Swiss vs English lever escapement

This video explains the differences between Swiss and English lever escapements regarding the shape of the escape wheel teeth as well as the impulse planes. These differences give the Swiss lever escapement greater efficiency than the English lever escapement and greater ease of self-starting. If the watch has Hardy's banking (devised around 1800), there's no problem with a tripping escapement. Many Swiss pivoted detent watches were fitted with this device.

    It's a coaxial cylinder escapement.

  • @kovacskovacs3465
    @kovacskovacs3465 6 месяцев назад

    The cam of the cylinder/arbor needs to better allow the escape wheel to slide along its natural path as the tooth is being released, instead of a sudden drop. There's too much shock as it is, given the direct impulse nature of the design.

  • @kovacskovacs3465
    @kovacskovacs3465 6 месяцев назад

    I believe that the teeth from the lever that's mated with the roller lever (attached to the balance staff) introduce too much friction and shock. Even if each escape wheel provides a low enough direct+direct or direct+indirect impulse delivery, there's still energy lost to friction. And, the balance wheel via the staff will be subject to continuous shock since it's essentially directly connected to the lever. For the point of contact between the roller and lever (top half), a traditional roller and lever may be more efficient. The bottom half works.

  • @kovacskovacs3465
    @kovacskovacs3465 6 месяцев назад

    It's nice that the spring detent lever isn't hit twice like on some other designs where the spring gets hit with no impulse benefit (i.e. the detent is in the way on the return trip). Is the "mainspring" (in this case, the power via weight/gravity) for the power wrapped around the lever to provide the impulse to the balance wheel like on traditional Swiss lever escapements? Or is it wrapped around the balance wheel staff (in which case, that may be too much torque, while the spring lever is providing the power to only push the bottom lever up)? Given this setup with where the detent is, I'm thinking it's the latter or it wouldn't be any different from a conventional lever escapement, and there would be no need for the detent to be there to provide power as the weight already does that.

    The English escapement closely resembles the Graham escapement in pendulum clocks. Is it a coincidence?

  • @watchmakerful
    @watchmakerful 6 месяцев назад

    This escapement is used also in the opposite way in electro-mechanical watches. The balance wheel is driven by electromagnetic coils and rotates the escapement wheel via two pallet disks.

    I've watched it many many times now and still don't get why the fork has a middle tine, which seems redundant with the upper tine, at 1:24 that middle tine and the grey escapement tooth are labeled "indirect impulse", which is confusing because isn't it the balance wheel that needs the impulse not the fork, then later at 1:54 the upper tine and the orange escapement tooth are labeled "direct impulse" and the balance wheel gets its needed impulse. for this to make any sense for me the things that need to be explained are why are the "direct impulse" and the two "locking repos" actions less friction here than in traditional escapement, and why the second escapement, wheel which seems to only power the fork not the balance wheel, finally a note to the builder, the acorn nuts on the rim of the balance wheel are very distracting and obscuring, we can see the wheel's rotation just fine from the wheel's spokes and from the hairspring.

    • @Waterpearl_escapement
      @Waterpearl_escapement Год назад

      The middle tine of the fork has the function of preventing overbanking, it exists in most escapement. For the indirect impulse, the escapement wheel gives the torque to the fork, which retransmits to the balance wheel through the impulse-pin (roller-pin) of the balance wheel

    EXCELLENT. This is the best example of showing how the coaxial escapement works. I never fully understood how the impulse was transmitted to the balance until now. The 'centre jewel' of the pallet fork (probably not the correct term) gets the kick from the smaller of the two escape wheels sharing the same axle. Question now is - why does anyone make an escapement any other way now? Why does the traditional lever escapement even exist any more?
