RED CLAY TRAVELER
США
Добавлен 1 июл 2021
Hey Y'all, here at Red Clay Traveler you will see videos of my camping and exploring trips along with videos about my projects and many other hobbies. I love the outdoors and I go camping as often as possible. I also have a passion for history and you may hear me tell a story or two from time to time. I also have a passion for Willys Jeeps of all kinds, so the channel will mainly be about different Jeeps I am working on or building. I want this to be a fun and hopefully educational experience for all involved. I may occasionally review products that I am using while out on a trip or working on my old truck, but this is not a product review channel. I hope you enjoy and if you like what you see, please consider subscribing. Thanks, Dean

I read several accounts of Medal Of Honor recipients and share their heroic stories of sacrifice. This is what Memorial Day is for, to remember the ones who gave the one life they had for our country and for their fel...

Dauntless, Willys, and Traveler Updates
15:00 Just bought a (new) friend's stock of parts. My wallet hates me but it is such a good feeling to have so many spares. There are no words for it.
I just did an order for 1200 dollars on t150 parts but they didnt show much on that transmission. I do have more stuff soon that is more up their alley. Not too long ago parts on t 150 were everywhere. I soon noticed not so today.
They are getting better all the time on inventory but you are right, some things they just don’t have right now
Another good thing about a jeep no need to jack up the vehicle to change oil .
Exactly! It makes it easier on big boys like me. lol
On those valve covers I always permatex to the cover and not the head. Then they always come loose and leak. Tightened
I goofed. Tightened current one down a little excessive and still seems to leak. Thinking about permatex to the head also.
I did this job a couple months ago and everything seems fine. No leaks that I see. I did find one valve that was a touch loose but it doesn’t make noise so I left it alone for now
Picked up my first California Jeep 6 cyl yesterday. It has a Holley reman Carter yf carb. Didn't know Holley did that. Put a microguard on my mom's blazer. All they had that day. Normally on my jeeps and welders I use fram. A lot of people frett filters but I say they aren't doing anything anyway. Only two I've seen a problem with are a Baldwin and an AC Delco. They both fell apart internally. Element was rattling severely end to end.
Right on. I try to use any filter other than fram, I have heard to many stories. But any filter is going to have problems from time to time
I like ugly, so 3b is what I would build. But I have a wagon so 3b is just a dream.
I like 3bs as well. Maybe I can find a tub one day. lol
I believe it's important before buying or selling anything that I inform myself a lot before engaging in the actual sales/purchase process. I think that's how I came across you, if I'm not mistaken, while I was researching a local truck. Knowing that I know what I need to in order to make an educated purchase/sale, I don't engage with the other parties too much to the point where it gets personal. The way I see it they have something I want, either to buy or I want their money, so I don't get into arguments with them about anything. If I'm trying to make a purchase and they're way high, well I know they aren't going to sell whatever it is, so I give them an honest assessment of what it's worth and tell them I hope they get what they want, but if they find they can't sell it it and they do some research, they might see I'm giving them a good offer. The two most important things I can suggest to someone looking to make a purchase is, aside from knowing what it is they're looking at and what things are worth, is to be ready to make the purchase immediately (you have the money and any permission you might need to buy it already) as once the process starts it moves fast. Second is to not want it more than the person selling it, you have to be able to walk away no harm done. Something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it at a price someone else is willing to part with it. Seems simple but when people get involved, nothing is simple.
I agree completely my friend! Especially the part about be ready to buy it immediately. Thank you as always for your comment.
That must be where the saying for the Post office comes from “rain sleet or snow”🤣🤣😂🤪
Very solid point! lol Clearly it makes more sense if your mail Jeep doesn’t have a windshield. lol
It's getting there! If you're looking for opinions about the luggage rack, I think if you put something on a vehicle that serves a function that is actually used, then it's appropriate, and thus looks exactly the way it's supposed to look. I see a lot of stuff tacked onto trucks that you know are never actually going to be used, those things look kind of "poser" if you know what I mean. If you're going to carry stuff on it, then just say "nice rack" and move on with your life!
That is a pretty good point of view
The Red Clay Traveler has a way of capturing the frustration we all seem to encounter when wading into the world of online buying and selling. I've become resigned to the fact that a good 30-40 percent of online buyers or sellers are huffing large amounts of aluminum spray paint just prior to hopping online or texting. Keep the content rolling, its high entertainment!
Thanks buddy! Sometimes I just have to share my grievances. lol
Later rambling man happy travels to you.
Thanks buddy. Safe travels to you and yours as well
I found/bought my 1945 willys MB from a marine in 2014, (in North Carolina) in running and driving condition... $4k
Exactly. I have seen several nice mb’s and gpw’s in Texas lately for around that price range.
@@redclaytraveler1949 😀 oddly enough, the marine purchased it from some dude in Texas a few years earlier.
Haha that’s awesome! I’m no I’m going to end up driving to Texas one of these days for one. Arkansas also has a lot of nice Jeeps.
@@redclaytraveler1949 I bought my 1985 CJ7 with 258/6 last year in beaverdam virginia for $3500.
I've been all over the southeast looking for a willys wagon, I've come across the same nonsense. Marketplace should make these take an IQ test. I saw pictures of a restoration
Wagons are tough to find in good shape. I haven’t found one yet that I was willing to pull the trigger on. I want one though. lol
Great episode. I'm rootin fer ya!
Thanks buddy
Looks right. No keyway slot in middle hole with a small hole off to the side for the pin sticking out from cam. Not sure if mine has the bearing. Still in the box and not near it now. The cloyes doesnt come with bearing. At least the last one didnt. Interesting.
The box says to use bearing when applicable. So I don’t know. lol
@@redclaytraveler1949 yeah all we have to do is figure it out 😆 the spacing between gear face and cam or gear to block face will enter into it. May have to make a call to australia to check. No joke. I will check the one I have but that doesn't say it is machined the same or if it even came with bearing. If you call please tell me what they say. My guess is to delete but then why put it in the box?
I don’t know either. lol I think it might apply to the other straight 6s but I don’t know. I’m waiting on this project for a bit longer lol
@@redclaytraveler1949 not the other AMC sixes they are the same. I would call them. I will see if I can come up with any facts but I doubt it. Cloyes probably can't help as it's not there unit.
I don’t know, I haven’t been around any other AMC sixes. I don’t know what the bearing situation is, my Dauntless didn’t have a bearing when I did its chain. As usual it would appear I am over my head. lol I did read that you sometimes have to clearance one sprocket for an oil passage or something like that. I’m not with the chain or I would check. The instructions seem straightforward and nothing strange, but I don’t know
The openings and closings of Red Clay Traveler videos are priceless.
Thank you lol
Woooo! Bring it on! Keep pluggin along, we're almost there. Hi Miss Brittany, hope you're well. See ya in the next one. I'm rootin fer ya!!!
I’m getting excited! We do have a clutch issue though and it looks like we are going to have to put it back out and figure out why the clutch isn’t releasing
Locating the motor and trans is getting a lot done on that project.
It is but sadly we are going to have to remove it and figure out what is going on with the clutch. Something isn’t right
The rack looks like a Smittybilt 76711. Thanks for explaining the modifications likely to be needed for a CJ installation!
Yes sir! I think is looks pretty good and it should serve my needs well
buy a tub kit
I have considered it but the horror stories about them not fitting have always kept me away
I like the CJ5's roll cage and must have missed the video where you installed it. Manufacturer?
Actually didn’t film the installment. I didn’t plan on it going so smoothly. It is a smittybilt
I just picked up another 10% yesterday on my order from KW using your discount code....thanks!
Awesome! Thank you!
I'm glad to see you getting some stuff done, I know filming adds double or more time to doing the work. I had to give up on mechanical pumps for my cj7 and put in an electric one. I prefer mechanical ones, but I just kept replacing them and they kept letting me down and I just don't trust the parts you can get anymore. Electric ones work great, but when they quit they just kinda quit and leave you stranded, which is also not great. I'll just carry a cheapo electric if my Facet pump dies to get me home I guess.
I hear you. I have recently heard of a different supplier. I don’t remember the name right now but supposedly the pumps are good.
👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Thanks buddy
Hey Red Clay Traveler, good ta see ya, son. Thanks for the update. It's always to have a plan, it's not a set plan but it's still a plan. I'll be followin and as always... I'm rootin fer ya!
Thanks buddy! I like to plan but the plan is flexible. lol
@@redclaytraveler1949 exactly...
Red Clay Traveler has himself a Minnesota winter style wood pile in the yard, and I'm jealous.
lol that’s my brothers affair. He likes splitting wood
@@redclaytraveler1949 I declare your brother to be an honorary Minnesota wood hoarder.
Haha I will certainly tell him! I appreciate your comments. Maybe if I remember, I’ll show the wood pile up close
Rollmaster timing chain? If so physically make sure its the right one. A few years ago they shipped out a bunch of v8 units in 6 cyl boxes. They are very different.
I haven’t opened it yet. The box is right but I will verify it soon
Is the v8 longer?
@@redclaytraveler1949 the v8 has a large hole and keyway for the cam gear and the 6cyl is a smaller hole next to a small hole for a pin. The center hole is for a single bolt going in to cam. The factory book has a good picture of each. The keyway is only on the v8.
Thank you for the info. I’ll check it out when I’m back at the shop.
@@redclaytraveler1949 yeah. When it happened to me they didn't say anything to anybody. The time to find out is not when it's tore down and you open the box. Surprise. They could have notified dealers that bought 6 cyl units. They knew they goofed.
People complaining ? Im not getting much done eigther. For me its called getting old. For you i think its called got a job.
I get some complaints, but mainly just random hate comments. Bad comments are really quite rare honestly. But I do feel guilty for not getting more done with the Jeeps, not just for the channel, but for myself. The job is a lot of it, but I have a lot of other stuff happening as well. Regardless I am getting more done and progress is being made in the right direction.
@@redclaytraveler1949I forgot a couple of things as usual. On the chain don't forget to pre soak it before install. I like motor oil and stp 50. 50 mix. On your axle leak I couldn't see where it's coming from but you don't have to pull the knuckle to remove axle. Large hole it slides right through. Hopefully not leaking at diff side seals. Wheel bearing seal would be a lot easier.
That makes sense on the seal. I would guess it is the outside seal. Yes I will soak this chain, I forgot to when I did the dauntless lol
If it was leaking on diff side would I see it at the knuckle side? Wouldn’t it be trapped at that seal?
@@redclaytraveler1949 if at diff it would be coming out of axle tube where u joint meets tube. That's part of what I couldn't see. There is no seal in the tube at the u joint. Only inside diff. So hopefully wheel bearing seal ? There is a small seal for the spindle needle bearing and a forsheda v ring seal for the axle shaft. Be gentle and clean with alcohol and generally can use over. Along with needle bearing. If not rusty clean and re use. New wheel bearing seals for sure. They changed to a dual lip seal so the number in my head for 40 years isn't right. I have new number back at home. Couple days before I get back there.
Nice plug, brother. As I understand it, they got most anything a guy could need. Keep up the good work. I'm rootin fer ya!
Thanks buddy! They carry more for the Willys than for the later cj5s but I have had a lot of luck with them for years.
Im going to need them soon. I bet your cooking down there.
It’s rough buddy!
Carl Walck and I have been pals over 45 years. He had the best parts and KW and he made a great Partership. Carl still has buildings full of used parts KW did not want so there's still a connection for used. We had a mutual pal in Lancaster who made all the sheet metal parts and that also continues under KW. That all said I'd prefer Willys Civilian jeep only as military has many other suppliers and followers, but few videos are out there installing Willys parts. I have restored 24 Willys. You and I spoke about your truck, but I put everything on hold until I finish my 65 GTO. Just consider doing that. I see a lot of requests online about carbs, points and condenser vs electronic (Which I always throw away ) simple tune ups as new young owners have no idea. Tkx and good luck Jim F
That’s really cool. I like old style ignition systems and I enjoy the updated electronic as well. It really depends on the vehicle for me and how it runs with its components when I get it. My cj5 has an updated distributor and it’s great, far better than the factory, but my L head ran perfectly with its original distributor. The only thing I always change is the 6 volt generator and convert to 12volt.
Perfect fit!
Thanks!
Watching your head dissappear under the fender made me want to read the comments first before I finished the video😂 where are your jackstands young man? Check your ground if you haven't on the rear light situation I had sketchy connections on mine and a little sanding and cleaning cured the problems. I had to laugh at the heat factor because I have so many fans going in my shop at work I cant hear a thing. There's no way I could shoot a video. Our humidity in Omaha in summer is THICK cant use a swamp cooler because it just makes everything more wet. Thanks for the vids R.C.T.
lol I know! I wasn’t trying to get all yall riled up over the jack stands. lol I will make an effort to remember to use them next time. I put some different lights on yesterday and so far I think they work better and look better, even if they are just trailer lights. lol
same on my 80. rides pretty harsh. haven't decided if im going to go replacement stock or 2.5" lift parts. i also need to do some measurements for shocks on the 83 with full width soa.
2.5 looks pretty usually. Either way the ride will improve. lol
You should have Jack stand under there Red Clay Traveler
I know, I am not the best about using jack stands. I will try to remember next time.
I think I need to do that to mine soon! For what it's worth, according to the 1981 Jeep shop manual, the top nut is set to 35 foot pounds during the service and when rechecked is fine between 25-40 lbs. The bottom nut is set to 45 lbs initially and rechecked between 35-50 lbs. I think the way you did it got it someplace in that range.
I appreciate it buddy! I couldn’t find it quick when I looked. I think it will be fine and I just have to remember to check it. lol
Yeah, I got me some REDCLAY10 discount on my last K/W order. ALLLLLLLLL RIIIIIIIIGHT!

@@redclaytraveler1949I had some very weird taillight problems mixed with flashers and turn signals. The flasher unit in the fuse block was going nuts. New one didn't last so got a second one from different supply and it has done well.
It’s always fun. lol I need some new tail lights and I’m hoping that might help some but I know my harness needs help.
I've been popping in now and then to check out this channel, and each time I'm struck about how smart this dude really is. He plays a hillbilly at times on this channel, but I can see through his act.
I appreciate your kind words, but my correction would be that I’m not playing anything. I am a southern man, some would say hillbilly, but I am also well read and educated. Once upon a time things like that were not so unbelievable. I appreciate your comment buddy, I am glad you enjoy the channel!

Cool lil inventory update. Thanks. Keep Jeepin. I'm rootin fer ya!

Mentioned this before but at 150 000 the top gear sluffed off metal and went everywhere in my engine. That was on a stock style all metal unit. Not nylon coated. As with the v6 i would go with a double roller. Assumed you have been busy lately. Hope the new job is good.
Yeah the job is going great! I was planning on going to a double roller for sure. My engine is probably approaching 150,000 so I figured it’s a good time to do it.
@@redclaytraveler1949 if it has the factory nylon coated you shouldn't have any metal but will be really loose. Let's hope for no metal flakes.
