the photo at the end? You could always take a screen shot to compare? I can't really go back in now and re-edit a three year old video...sorry, and thanks for watching- John
Nice to have you back John. Another inspiring video as always! I've thoroughly enjoyed your first book and look forward to seeing the next. Hope your health issues are resolved soon and that you feel much better. Take care.

Welcome back John. I hope all continues to go well with your health.
Welcome back John! A new book? Wow! Great news! 🎉🎉🎉
Hope you are better soon, John. Thank you for the book. I found it so useful in my new interest, esp the step by step guides. At least the watercolour should be dry after 7 months !
Lovely to see you back, John. Sorry to hear about the health issues but your health comes first and it is more important to get that sorted out. I really enjoyed the line drawing and the quick look through your sketchbook. I've got your lovely 2024 calendar and I'm looking forward to your new books. Well done!
You’ve been missed! Congratulations on your book and that you’ve been asked to do another 🎉
Thank you! You’re very kind 🙏
Oh thank you!
Thank you, John! I'm so happy to see you again.
Saw you had posted a video and had to watch it immediately! 😊
Hope you enjoyed it!
Great to see you back, John! I hope your health issue is resolved quickly and thoroughly. I'm already looking forward to your next video 😉
Nice to have you back.
Yo John. As a coincidence I was doing a watercolor of a dry stone wall today. No ink, alas. I was thinking of you the whole time. I’m happy to hear your voice and see your stylistically changing style. Carry on!
That is awesome! Thank you 🙏
I can barely wait for your line and wash book to be released on Amazon on Oct 1. You’ve got another in the spring?! It’s like waiting for Christmas repeatedly. I’m so looking forward to them both!
Pleased I’ve found your channel!
Thanks Tracy
Can I ask please the type of moleskine book you’re using, the model or version is my question? I ask as some of my moleskine books are certainly not suitable for watercolours nor inks? Thanks in advance.
Hi Greg, When I use a Moleskine book, I always select the watercolour version, which is made with a cold pressed watercolour paper. www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=moleskine+watercolor+sketchbook&adgrpid=50663787342&hvadid=259097453660&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=9194097&hvnetw=g&hvqmt=e&hvrand=6172500253995711249&hvtargid=kwd-492222166512&hydadcr=5361_1829754&tag=googhydr-21&ref=pd_sl_18bm1h200v_e Of ale the though, I've been using a similar product from Seawhite of Brighton, which has the added bonus of laying flat across a two page spread without too much additional pressure. All of my equipment and materials are covered in some depth in my book... drawninyorkshire.com/pen-and-washthe-book/ Hope this helps?
@@JohnHarrison51 Thankyou John and have shared the link for your new book with my wife and daughters for a Father’s Day gift!
I realise I’m 3 years late John, but congratulations on reaching 1,000 mate!
Enjoying your work and guidance Young John.
Very impressive work! I’ve recently heard that you have released a how-to book and have located where to buy. Thankyou!
The delaminated barn has collapsed a bit more but I too managed a sketch of it in fulfilment of my having wanted to sketch it every time I went up to the road to Reeth . It’s Swaledale, mind you…
What brand of Water Soluable ink pen do you use in some of your drawings?I’m unable to find many types of them.
The one I use most often and the one at the start of the video is a Unipin. They are available in nibs from 0.01 to 0.1. I also use Pigma Micron which are the same from a different manufacturer. Both are widely available on Amazon, or several art sites and shops here in the UK. Hope this helps?🙏
Yes please
Always love your vids. Your skills look so effortless. 👌
Hi, my Dad is a fan of yours and passed on your lockdown books to look at. Glad he did. Love your ways of working. Thank you for sharing your methods. Love this video 👍🏻
Thank you Roy🙏
❤️
Really the best ink ! 👌
I enjoy doing this as a warm up. This was a brilliant demo, thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you! This is so helpful. It makes the white page less scary. I want to tackle my sketchbook now😊
Fantastic my dear friend. Love ❤it. Subscribed now
Really enjoyed this, thanks for posting. Going to have a go myself 🙂
Hi John, just taken delivery of your new book, and I am currently reading it (at midnight. I couldn't wait til tomorrow!). I can't tell why you were so proud of it at your class I attended in Huddersfield last month. It is definitely going to be my favourite art book. I have booked on your next course at Calderdale Arts so I may have to bring it along just in case I need some top tips! 😊 Thanks again, very happy with my purchase! Cherise
Did you ever do the wash stage of this drawing? Could not find it. Thank you.
I did, yes...you can find it here: ruclips.net/video/kBVNH24cqpQ/видео.htmlsi=8yfFizjoZpqHfDbG
Radio in background very distracting BTW
Yes. This was over 3 years ago, one of my first videos.🥴 It’s a learning curve…..
😂 reminded me of days in Arch studio ….
What is the dip pen you are using
Found it in an antique shop-no maker on it 🤷🏼♂️
Interesting…😢
Thank you for the generosity of your time and skill in making this video and sharing it with us. Love your work!
Do you find that loose almost fluid work done with ink sells to western audiences? Especially if someone does more fluid type mixed in with hard edges. For recency I am referring to work similar to a Malaysian Asian Kiah Keene does
And there's me thinking, it was just me that dropped a goolie in a pic...looking forward to the one sheet wonder! Thanks for the honest thoughts..
Love this thank you
What sketch book are you using?
It’s a watercolour journal from Seawhite of Brighton amzn.eu/d/9lkCjgI
