don't tell this guy about Sparhawk. he married a girl at least half his age and hung out with a child goddess....Spar Kelly? or the "christians" and "jews" of that world or the yellow(beige?) dogs in the second series
The first time I saw Tulsi Gabbard all I could think of was Polgara.
ok quick note i just started watching this but had to interject. David Eddings was not exactly inspired by the lord of the rings. but then again....He was in a store and saw a LOTR book on the shelf and basically thought this crap is still for sale and saw it was in its whatever edition. he thought if this was still popular he could write something better and get it published. David Eddings was a scholar of western midieval literature, what was called Romance litererature. brave knights living by a code, courtly love, etc. that is what he based his writing on skipping over the modern fantasy to go to the source.
awesome the video did mention the store incident
Into The Wild is what started my love of reading when I was 11 years old. I hated reading up until I read about that first battle where deputy Redtail unfortunately didn’t get to come home.
Crybaby bs
I feel like the Belgariad holds up better than the Mallorean, the Elenium, and the Tamuli, since Eddings is being a bit more straightforward and the world is slowly revealed to you, whereas the later books are more Eddings rehashing the plot and just have a bunch of characters constantly roasting or bullying each other and it gets old and overly jokey and makes the worldbuilding and actual plot feel unimportant. I agree with a lot of the criticisms of the books, but I also agree that the books are a great gateway to fantasy. It's certainly the case for me. Prior to reading the Belgariad, I'd read The Chronicles of Prydain, the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, and I think maybe a few Mercedes Lackey books in her Velgarth world. After reading The Belgariad, I just couldn't get enough of fantasy novels and it really turned me on to doorstop-sized series like Wheel of Time, A Song of Ice and Fire, Memory, Sorrow and Thorn/Last King of Osten Ard, etc. As for the pretty horrific abuse that Eddings committed (n.b., not "alleged," as he was convicted in a court of law, back in the 70s, no less, when people took child abuse a lot less seriously), I think there are hints of that that pop up in his books. On rereads, I noted that a lot of the characters that I previously liked were sort of assholes. Like, all that stuff about genociding this or that race, casual mentions of beatings and torture, the good guys constantly cutting each other down, etc. I didn't notice it when I was a 10-11 year old kid, I noticed it a lot more as an adult. Oh, and Sparhawk, in his mid-30s (if not older), marrying Ehlana, an 18 year old, is sort of fucked.
The United States did fund the Mujahadeen. We have CHEESE CAVES The government ADMITTED in a court of law that they killed MLK The US government faked vampire attacks in the Phillipines The US government has crushed millions and millions of functional cars, raising the price of a entry level vehicle from $500 to at least $3500 The truth is stranger than fiction
Have you ever heard of the book Lord of Light? I would be interested in your take on that book from the late 60's.
When I was in grade 3 (about 30 years ago) joined a book giveaway, and won! The book was The Black Cauldron. This video reminded me of how much I loved that book, and how much I wanted to finish the entire series. I immediately went on audible and used my one credit to purchase the first two books 8n this 5 book series. Thank you so much for reminding me of that bucket list wish, and of reminding me of some long lost buried memories.
This is a good review but there absolutely is graphic violence. People getting their hearts ripped out of their living bodies is as graphic as it gets. There is definitely a problem with racism and how he wrote women. The Mallorean has added creepiness where *SPOILER* 50 year old Urgit marries 16 (eventually 17) year old Prala.
Id like to see one of these on Fred Saberhagen's The Complete Book of Swords, or Guy Gavriel Kay's Fionivar Tapestry. Those books along with The Mallorean/Elenium/Tamuli were my introduction to fantasy. I experienced them all within the same year.
the supplemental Belgarath The Sorcerer added to the amazing story because you get to see his machinations over the eons that led to the Belgariad.
what? next you gonna tell me there's no rl stine?
oh, geez, don't let f scott fitzgerald hear you say that (that no book better matches its visuals)
idk, still halfway through, literally, dead in the middle of the vile village and lemony keeps saying there'll be no happy ending. would this mysterious stranger neck deep in nefarious situations lie?
I enjoyed watching Redwall, even read read comics. loved it!
I watched this show on opb as a kid, I'm 30 this was an amazing show.
I loved it for its simplicity. I also own all the series on audiobooks
I got the Mallorean as part of 99p book club deal when I turned 18. At the same time i got Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit. Never finished the Hobbit. I got the audio cassettes instead read by Martin Shaw. I put down Lord of the Rings for a year as I was too difficult to read. I read the Mallorean twice that year alongside other easier fantasy novels like David Gemmell and Katharine Kerr and only then did i tackle it again. Without Belgarion not sure I would have picked up Frodo and Sam's story. so for me he and the other Mallorean characters have a special place, alongside Paul Atreides, Gandalf and Rhodry Maelwaedd. I was never really challenged by Herbert's writing style as I was by Tolkien's but objectively, I won't know if that was down to their respective skills or my own reading level by the time I'd read the Mallorean. But with respect to Eddings he was never going to a Herbert or a Tolkien.
Even when I was a kid I thought this series was pretty meh.
I still have my set of books. Such an odd series. Good read.
I still think that the plots and the character were EXTREMELY well done and well-written, even with minor mix-ups when it came to little details.
20:34 - Ever heard of the Rats of NIMH? They deserve a video from you too.
Every Friday we’d go to video stores and I’d always pick out a new goosebumps vhs
This remind me of Tooth and Tail game
Funny how Disney try to avoid Artemis as “Gentleman Thief” when Bad Guys from Dream Works and Lupin III still show that you can make those archetypes for kids.
I completely forgot that I read EVERY damn book in this series 😂
Don’t forget the Dragonlance musical on RUclips “The Last Trial”. Also the Dragonlance world has gotten a revival in the recent D&D source manuals.
Ah yes. Eddings. A positively lifeless author in my opinion. I was reading Melanie Rawn, Tolkien, Weis & Hickman, Gordon R. Dickson, and other authors with better world building, depth of story, and flow of text. Besides, Eddings said in an interview that Tolkien was a hack writer. Eat a d!ck. To me, Eddings was the Robert Jordan of his time, which is to say overrated, unoriginal, and boring. Millions love them but I can figure out why for myself after decades of trying.
I really enjoyed these books.
My intro to fantasy was Tolkien, followed then by Moorcock with the Elric series. When I reread them now Tolkien holds up, Elric has some cringy parts (I still like it but I can see the flaws). Being in my late 20s and early 30s when the Belgarian came out I kind of noticed the flaws right away, I still liked it but it wasn't as good as Tolkien. Same with Shannarra and even Wheel of Time. Note when I say Tolkien I mean LOTR, the Hobbit is great but has issues and as far as the Hobbit movies... they're fun to watch but I have to turn my Tolkien fandom way way down to not get angry.
Love this series...I reread it every couple years.
THANK YOU for making this amazing video about this setting as a DM and creator for tabletop games its amazingly sad that those rare gems of stories are not in the spotlight anymore. i write my own stories to honor those from times to times but its not enough. thank you once again you are an amazing creator.
“Finished? You and I? How can you even begin to understand what I"ve had to do to bring you to this world? You"ve been my only care for over a thousand years. I"ve endured anguish and loss and pain beyond your ability to understand what the words mean - all for you. I"ve lived in poverty and squalor for hundreds of years at a time - all for you. I gave up a sister I loved more than my life itself - all for you. I"ve gone through fire and despair worse than fire a dozen times over - all for you. And you think this has all been an entertainment for me? - some idle amusement? You think the kind of care I"ve devoted to you for a thousand years and more comes cheaply? You and I will never be finished, Belgarion. Never! We will go on together until the end of days if necessary. We will never be finished. You owe me too much for that!” Still gets me every time
This was my first introduction to fantasy. I read it when I was about 14 for the first time. I re-read it every few years, as well as The Elenium. It’s comfort reading, takes me back to my childhood
I loved the Goosebumps series it was the best thing ever as a kid it was scary stories and it ran my imagination wild! Like my mind would just try to imagine every single scene according to rhe book cover and i loved it! My favorite will always be The Haunted School but i loved them all!
Enjoyed the throwback but not the unnecessary use of AI pictures
An important point about these books was that the original books, chronicles, were inspired by games the authors played.
I love this series! Putting today’s PC garbage into any of these series ruins them.
10:25 Ahhh, a misinformed tourist i see.
Pendragon, hobey ho
Really enjoyed this but as someone who was devouring fantasy novels avidly in the 80s I'd like to point out that there was loads before and after Eddings. It's true that fantasy struggled to set the box office on fire back then but the book market was full and varied
The people/nations are "simple" because their gods are simple, just like the gods here on Earth -- seriously, find an Egyptian, Greek, or Norse god that's "deep". Anyway, the key point is that this isn't reality, it's a bunch of books. In that world, those gods *literally walked the land* with their chosen peoples. Beings that bent existence to their collective will to create the world (mostly UL, but still) were interacting, conversing, and physically/psychically present with these people. The people were imprinted, whether intentionally (Torak and Mara) or not (Issa, Belar, Chaldan, Nedra). (Now, UL of course actively avoided the people his sons created, and Aldur, who only chose a handful of Disciples - but those Disciples became walking mini-versions of Aldur.) Comparing those nations/peoples to real ones isn't logically possible -- it's like discussing the morality of letting mystical Force-wielding monks mete out justice in Star Wars; sure *we* would never do that, but that doesn't mean anything in that world. Or in D&D where every member of a "monster" species is given the exact same "alignment" as a fundamental aspect of their nature: *every* Black Dragon is Chaotic Evil and *every* Platinum Dragon is Lawful Good. Finally, as others have pointed out, it was in the Mallorean, after the death of Torak, when the "evil people in the east" actually were freed from the Grolims, the Temples, and the blood sacrifices that kept them groveling and controlled for a thousand years. That's when they were able to start being individuals. That was Eriond's purpose, to provide the Angaraks with a true god to watch over and nuture them. That wasn't "racism" and those weren't "mistakes" -- those were aspects of consistency within the created world as well as key elements of the point of the second series. /shrug
Arguments over sexism and race? Sounds like modern WotC. They've been infected by the same virus that's taken over many beloved companies and IPs.
I don't remember exactly how i got into Dragonlance, I think a friend told me. But it was one of my earliest epic fantasies, along with the Lord of the Rings. I definitely have fond memories of the first 6 books.
Porno Prophecy?
These have been among my favorites for decades. That out of the way, I found the sa story with Barak and Merril troubling. The only outcome for Barak was a son and a better marriage.
Can't read The Beglariad/Malloreon/Polgara anymore without realizing how bland the writing is. I'm in my 30's now, and I read the books when I was 11/12. A shame.
Cats Truely are the Master Species!! 😂
And the Kickstarter for a shapria statue and bust has hit 1.1 mill + in less then the month that it was given And eragon was my first series and big book for epic fantasy Eragon/eldest two book set was my fav birthday gift
