Class A shares are to be "traded", or bought at discount. Preferred shares can be bought, but only below par
Plus Preferred get redeemed at PAR
Another great video Mike! These split shares are definitely not for the faint of heart or those who don’t understand how they work. Many make the mistake of buying them at a premium instead of a discount.
Just came across this. It’s not allowing me to register
I'm in the opposit, i've just started a position today at $19,80.
It pays to know what you’re buying, always. They lever up the portfolio and pay preferred shareholders first. If NAV doesn’t meet the prescribed threshold (that preserves the portfolio value to cover preferred shareholders) then the class A shareholders get nada. Note: all of this is laid out in clear terms so it’s very predictable when they won’t be paying distributions to class A. It’s never a random event that catches the investors by surprise.
I know that, and I would never get into that kind of product due to its very poor performance in general. But I would not assumed that investors read everything... I found a lot of investors getting caught by surprise as they literally count on that income in their budget. By definition, if you get this product for the income and you know that sooner or later you will not receive it... what's the point? It's literally chasing an income focused product that you know will fail you.
@ All investments require some form of “maintenance,” like checking the dividend triangle and business fundies. At least these guys have clearly defined terms that tell you ahead of time when dividends will stop. In the meantime, double the yield plus capital gains is probably worth the effort for some investors (FWIW, I don’t hold any at this time). Just have to weigh effort against life cycle returns. For example, if half the time they don’t pay dividends and pay double the rate when they do… might as well hold something at half the rate throughout. This assumes capital gains are similar. I suspect they pay more than 50% of the time, but haven’t analyzed to that depth. Here’s another reason they may appeal to some investors. Since they hold a portfolio (some are more diversified than others, for sure), the volatility will be lower if you have limited funds. Basically, you can pick up a nice yield and some capital gains, just have to set a price alert and check in every once in a while to see if the terms have changed (threshold for dividend payment). What do you when you sell it? That’s more interesting, because it probably happens when market is down.
My best CAD - BN & PRL My best USD - cava, bros My worst CAD - T & TD My worst USD - AMD & ABNB Happy Holidays, merci for your great channel
Bon matin, any opinion on canadian apartments please. I don't understand why stock on all time low
Would be nice to see same type of video in the future with something that actually do CC on the index like ISPY, GPIX, perhaps you wont lose as much and also recive more dividends since they yiled around 9%-10%
Unfortunately, both ETFs you suggest have been around for about a year which is definitely not enough to test a product (I even mentioned that JEPI doesn't have an interesting history to make a real comparison). But so far, both covered call ETFs are trailing behind SPY (total return of 23.86% for GPIX, 24.69% for ISPY and 27.86% for SPY). Over 12 months, it's still a big difference, but it's too soon to draw any conclusions. However, by the nature of the product (writing covered calls), you are 100% sure to leave money on the table unless the asset you write cover calls on is on systemic decline forever (which you certainly don't want to hold that kind of asset anyway). Happy Holidays!
I sold Telus Internatonal some months ago at a huge loss; what a dog. And this week I sold off all my Telus shares in my RIFF and closed out the account. What a dog stock.
Congratulations on the amazing 2024! Do take time to celebrate 🎉 and looking forward to 2025 😊
LMAT is no longer debt free, 5 days ago price dropped 9% on news of them selling debt. Actually, your favorite stock of all time, ZIM, beat LMAT in year to date at +63.4% (NOT counting the huge dividends!), which shows how fickle it is to look at short windows of time. Best Canadian might be Transalta TA.TO at +80.5% (now that it dipped back a ways), I sold 1/3 as I thought it was speculation, just like with CPX, on Alberta attracting data centers. Happy solstice today and happy Holidays to you and family.
My favorite of all time? I only said that ZIM looks like a bad investment in april of 2021 😉 I don’t follow this one with much attention. I’m glad for you it generating lots of profit 😁
Mike? It was a joke!! I follow you on different platforms, monthly webinars, podcasts and you tubes. I actually heard you mention that company not just once, but many times and always as an example of the kind of investment to avoid at all costs!
@@earnmyturns6305 Sorry, I get too many trolls these days hahaha! When I mention ZIM, I refer to the big hype of 2021. Today, I really have no clue what they do differently or not ;-). I would still not invest in it ;-) Happy Holidays!
My best performers were MFC CM CPX and also my only ETF VUN. My worst of course hands down to BCE and T . Last year I sold AQN This year I sold BCE But i moved on because we have 32 holdings so if one or two did bad the rest did thrive. Merry Christmas to you and your family Mike !
Best was EQB, worse T.
Joyeux Noël Mike ! Best performer : CPX & BN Worst performer : Telus & PFE Not worrying too much about Telus, but Pfizer was one of the first company I bought. I might lack conviction about this one and also I find the Healthcare Industry complicated. Merci pour tous les podcasts ! Moose on the loose et Dividend Guy joue dans mon auto à chaque jour :P
Thanks for this!
Hi Mike, BCE is yielding 12%. Is the dividend safe given their cash flow? Please do an episode on it!
I've done several episodes on BCE this fall :-). You can retrieve them on this channel (I even have a full video with graphs and stuff :-) ).
@@DividendGuy ok thanks!!
Thanks Mike, enjoyed this video. Question, how do you manage your portfolio when it comes to a single stock allocation, assuming you consider all accounts together as a single portfolio. Let’s say you decided to hold AAPL only within your RRSP, would you consider entire 5-10% weights of the total portfolio in a single company within RRSP? Thanks
Good question! I look at AAPL total weight across all my portfolio. Therefore, it's possible that I'm overweight in this stock for one portfolio but not when I look at the global view including all my accounts.
You sold cnq
No, it was never part of this portfolio.
having that much individual stocks. why not just going with ETF
Watch the video, I explain why I prefer to have stocks 🙂
I love you analogies Mike. Another great insight!
Trying to make it more interesting :-)
Appreciate you posting these podcast episodes here on RUclips Mike! Best performing Canadian: IAG Worst performing Canadian: DOO Best performing US: DKS Worst performing US: PEP
Hey Mike. The monthly webinar was great per usual.😊
Thx Dean! It's my favorite part of the month 🙂
Thanks for everything Mike. DSR has made doing my homework on stocks so much easier. I came for help while I was taking a master's and I stayed because the service provides so much added value.
Thank you so much Richard! I wish you and your family a wonderful Christmas and a healthy & wealthy New Year!
@DividendGuy same to you Mike

Top performer US: Motorola Solutions (MSI) at 49% and worst performer: Uber -10%. Top CAD performer: Dollorama (DOL.TO) at 45% and worst performer is Couche-Tard (ATD.TO) at 1%... ouch!
When your worst performer is positive, you had a good year ;-)

Mike, I have been watching for a while but have never commented. I am a big fan of Moose on the Loose and your other videos. They are always so informative. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family. Take care
Thank you James! Happy Holidays!!
🎉 nice seeing you pop up in my feed Mike ! Enjoyed your 2-part “Moose on the Loose” episode on Telus. Thanks for being such a big part of my financial journey.
Thank you so much :-) I'll have more coming for 2025 :-D
My top performer was TMX group (X.t) Worst was toromont...
I really like TMX! it has been a great performer for a while :-)
Thanks!
you're welcome!
Congratulations Mike, you're such an inspiration!🎉
Thank you! I'm just trying to help other investors and share my passion :-)
Is VEQT the Canadian equivalent?
I am bag holding 350 shares of Telus at 25 dollars. The same reasons I bought the company are the same reasons I'm holding. There is also insider buying amongst the board members and the CEO which is very encouraging. Zoom out a bit.
I'll hold as long as cash flow metrics are getting better :-) In the end, cash is truly king.
For me, the difference between the USD and Canada is just life, its ups and downs do not bother me so much. Budget wise, when spending in US dollars I downgrade or substitute, or eat out a few times less. What does bother me is the atrocious conversion rates the banks offer. I signed up with an exchange company which offers better rates, then I discovered Norbert's gambit. Norbert's gambit regarding currency conversion is buying an interlisted stock, then selling in the opposit market, for example buying RY in the US market and then selling the same shares on the Canadian market, or vis versa. The cost is the brokerage fees plus arbitrage errors. So on $10k, you can save $200+ fees. Some brokerages allow you to do this directly, some you have call and have them transfer the shares to the opposing market.
I only use Norbet Gambit too! The worst part is that banks tell you "there are no fees" to exchange your money! haha!
Crazy how you always make an episode exactly on what im thinking about already.
Din’t turn around, I’m right behind you 😂
Ha me too!
Got rid of it earlier this year and bought POW - the latter went up 27% and paid me greater than 5% dividend
Nice move!
I am happy if you are happy mate, will see what happens. If the dividend and company rating changes I am out!
I wouldn’t say I’m happy, but I’m okay haha!
Good for you Mike!..its so very important to take care of ourselves!...hapy holidays and thanks for your most informative videos/podcasts!
is this ETF TFSA safe?
What’s TFSA safe?
Very helpful, thanks Mike!
Anytime!
I have zero confidence in telecommunications and retail sectors
There are plenty of opportunities in other sectors 😁
Good stuff as always, Mike. As a fellow T shareholder, I feel your "pain"...lol. But as you correctly said...proper diversification is key. :)
We need a few bad performing stocks to help us appreciate the good ones :-) haha!
Canadian equities in general have been struggling recently, whats your take?
I typically ignore short term movements, it's just noise. When you look at the economy and the crisis at the Government, that's enough to justify fluctuation :-)
Great podcast Mike! You’re an excellent teacher. Very easy to understand.
I appreciate that!
