The MISTAKE Every New Writer Makes

I don't even remember if I talk about Chainsawman in this video lmao. All I know is that it's a good example of the thesis because Denji's backstory isn't really ever fully established nor does it necessarily need to be for us to enjoy the show. Sure, we've got his origin and how he came to be Chainsawman, but during that origin we see how it sets up his character and his driving motivation. Ev...

Let's Talk About Mary Sues

Mary Sues are often a good shorthand for telling us the exact way a character has been poorly written. However, often times it seems as though there is a double standard when it comes to female characters in media. Our perception of something is not always reality, and sometimes it can be our own internal biases which lead us to believe in something which is not real. Royal Road Referral Link: ...

Kaara Tibur is currently 12 years old in the story, but with her big brain and some prep time she could definitely no-diff both of them at once without even trying. By my calculations based on a cherrypicked example from my book, Kaara Tibur can move at five times the speed of light, which is way faster than anything in t...

How Generalists DESTROY Specialists

The old addage goes "Jack of All Trades, Master of None", but many don't know the second half which is "Better than a master of one." The point of this video is basically to purposely have what I would consider a 'bad' beginning to the video, some useful advice, and then a 'bad' ending. Why you SUCK at writing: Female characters
Thank you I'm currently making a male character, so far He's coming along well, but I want to add more depth to him This helps a lot
The title is a bit rude lol
Thank you so much for this video, I am a woman that loves drawing/writing about men. I want to portray men's problems and emotions as realistically as i can. This fixation about writing male characters came after years of being manipulated by men, because even tho those men hurt me, after deep thinking I could see the humanity in their actions and their desperation, their sadness. Men's mental health is a very important topic to me personally. I am sad by all the hatered against men in today's world.
To be fair, some of it IS deserved. Some men need to learn how to just nut up and deal with their problems instead of blaming everyone else except themselves. Some guys are so stuck in their own heads and their own problems they just make it everyone else's problem. But of course, the same can be said for women too.
Random Tyler1 clip never gets old
Your most important element of a male character should be his name. I am writing a detective cat. He is male. Describe the story - line first. Outline it. Describe the main characters. Limit them to 12. Describe each main character´s central passions and interests. Put yourself into their shoes. Your next decision is to decide what makes them stand out. The name should come up quickly in your mind, and should be easily spellable. Write a bunch of male characters and female characters, then contrast them with each other. Contrast them with characters from films or TV shows you have seen, poetry and books you have read. Do like Stephen King: ask yourself what if X is scary, and move from that point. The guys who wrote the Bible asked themselves the question what if angels were scary. You follow the same path, the same route and you decide if religion needs to be involved or not. Now you have an infinite supply of ideas for male characters. To be really efficient at writing male characters, you need psychiatry.
aha, you have won and I fell for the obvious clickbait of sukuna being on the left side on the thumbnail. I have to watch now
Finally a dude with a brain put Boruto on the thumbnail.
Damn, with that type chart the Fire-type is still the strongest type.
I think one major reason for the supposed double standard, is that Hollywood as a whole flooded the marketed with so many female led shows which turned out to be bad. And one of their method, is to twist beloved characters or series to fit someone elses world view. i agree your solution how to handle mary sue like anakin skywalker
1:49 Why’d I immediately think of Denji😭🤚
At first when watching this video I was rather apprehensive, what could I be doing differently when writing men from women and why wouldn’t I write them the same? Then I realized im a massive hypocrite and that gender affects men equally as it does woman; with their own set of “rules” that society has given them and internalized. Seeing the world from an entirely different perspective is like writing 101 and I’d be no different from a man who refuses to write woman if I couldn’t recognize that. The line “woman would rather be alone in the woods with a bare than a man, and its mirror: men would rather be emotionally vulnerable with a tree than a woman” stood out to me so much and at that point I realized I might know less than I thought I did. This video had me hooked! Your examples and lessons struck a chord with me and I want to use what I learned to write people that feel real, to learn these rules and how they affect their respective genders and then break them apart into tiny pieces to make art so colourful it hurts. Now all I have to do is actually start writing… Im getting to it!
Massive W
I mean there are great woman writers who write male characters like hoshino for example the creator of d gray man Allen Walker to be more specific
To me I think a good way to do a protagonist is to make em have issues or have mental issues to make them have development because instant noodles isn't good as much as fresh noodles.
I heard something early on that stuck with me "Specialization is for insects."
Is “Goku being a Sayain” a backstory or a plot device used to give him imposter syndrome by casting doubt on all his accomplishments? Cause, if being sayian made him strong, why could he surpass Vegeta who comes from better breeding stock?
As a massive comic fan due to nostalgia and who is also as of right now expanding his view on manga by reading more, I have to say that there is no real definitive answer here. Both are just endless potential for enjoyable stories we can read, and it doesn't matter which you prefer or which you say is better cause your opinion means nothing. Think about it in the grand scheme of things, these are just works for us to enjoy and they are both capable of the same stuff. There's no real specialty to them other than the fact that they come from different countries cause the only thing that matters when it comes to which is better is the author of the story itself. Some great examples of absolute great works of fiction from the West (imo) would be comics such as Watchmen, The Question (1987 Dennis O' Neil Run), The Walking Dead, and All Star Superman. Unfortunately, when it comes to manga I can't say much when it comes to examples cause as I said earlier, I'm still expanding my view on it but as of right now one I really like would be Tokyo Ghoul (only on Chapter 49 though so please don't spoil it). Another thing to consider (which is my main problem with people saying Manga is better) is conclusions and expansive universes cause one of the reasons why people say Manga is better is because they actually have an ending and aren't something you need a hundred years of comic history to understand. Yet if they knew anything about Comics aside from just Marvel and DC they would know that it's not the case at all. I mentioned some examples of this earlier like the Walking dead and Watchmen, both are straight read through stories where you don't need context to understand them, and they have a conclusion to their stories as well. Another thing is that some comic runs don't require context to understand them as well, my main example of this would be the O' Neil comic run of The Question I mentioned earlier (which also happens to be my favorite comic run of all time). Sure, the conclusion to it may not be satisfactory but the plot and the character are set up in just the first two issues and the rest is just his journey afterward with no context required. Anyways, I just want to thank you for reading and listening to me rant about Comics and Manga for a bit and again I just want to make sure this very clear I am not saying Comics nor Manga are better and it's best to enjoy and appreciate them for what they are.
3:05 I mean, butterflies have patterns on their wings, Assassin beetles use the skin even if not as a disguise usually. Monkeys would probably do it just to taunt you, "Ha! I killed your friend and am wearing their skin, what are you going to do about it?"
Dude. Idk if you still read the comment section on this older video but please, PLEASE, read World Trigger. In my humble opinion, it has the best power system I've read. That probably doesnt mean much but you have to read it because... 1. The power system legitimately can't be overstepped. You cant gain much more power than what you're given at birth. And... 2. The battles are logical and tactical. The weakest power user can take out the one with the most power just because of excellent planning. It's still progressing so maybe it may do some classic shonen things but, with the way the author writes it and the themes of the story, I don't see that happening at all.
Heyyyy...i came from nowhere or something and i just waaana say... what if we switched the term "race" with "species"? cus most of the time "race" in humans. are about superficial characteristics, but some fantasy "races" have some BIG Biological differences, thus i believe the usage of the term "species" is moreso fitting. i am not exactly mad for it being used to refer to things like that, it's just a thing i think could be in the mind despite this not being at all the topic of this video... i just think it MIGHT be helpful.
Another issue: when men like women there are reasons - which especially in romance seem to be ignored, which makes them pretty bland for other men.
Time to watch and see if I’ve made any mistakes with my male characters (I have a majority male friend group as a woman)
Seems I’m good!
L Boruto Clickbait
me when monkey has balls
Im a content creator and because I mostly write romance I really needed this video. Recently I wrote a chapter where my main male character was dumped by his girl. He understood why she dumped him but because of all the stress he went through he really needed her support. And then when she left he started to cry. I felt like its a human emotion but I dont want my readers to think oh, he's weak. Most women want men to be emotional but once they are women tend to think it as weakness. Am I wrong?
I guess it pretty much depends on a few things. Most dudes don't really cry over stuff like that. It's usually laying in bed, not shaving, constantly thinking of what you could've done different, and regretting. Some dudes will drink, others will go to the gym more often or play video games. Usually to take their mind off of it. Not saying men don't cry. Mostly that it's not the first or most common option men pick. For me personally, if I know I fucked up in a relationship, i'm more inclined to start working on myself to feel better. The only time I'd cry over a lost relationship is if it's a tragic loss where I could not have done anything. Like getting cheated on or my partner dying.
Why is Sukuna on the left in the thumbnail? He isn’t badly written at all.
This is legit stuff
Modern Media (especially Disney) seriously needs to learn from this. Like seriously, while's it's cool we get more female protagonists than ever, it always irked me how a lot of films, and even some anime lifted their female chars up while putting down their males as the butts of jokes and/or cartoonishly evil antagonists. Like it would be great to have more stories with prominent women, without the men being presented as inferior in some way, much how it is also greatto see more media where the women arent just objectified or dismissed entirely.
Me and my doppelganger would be homie
Perfectly written and spoken piece bro… really level headed take
umm, cool-video & amazing-analysis, but i wanna to asks you something a bit off-topic here, can you please talk about the storytelling of Five Nights at Freddy's?, and rather if it easy or near-impossible to understands it,
Why pray tell is Boruto in the "bad" section of the thumbnail?
24:00 i mean, if you think about it, women do the same, in our society when women are little girls, they tend to look up to and be inspired by princess, being able to weild magic, have their own space in the world, in shoujo the theme of magical girls is so popular for a reason, maybe its just that well, society tends to put focus on your gender, and when you are little you need to look up to things that you as a child see as "for boys" "for girls" and these discriptions tend to atach until we are old,and im sorry if i put lots of comments, i just loved your videos and wanted to put different perspectives
21:00 in reality this also aplies to women in a sense that even in mythology, mythological gods or creatures of various genders tend to be the embodiment of an idea or concept, but i like pretty pretty much how you said it at the end, it is less about masculinity and feminity, is more about their core concept
I mean, driven for desire is also a woman trait, i mean in budhism a crucial aspect is that all humans are driven by desire, molded by it
16:20 Thats a HUMAN trait, most woman act like they have a reason, but in reality we are in the same boat of being driven by bad thought reasons or not really motivated at all
14:10… i think that aspect of gojos character being distant is not really related to being male, more so of he being the strongest, gojo is alone because for the others he isnt a person, he is a weapon, a tool, a monster, an idol, he adopted that aspect, and i believe if he was female it will be pretty similar since women in power through history acted similarly
11:00… i dont know dude in my highschool it was mostly the men that iniatiated rumors or attacked others verbally, knowing that well fighting is not an option so words are more viable
10:13 i also wish that, im a guy and i dont know if i have a problem or illnes but, sometimes i just need to stop and talk to my friends or loved ones, if i dont it feels, empty
My other friends also have this Dw about it he’s just talking about generalizations otherwise not much to talk about
Why is sukuna on the left
I tend to see that most of the time, people over fixates in men and women differences and create steryotipes instead of characters, you need to understand that they are their own people, because if they are all similar its just boring, we have similarities but theres lot of fifferent views and people
'So I'm a Spider So What?' (Light novel series, manga adaptation, and anime adaptation) is good enough to get me to read the 16 book long light novel series
I personally mostly write characters based on motivations, fears, how they cope and deal with situations and then just randomly attach genders to them, so this added a new perspective and actually helped, thank you!
Honestly, im 9 minutes in and I find myself disagreeing with your assessment of specialists. You almost make it seem like they can't be good at anything outside of their specialty, which is kinda absurd. I can specialize in a specific sport, but also athletic enough to play other sports competently. Then if they are good at something outside of their specialty, they automatically become generalists? Eh. Yeah, your interpretation leaves more to be desired.
Exactly, because the only true specialists in life are the machines and tools we make. An athlete in a specific sport is generally athletic, but they will find themselves unhappy in old age if they do not find other things to become proficient in. For every person who makes it to proffessional leagues there is a thousand who do not. And for those who run through their career having known nothing else, they often describe their retirement as deeply depressing because their sport was everything they knew how to do. So instead of trying to force yourself and others into being a specialist- a road of life which is shown to be very unfulfilling for human beings- acknowledge we are all generalists to one degree or another because the greatest strength of humanity is how varied, adaptive, and versatile we can be.
@ScritRighter That's not what I'm saying. We just fundamentally disgaree. A specialist doesn't exist in a vacuum. It's possible to develop a special skill to the exclusion of anything or everything else. Even an athlete who specializes in a very specific niche of a sport has to understand, be able to implement and potentially be proficient in other aspects of the sport. This lateral proficiency does not then make them a generalist, because they still specialize and perform activity either well above their capacity for other activities or at such a level that it is beyond the ability of most people. I'd even go so far to say regarding your 80/20 split, that it is a further reinforcement of someone being so highly specialized in a skill that they extrapolate that understanding and ability to other areas or activities. It demonstrates an understanding so specific so that it become their baseline for everything. A generalist very rarely if ever gets to such a level of mastery and if they do, it's generally balanced through their aptitudes for such things. Does that make more sense about what I'm trying to say?
@@DemonEyesKyo The simple fact of the matter is that someone is only ever considered a specialist when their specific set of skills fit into one niche task. A person who is generally good at music, programming, art, and writing is a generalist until a game dev becomes a profession. Tell me, did anything change about that person or their capabilities, or was it the job/task we value which changed? Specialists are often not the best in the world at what they do. For most purposes the specialist is solely useful on their fringe topics where they are required. In our workplace, it is often the specialists who are replaced once the task they specialize in can be done by a specialized tool. And once again, the only true specialists in our society are the tools and computer programs we use to perform those tasks. Human beings can become specialists too, but it often leaves them vulnerable to obsolescence when that task is no longer valuable. And when a task is valuable, we arbitrarily determine that a person's list of generalized skills is actually specialization... even though nothing has changed about that skillset.
22:00 nah not my OC he’s built different he will freeze the fire, that’s how cool he is 😎
Female writer here. I just wanted to say YOU’RE A LIFE SAVERRRR. I’ve been struggling so much with writing any male characters that I find myself constantly writing bland and stereotypical dudes. It bugs me so much because I know how it feels to read somthing and have the unpleasant experience to witness the stereotypes in action. My most hated trope is the damsel in distress, people portraying a woman as this fragile flower just there for aesthetic purposes only. So when I catch myself writing men in a similar way it makes me feel like shit. And since I’m NOT a man, I didn’t know what I was doing wrong. Thank you so much for this video 😭🙏🏾
Stay away from steriotypes or if you try to use one, understand whats the key point that makes that steriotype atractive
30:08 "having to justify Magic’s role in the story to your audience". I don't like killing the darlings I created as a child, so I feel like the only way I can keep all of them is by inventing a backstory that explains why they exist.
