That's true! I think fantasy books as a whole do a good job of humanizing them there have been a handful of movies were they are animalistic. The one that comes to mind for me is Reign of Fire, but I could be totally missing one. Which are you thinking of?
@exitsexamined, Likely all the live action D&D films and the How To Train Your Dragon animated films. I liked the concept of Reign of Fire, but the poster I saw back then showing a full on war between modern humans and dragons lied to me lol. I agree about book dragons. The dragons in Dragonlance were pretty good.
The original movie was one of my first obsessions as a child! My parents rented it every weekend for months. It's more than overdue for a rewatch, thanks for the reminder! If they're doing a big budget reboot I hope they do a good job with it, the original story is such a good and surprisingly touching one. It could also work as a quality miniseries or animated adaption, maybe with a DnD campaign tie in. Also the sequels look wild, I'm almost certain I saw 2 on Sci-fi Network back in the day
Haha, glad to give you a reminder! It was a fun excuse to go through them all for this video. A DnD tie in is such a cool idea, kind of like a more grounded version of Dragonlance? Whoa if I knew they played these on Sci-Fi Network I would have watched it way more haha
Honestly, with the franchise's focus on prequels and with what I'm about to mention being in the public domain, I'm surprised that there hasn't been a story revolving around the Arthurian legends and myths. I mean, the Old Code was said in the first movie to have been created by King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, and Draco took Bowen and the rest of them to Avalon at one point in the film. Maybe you could have it that either Arthur or Merlin had a bond with a dragon and it was with that dragon's help Camelot was established, you could go a step further and reveal that the name Pendragon was made in honor/tribute to the dragons.
I was obsessed with Dragonheart and had the medieval creativity center cdrom. It was a great little game that requires critical thinking and puzzle solving skills
I think I had the exact reaction you did, watched the first one when I was younger, thought it was cool, was shocked it had a sequel... and another one... and another one... and another one
I owned a copy of the Activity Center PC game years before I ever saw the actual movie! There's sooo much nostalgia associated with that game. It had a rudimentary 3D maze set in a haunted forest that always terrified me 😂 I'd love to find a way to play it again; it really sucks that a lot of media from that era gets lost because it can't be played on newer machines.
Whoa, you actually played it? I was thinking it might have been a fever dream. If you find a way to play it again please let me know, I had no idea how to even get started with it haha
This was quite informative. I was kinda too cowardly to try to watch all the later DragonHeart movies cuz I was afraid of being disappointed even tho I loved the 2nd one as a kid but grew to recognize later how awkward it was. I may have to give Vengeance a chance now. As far as medieval fantasy genre stuff goes, I would love to hear your thoughts on Dragon Goes Househunting or Dragon Drive.
Hey glad you enjoyed! I would say go for watching the other ones, they aren't that bad! Dragon goes househunting or Dragon Drive sound interesting! How do you think they compare to Dragonheart?
@@exitsexaminedDragon Goes Househunting feels like the author recaptured the timid Drake from DragonHeart 2 and put him in a much bigger world. Dragon Drive feels like a great spin on a tamable dragon world similar to How To Train Your Dragon (The HTTYD books specifically, since the manga came out in a similar timeframe)
I've got to watch the first Dragonheart movie one day! I ADORE dragons, and medieval inspired stories. My love for dragons all started with PBS show Dragon Tales, but the song Puff The Magic Dragon [it's a really sad song that makes me think of the Velveteen Rabbit] also helped! I'm currently working on a fantasy series about a fox prince who had to go into hiding because of his family's evil advisor and has to go through many quests and adventures before he can return to the throne, and I'd like some advice.
@@exitsexamined Well, I'm still stuck on early drafts for the first book. I cannot reveal much yet because I don't want some of my ideas to get stolen, but I could really use some advice to write a good fantasy series. The first book is where the fox first discovers he is a prince during a perilous adventure.
Honestly, I personally don't hate modern Dragonheart. Is it a bit too long for a single live-action film series? Yes, but despite that, and the cheese, I think that it's managed to hold up pretty well, when compared to many Hollywood franchises
Amusingly, its actually the other way around and is pretty smart: Draco: We could go on fighting and I kill you and wait around for the next would-be dragonslayer trying to make a name for themselves or you kill me and are out of a job cause I AM THE LAST ONE and since nether of us wants to die, wanna keep going or here my alternative? Bowen gets up tired and sore Bowen: whats the alternative?

Love the series though never had the heart to rewatch two. Even as a 12 year old i remember thinking "that was the big final battle? Really?" But i thought Vengeance was a better Eragon film than Eragon though with an obviously smaller budget.
Unfortunately, the original Dragonheart did NOT do even okay at the box office. It got utterly creamed by Independence Day -- just like every other movie coming out that summer :(

1)Personally, I think the CGI of the original is leagues better than most of the stuff we get nowadays. 2) At least they were able to justify the idea of Drake being the last, last dragon by having him be Draco's presumed offspring; so while they did throw out that part of Draco's story, I have no objections to how they did it. Thank you for making a video on this wonderful series!
This movie was my life as a kid, good memories. Can't believe I slept on the 2nd one, looks like meme gold. Great video as always!
The original's score is a large reason it still sticks with me.
The score was surprisingly good, it's even been used in the Olympics I think!
So much so that a part of the theme was used in multiple movie trailers, including Disney's Mulan and Patch Adams.
