I really wanted to see Bene Gesserit lose! Their breeding programme and something about the way they resent love really gets in my nerves. The Bene Gesseits have no moral right to call the Honored Matres whores. Anyways, I still really enjoyed this book. Thank you for the summary, helped me piece together a couple of things that weren't clear in the first reading.

I find that commentators I’ve listened to so far tend to not discuss how Lydgate was the author of his own demise in many ways. In a big ways. There’s that scene at the beginning where he’s involved with the French dancing girl which was disastrous, and let’s remember he himself fell into debt and made his own choices. in the end he -compromised his own in just about every way including working for rich people and giving up his scientific research. Yes, Rosamund was not a good match for him personally, but he did make her believe they were going to have a very different life and she was disillusioned. I think that’s fair. Remember at the beginning of their marriage and even in their engagement He was spending freely and in many ways he lacked sense. Yes, by all means Dorothea would have been the perfect wife for him, and what a great team they would’ve been - going out there and changing the world together. BUT She had her strong views, and he had his weakness for pretty women. Alas!

I genuinely disliked this book. Thank you for this review, I gave up on it and you confirmed that I was good not to waste my time. You are a good reviewer! Books like this show me that anyone can get published. It’s very cheap writing and I find the problems very small, it’s just a story of middle class people wading through inconsequential life. It is like reading about Sims.

I kind of gambled on this series because I bought the whole trilogy at once without fully trusting the hype back when the movies were running and I didn't watch them. Jackpot! I was as involved in her story and character as I was in some of my childhood favourites and the books barely lasted a week if I remember correctly. Also, the movies turned out to be nice too. Funnily, I too recently thought about re-reading the series but for now I think I'll enjoy your commentary instead :)

I remember reading this in college and finding it so confusing. I later read The Eye, Nabakovs novela and become hooked on his style. Pale Fire is the most entertaining Nabakov for me. In Pale Fire we get a fictional foreword and commentary (Kinbote), and the autobiographical poem itself (which can very much be read all on its own) We also get the implied story about the relationship between the poet, and the commentator/publisher Kinbot's attempt at hijacking the novel with his own story and musings is too much, from the start. It's also cool that Nabakov can write an 999 line poem that's merely a jumping off point for the bigger story about its writer and publisher Then there's themes gosh, where do we begin... There's so much jam packed into this book, and it aint even that long. Overall super fun

In the prelude Elliott talks about Saint Theresa and her brother seeking martyrdom in the land of the Moors. Westerners don't change even as we speak that western colonial state Israel is seeking not so much martyrdom but to enact justice on these non white infidels and savages for responding to their violence against them and stealing their land more than seven decades ago. PS Dorothea resembles many white saviour women going to the global south to civilise the savages to this very day. But they are wolves in sheeps clothing no different from their white men folk exploiting and dehumanizing the local population. Did the Americans really go into Afghanistan to free Afghan women ! White women are a curse to the women of the global south. The sooner they realise this then only then will they and all their people be on the real path to freedom.

I am very motivated becoming an Emma Cline reader after this great video. I like the way the tension between insiders and outsiders being portrayed. It looks like in our world, the new cast system is accepted by the majority and it is safe for everyone to remain where they are. The ones who attempt to move up are outcasts who will always live under the stress of being identified. I also felt like she is very regretful about the life she has chosen and targets she has put forward. This anxiety sounded very much of a religious subconscious living in each individual even if we think we are ultra secular.

You have a really great way of organising your thoughts and explaining points clearly, I really enjoyed listening to this while i work! This is my favourite Austen work too and you really can feel how all of the books that came before were leading to this one. Anne is the most relatable protagonist imo bc she is so balanced - she is not uber shy and retiring but not loud and out there either. She's just a normal person. The older i get, the more i love her

Unfortunately in the edition I read there was a foreword (a real foreword note the one that is part of the book), that should have been a afterword, that was already telling that Kinbote was crazy. So one part of the fun of reading and starting to doubt Kinbote was never there for me. But I found him funny more that once. His total blindness to what could interest a reader of the comment of the poem is art by itself.
