    My condolences to the next of kin! While we still can only speculate about the actual cause, I also want to point out the poor infrastructure. There were hard obstacles (a wall) in the overrun area, and the runway didn't seem to have EMAS, which could have stopped the aircraft safely. Not the cause of the accident, but the airport infrastructure will be the main reason why the outcome was so bad.

    The north end of the airfield is visible from Street View on the Cheongun-ro frontage road. If they landed 01 [edit: they didn't, they landed 19] whatever berm and aggregate are there measure 500ft from the threshold (on the 19 end, via gmaps) and the perimeter wall another 500ft after that. But the crew must have decided the runway was long enough for the belly landing, or they would have been better off in the water.

    • @Dafnessific

      Though with the mountains and terminals behind the plane in the video, they must have landed 19 and the water we're seeing is the lagoon to the east of the runway rather than the shore to the west. In that direction, you can see the antennae plainly, and the perimeter wall is just a little further.

    ya this is rough, its like lets see how much more aviation accidents we can have before the end of the year. So to me looks like something took out all of their hydraulics.. no flaps, no landing gear, and no time to manual drop the gear so must have been catastrophic whatever happened with little time to do anything .. so high speed landing, reversers were out tho, what system deploys that? The really tragic thing is that the gear up landing looked great so you know they were fighting all the way to the end!! But then it just veers off the runway and..we see what happened. If two people lived thats a miracle in itself.

    737 has cable activated alternate gear extension. Literally FO reaches back, opens a flap in the floor, and pulls hard on three red handles. Uplocks release and gravity pulls those heavy gear down. Also the hydraulic brakes have an accumulator that gives you at least one good brake application even in a full failure of all hydraulic systems AND loss of all fluid. Seems like some sort of pilot error to come in with no gear and so hot. And there's a procedure for belly landing that does not include touching down so late. So many questions.

  • @JM87Fly
    @JM87Fly 7 часов назад

    This one is a bit of a head-scratcher. Pure speculation follows: Official reports say bird strike leading to landing gear issues. It is theoretically possible for a bird strike to cause gear difficulties in the B737, but usually shouldn’t affect extension. So the landing gear is normally operated by hydraulic system A. System A is pressurised by the no 1 engine driven hydraulic pump and a corresponding electric pump. Likewise system B is powered by engine 2 and another electrical pump. The reservoir for system A is located in the landing gear well on the centreline of the aircraft. The Hyd B reservoir is on the right hand side. It is theoretically possible that a bird or birds entered the gear well during departure and caused sufficient damage to the system A reservoir or lines that the gear could be retracted with what pressure remained, but it leaked out over time until there was insufficient pressure to extend the gear later in flight. If system B was in damaged there would be sufficient pressure to operate fight controls, flaps and some of the flight spoilers so the aircraft would remain controllable in the normal way without going to manual reversion. An alternative theory might be a tire blowout on takeoff, with tire chunks being shed into the wheel well during retraction and causing the damage I’ve described. Either way, I’m a bit puzzled by the ensuing gear up landing. The 737 has a manual, gravity freefall gear extension capability. There are three cables in the floor of the fight deck which, when pulled as if starting a lawnmower, release the uplocks and allow the gear to fall into place. Normally the gear handle is positioned DOWN prior to enacting this mechanism, but even if the lever were stuck in the UP or OFF position, there is a checklist for this, and it’s a pretty simple trigger mechanism that allows movement of the gear lever into the required position. I can’t immediately think of a circumstance in which you would choose to land gear up like that. And from my understanding of the B737 hydraulic system, it should in theory be quite rare to be in a situation where both the primary and alternate gear extension mechanisms are inoperative. Multiple system failures are always a possibility and the outcome of the investigation will be one to watch closely. RIP to all who were lost in this accident. Hopefully the death toll doesn’t rise any further.

    • @BuffaloWarrior7
      @BuffaloWarrior7 6 часов назад

      @@JM87Fly Thank you for the insight! I looked over the hydraulic schematic as a layman to try and understand how this could possibly happen. And to me it would only almost make sense if it was a dual engine failure on final but before they got the gear flaps down. I came across something saying if the hydraulics are inop, it takes 2 minutes to lower the flaps. Would that mean with no reservoir pressure? Just the electric pumps? I'm hoping this is a crazy once in a trillion scenario and not pilot error or an act of terrorism. RIP.

    • @JM87Fly
      @JM87Fly 4 часа назад

      @ a dual engine failure wouldn’t immediately and completely knock out hyds, as you still have the electric pumps, though it’s a reasonable inference. More importantly, dual engine failure is almost totally unheard of. If I remember rightly the CFM-56 family experiences a failure about once every million flight hours. The odds of that happening to both engines on a single airframe are as near as makes no difference to zero. I am seeing some reports of bird strike on approach, so it is possible this was a miracle on the Hudson type event I suppose…far too many unknown variables to do anything but wildly speculate at this early stage. You’re right about the alternate flap system. It uses electric motors to extend the LE devices and TE flaps, and it takes about 2-3 minutes to get to flap 15. As an unrelated aside, whilst the trailing edge flaps can be extended or retracted using the alternate system, leading edge devices cannot be retracted once extended. The whole thing is quite strange to me. Unless something was physically preventing the gear from extending, I’m not sure why you wouldn’t manually extend them. But I’m not enough of a technical expert to think of every possible failure scenario this crew might have encountered. I’m sure they did everything they could under the circumstances. I’m hearing only two survivors now. I truly hope that number doesn’t change again.

  • @BuffaloWarrior7
    @BuffaloWarrior7 8 часов назад

    No gear, flaps, or spoilers what kind of bird strike could cause complete failures of 3 separate systems. Looking over the hydraulic diagram it looks like system A is the only system that can drop the gear. System B handles the flaps and slats with a PTU that could use power from System A. I may be reading the diagram wrong. I'm absolutely not an A&P/Pilot. But take a look at it. Boeing manual: "If the gear fails to extend properly or hydraulic system A is lost, the gear can be manually extended by pulling the manual gear extension handles, located in the flight deck. This should be done in accordance with the QRH procedure."

      perhaps dual engine failure and had to get her down? even if thats the case you should know if youre too fast and put it in a field or the water.

    • @BuffaloWarrior7
      @BuffaloWarrior7 6 часов назад

      @evanm6739 at least pull the emergency gear handle. The 737 doesn't have a RAT but the APU can power both systems with Electric Motor Driven Pump. If the APU is off and you're on final and experience a dual engine failure and the engines windmilling doesn't provide any hydraulic pressure. The batteries and hydraulic reservoir should still be able to control the flaps/slat. The electric pump should turn on automatically. Edit also found this: If the hydraulic system is inoperative flaps are limited to flaps 15 and takes approximately 2 minutes to extend. Edit: again I'm not an A&P I'm just reading and doing my best to interpret Boeings manual. Which does list out everything about these systems.

    EDIT: The hydraulics on the 737 turns out to be *vastly* different so my following comment turns out to be just a nothingburger. Please ignore my comment. I'm only leaving it up for posterity. ---- Polish LOT Airlines Flight 16, a Boeing 767, successfully crash landed in 2011 after their central hydraulic system failed from a worn hose. That hydraulic system controls both the flaps and landing gear. They could extend them with a backup alternate electrical controls on the instrument panel, but unfortunately for that flight an unrelated electrical fault prevented them from extending the gear. At least they had time to troubleshoot and look through the manual. In this case, with flaps and gear retracted, my earliest guess is that the bird strike led to a failure in the central hydraulic system during their go around. And either they didn't have time to use the alternate electrical flaps and gear, or the engine failure also led to the power loss of those systems.

    • @evanm6739
      @evanm6739 7 часов назад

      It specifically says to land flaps 40 VREF with gear stuck up. Even if the flaps are stuck up you have to land Flaps 40 VREF. He should have had plenty of time to use the alternate flaps extension unless it was a total electrical failure. Perhaps he couldn't see his airspeed which I highly doubt. There's no reason why he couldnt just bleed off the airspeed or just go around and shoot the approach again. It says in the QRH to burn off fuel but youre supposed to save enough for a go around.

    You are correct, Munden, about using immediate rudder only and no aileron to bring the down wing back up. Actually walking the rudder pedals dynamically and proactively to bracket the centerline between our legs will have us already moving and ahead of the airplane. Aileron, steering wheel reactive movement with adverse yaw, will exasperate the rolling movement. Down aileron, at slow airspeed, drags that wing back worse than at high airspeed. This is a civilian Huey. Army regs required us to operate in different airspace as much as practicable to deconflict ourselves at uncontrolled airports. Notice how tower does this at controlled airports. We would have made a steep and slow approach to the grass at a perpendicular to the runway. We never went to parking. More walking but much safer. On my medevac crew of two pilots, crew chief, and medic, every move would be preceeded with nose clear right, nose clear left, tail clear right, tail clear left continuously. David Trujillo, the safest pilot I ever flew with, would not turn and taught by osmosis. He would say, "nose coming left and wait for three clearance calls. Two calls. Some crewman is asleep. We just set there in a hover. "Nose coming left." Two calls. "Nose coming left.". Eventually some crewman wakes up. "Tail clear right."
