I read this book a while ago. Sad to think of what three generations of the Irish are going through. Bringing it to the level of sisters, downright scary. Kids playing on the streets with gunfire going off all over. It was normalized. ☘

Derry Girls made me want to learn about The Troubles too. I'm considering buying this book for my birthday.

A bit of a correction after the 1st hunger strike a year passed and none of demands were given. So bobby sands and others took it upon themselves to do a 2nd one knowing they'd likely die this time.
Gerry Adams asked them to not do the hunger strike because he knew they'd die as well, but they weren't interested in listening to him. One IRA man who knew all the 10 dead hunger strikers said they went through such hardships in prison together getting battered everyday, totured, that they became brothers.
They all died one after another to not let each other down and die as brothers against margaret thatcher/british force and their will to break them. He said the war wasn't in the streets anymore, its was in the prison.
The british wanted to destroy the republican forever. They quitely got all their demands for the other inmates after they all died. Thatcher just couldn't be seen publicly given in but she eventually did in the background.

Im 40 and live in England - I had very little knowledge about The Troubles actual history either. I do remember hearing about a lot IRA bombings/killings on the news in 80s and 90s. I remember always wondering why Jerry Adams was dubbed over on TV with diffetent voices.....now I know! The IRA itself if a vast subject. There were various organisations who used the name IRA going back to 1918 or thereabouts. I'm severely dyslexic and struggle to read from a page but use Audiable instead. My concentration is fairly poor too. Your summary was helpful in clarification of some bits I was confused about after listening to it. I will do so again I think as I did find it fascinating.
Pat Finucane was a name which was mentioned a lot on the news when I was young and this book explains all about him too. That aspect was rather disturbing!
Learning that our "deep state" - not meaning to sound too conspiracy minded - had so much knowledge about what was going on and such active involvement at times is quite unsettling too. Things were very far from black and white right and wrong I now realise. Empire of Pain is another book by the same author which lead me to this one. It's much more relevant to USA - but a fascinating story and piece of research too.
Learning how good and decent people can do some fairly terrible things is fascinating too.
A Perfect Spy is a book I'd highly reccomend if you don't know it? It is not a Spy thriller as such. No one reviews it on RUclips which is a shame. New Yourk Times has a very thorough review of it

Thank you for this comment and the recommendation! I'd like to read more from this writer, especially since he's coming to my city to talk about his new book. I'm glad you enjoyed my video!

@@CarolineSutphin I'd never heard of him until recently. Empire of Pain had some extracts read out on the radio a while ago and I found it fascinating so downloaded the unabridged audio book then found this one after that. I never even realized the value of books until a few years ago - as terrible as that must sound! I'm not at all academic!!

A non Northern Irish person reading up on our culture is a green flag
