I can’t say I’m an Edmund hater as I think his small acts of kindness throughout Fanny’s life are very moving, especially as he has had pretty terrible parental examples so it’s some kind of miracle that he turned ok (not perfect by any means, but nice and fine!) but I can absolutely see why so many people are team Henry. I love the speech he gives Fanny after he reads Shakespeare and she’s kind of captivated by him for the first time, he says something like “I will deserve you”. It’s such a powerful proclamation and he really does change throughout the novel in surprising ways, which is why it’s so incredibly frustrating that he squanders it all by going after Maria, more out of spite than actual attraction. He essentially ruins her on purpose, and in doing so ruins any chance of being with Fanny who did seem like she was gradually starting to come around to him. It’s such a rich and complex novel about one good human (Fanny) amongst lots of crappy ones
