I see his point. He thinks every artist should be trying to create something new, something original, which has never been done before. He apparently believes that an artist should care about people buying his or her art. The question I often ask myself - do I care about that? Well, I have to admit I do. Otherwise I will have a bunch of work piling up in my garage, to be thrown in the trash later. This happened to me already, and it makes me wonder - why am I trying to make art? Doing it for myself is fun, because I enjoy seeing what I have done, even though it might not be entirely new or original? But I also care about leaving something behind that someone else will appreciate for a long time, and the only way that is going to happen is if I sell my work to people who can see something they like and are willing to pay for it. Then we get into the discussion about originality and art history, and so on. I don't know if there is an answer to this - you can learn a lot from studying artists from the past, and even copying them. In the process of creating art, if you do it long enough or often enough, you will stumble across something entirely new, something truly original. That is, if you continue to experiment and take risks - otherwise you are just being endlessly repetitive, and that is incredibly boring and definitely NOT fun. So I guess the answer is: keep painting (or whatever) and keep trying to please your own sensibilities, and eventually you will create art that will stand the test of time.

Eastern Europe accent. You chanced upon tough Eastern European style debate & engagement 😂 Late in the night after a few drinks, it might turn into a screaming match with a "you're just a moron" style of conclusion. I would have pulled out my phone, turn off the camera & asked him to show me his work to see if I can learn from it 😉😅

To me this guy is confusing genre with your unique style/technique/composition within that genre. He is assuming that impressionism, expressionism or any genre has been completely exhausted. Imagine if someone were to say "Well, jazz music has already been done so you are wasting your time creating new jazz music". It sounds absurd when you hear it this way. Anyone can create their own unique style within the genre that they like and it is perfectly valid.

The beautiful art is always there but what has always impressed upon my spirit is the love you so clearly have for your family. Renoir was also about the family; his success was undeniable then and nowadays in a world where the concept of the family takes a hit, you express to us the joy and importance of it. May your whole family continue to be blessed and may you achieve all of your dreams with your art. I firmly believe that your work will be hailed in time to come and that you will rank with the masters. I have never seen such expressiveness in figures with such minimalistic constructive brushstrokes of colour dabs. Please forgive me in that I wanted to purchase a work of yours a while back but my finances took a hit in the last two years. My goal is to eventually own some of your works. All the best, from David.

We shouldn’t discount what the man was saying simply because it was “not nice.” While it’s certainly fine this guy wants to remain within the confines of what he knows and what has been done better by others, the idea of pushing the boundaries beyond that is critical to evolution. Some people take art very seriously, and don’t just make it a weekend hobby like the painter in the video. On the whole, the old guy is right, but picking on the artist just trying schlep a bit of paint around “and have fun” is probably the old man’s projection rather than true critique of the artist painting. I think the guy painting, and all of us too, should consider what he says as a general thought rather than an attack on his work, but also consider it as it relates to our own creative endeavours. Lastly, I’ll venture to say that the painter was so offended by the old guy’s words because he himself harbours doubts about his work. If he were truly just enjoying the moment, enjoying his style and “having fun” then he would have just brushed it off instead of getting on the defensive and seeking affirmation by others in the park and then later through the comment section of this video. Serious painters give serious thought to their practice and it’s not fair to bring hobbyists into this discourse if enjoyment is their main goal.

Gosh, that's just upsetting. Some people paint for the pure pleasure of it, or to learn something new, not just to do it technically the right way. And, really, obviously, it's subjective.

I mean, the old mans comments only make me want to see him paint more. I just think it would have been even funnier if the old man stopped one of the joggers and told them, "What is the point? You aren't going to go to the olympics? Nike isn't going to sign you up if you do this." I think he just doesn't understand that in the Post-modern age he isn't wasting his time by doing this. He's actually adding back the time that art has lost over the years. And it was Robert Huges who said that. And the old man isn't as smart or correct as Robert Hughes.
