Clearing our forested mountain slope and building a driveway in Horsefly, BC - Cariboo Adventure #6
Oh man! Installing your own chimney! What an undertaking! I had a woodstove put in to my 1956 house in Northern BC, by fireplace professionals, in 2021. The chimney had to go through almost the center of the roof, offset from the roof peak due to him not having a roof peak kit with him. But I have a metal roof and attic space, so it went through all of that, and it was a cold December day the day they did it. I mostly tried to stay out of the way and not distract them. The whole thing, stove, chimney, installation, and travel expense from the city, cost me $6200. But... electric heating costs $500./mo in the coldest months (and isn't warm enough), so I save fast. In three years it's paid for itself.
Yes, absolutely!! Totally worth the expense! We could have put it through the roof as well, but that’d have meant losing even more space, so we opted not to. But each bend in the chimney makes it harder to clean. No regrets, but if the place was bigger, through the roof would be a lot more convenient.
My dream is a small (800 sqft or so) timberframe cottage, with 1 1/2 stories, in a rural setting on at least 1/2 acre (prices nowadays petty much eliminate getting 2 acres any more). I am excited to find that there are timber frame construction companies in many regions of BC. I already have my favourite kit house picked out! I am a single woman, so don't think I could build any kind of cottage alone. But the dream still lives!
That’s so exiting!! I think you’ll be able to do more alone than you think. 😃 If I were to do this without Jelger (my partner), I’d probably first get everything organized (delivery, making sure everything is there etc) and next bribe a group of friends for a weekend of the heavy lifting. 😉
@@CaribooAdventure Thanks for the encouragement! I plan to go property shopping next spring. Gotta start somewhere! Thanks for all your replies! I hope your shoulder is better!
@@brightphoebesays That's amazing!!! And slow but steady wins the race for sure!! We're still not really healed but we'll get there!
@@CaribooAdventure I just read that one is not permitted to live in one's build until the occupancy permit is issued at the very end. It that really true? How can they exert that level of control over people? I was planning to build as I can afford, and once it's to lock up, camp out in it and gradually get the finishing done. Am I likely to get in deep trouble for doing that? Am I even allowed to build a cottage without indoor plumbing or in wall wiring? One can do it in other provinces!
ugh, all of the red tape… I’m not sure about those regulations as our situation is different with our legal residence being elsewhere until we finish the build. I hope you’ll find a way to do it!
Do you need a building permit there?
We didn’t! Very lucky that it’s an area with not too much red tape. 😊
Where is a good place/source to study for the owner-builder exam? I mean to learn what I need to know to pass the exam?
Feel free to send us an email at caribooadventure@gmail.com Jelger used a pdf with questions to study I can share with you (and some other resources I can ask him about 😊)
Glad to see that a collection tank outhouse is permitted in the Horsefly area, at least for during your build. That's what got my then husband and I looped up in the Prince George area in 1999.
We’ll have to get it emptied next year! Not excited about that, but local people in the area often time it so they can split transportation costs…
@@CaribooAdventure Good plan! I saw that you have clay soil there, so a simple pit probably wouldn't work. You won't be able to have a septic field either.
@@brightphoebesays It's indeed not possible in clay, hehe, but the ground seems mixed! It seems mostly clay, but some sandy spots here and there. We're planning on a composting toilet (we hope we won't have regrets, lol) because a septic field would be beyond our budget and not in the right spot for where we want to drill for water.
@@CaribooAdventure Composting toilet is the best idea!
Cellular available? Maybe a nr610q on a 3 meter or 5 meter pole using two cellular sim cards
@@tj11391 no, unfortunately there’s zero signal in the entire area.
Nice to see a new video. Look forward to more content. Hope for quick recovery.
Thank you! We hope so too. (although we've been told 12-18 months for Jelger's back so it'll be 2025)
Great to see you back, no matter the circumstances! While you recover and relax a bit, we've been very busy over the last year ourselves. The wife and I have almost completed our house and we're building our own furniture now too! It's been a lot of hard work these past 2 years (I know you know all about that...) but we can see the light at the end of the tunnel. We also recently had a flood that washed out part of our drive, which we are almost finished repairing. Check out the channel while you recover. If two old farts like the wife and I can do it, it will be a snap for the two of you!
That's amazing!! We're looking forward to the furniture building phase, hehe. Great job and we'll check it out for sure.
It is wonderful to see the two of you back. I was getting a touched concern when channels I subscribed to go dark for an extended period. But you two were looking well and I look forward to seeing something in the future. Take care of yourselves!
Thank you so much!
The deer are looking for your nice pets!
Hehe, they usually hide for a week and then they get used to us! 😂
Sometimes life throws you to the wolves, nice to see you survived!!! You two are so nice and have the best sense of humor, I doubt you’ve lost any subscribers either. So happy you made it out to the property, hauling in water is the worst and there could be no better news than your well! Take good care of yourselves and thank you! I’ve had a weird year also, had to have surgery on my elbow and a total knee replacement, all good now, actually it wasn’t that bad at all.
Oh my, surgeries are so much to deal with! You sound very optimistic, that’s awesome!! And thank you for the encouraging words. 😊
Great to hear from you! I don't subscribe only because I'm interested and like what you are doing with your land, I'm a subscriber because I like both of you and would watch even when you're not building! All the best!
Thank you so much!!
Please feel better soon! Hugs from your friends not too far away from you.😊❤
Thank you!! 🥰
Hope you both get better soon. You are my favorite Chanel. Next year, I'm going to build my 18 × 24 cottage in Maine and retire there. You both have given me so many ideas on how to make it easier to build. Thank you.
Thank you so much, that’s amazing!! So exciting you’re starting your build next year! 👏👏👏
Good to see you posting! Don't be embarrassed about lack of progress. Life happens to us all. You were super fortunate that you got the cabin as far along as you did before the issues.
Absolutely!! So happy it’s all dried in/safe from the elements! 😃
Is Tanja from Europe? I can hear a Scandinavian accent?
We’re both from Belgium! 😃
@@CaribooAdventure Well, well. Guess they talk like Scandinavians there aswell 😁👍 Sorry about your back, I have had my struggles too, I know how hard it is, and mental.
@@Turn-2JesusN0W Thank you. I hope your back has healed well! It influences every part of your life indeed.

@@toddjarman542 thank you very much, we appreciate it!!
0:30 What is the height of your upstairs hip wall? Seems to be about 4 feet?
Yes, that’s right! 4 feet 😃
@@CaribooAdventure Thanks! I look forward to seeing the finished cabin.
@@jshepard152 Thank you! Us too... currently both of us are dealing with some health problems, so it might take us a while. BUT we're determined, it's getting built! And we're going to live there fulltime. :)
@@CaribooAdventure I'm very sorry to hear that. You guys seem like an awesome couple. Be well and update us whenever you can.
Congrats and all the best! Amazing! take care.
Thank you! 🙏
If you ever have to pull that floor up off the joist you’re gonna wish you never put that glue down. I’ll guarantee it.
Agreed! We hope we never have to! 😬
I didn’t see any rebar 🤔
There are 3 pieces in each post 😃
Actually, you can see him put one in at 4:15 😂
This is looking really nice. I can't wait to see the final outcome. I go back and forth with different cabin designs I intend to borrow and at the moment, I think yours is the closest to what I want. lol.
Thank you very much!! We're quite happy with our choice!! The only thing we'd consider doing differently is make it a little bit bigger to have the bathroom a bit larger. (we started the build without thinking we'd put in a washer dryer unit, making our bathroom layout extra tight, haha)
@@CaribooAdventure Building too big vs. too small is always a challenge. I wonder if it would be fairly simple to build on a small lean-to type structure on one side of the cabin, just big enough to contain your washer/dryer. Whatever space is left could be a closet, storage space, etc.
British Columbia is a great area. I used to live about 40 miles from Victoria, but I was in the US... Washington.
Nice!! Love the nature… 😃
@@CaribooAdventure Absolutely! The whole area is magical.
It's a great-looking cabin! Can you tell me any details about your ridge beam? How did you know what size beam you'd need, what did it cost, etc?
In the BC building code there's tables that mention snow burden, the span, ...so we found our information there! (and built it stronger than the code said) You should have a local building code publicly available. Ours is built in place laminated out of 4 2x12's. (way cheaper, but we don't remember the exact cost)
@@CaribooAdventure Thanks very much. I'm going to be building something fairly similar.
Best of luck to all of you! Currently planning to build a similar kind of build in Canada also. Hope to see health and more videos soon.
Thank you!! Very exciting you’re planning a build!
1:42 I think it would have been a lot easier to roll that stove. 😁
Hehe, definitely!! We were scared about damaging the fire bricks in there and didn’t want to remove the packaging to take them out.
@@CaribooAdventure Ohh, good thought. I didn't think of that. I binged your videos tonight and enjoyed them all.
Aww, thank you!! 😃
By any chance, would you mind sharing the prints for your build? 😅 I'll be building a 20x20 2 story home, and I like how you build yours
I wish I could send them, but they only exist on paper. 😬 we’re currently away too… Jelger drew them by hand…
Why do all you guys just talk about random stuff so much like get straight to the building instead of dragging it out
Our channel is also a way of sharing with our family overseas and a way to remember things for ourselves. 😊 (that includes some extra yapping 😂)
It's certainly doable to mix that much concrete yourself. I did 3 yards for piers in a couple of days. Had navyjack delivered, several bags of portland cement and a cement mixer. You don't need running water, just fill some totes/buckets from rain water or a lake/creek.
Doable yes, but we’re not mad we opted for the convenience/certainty here. For the future if we’re building a shed or so we would. 😊
How’s the build coming along ?
We’re out of commission for a bit unfortunately. I (Tanja) have a frozen shoulder and it’s not progressing as it should. I can’t build at all (and some regular living tasks require more effort), so we decided to spend our winter with family!
Got you a Stiletto, nice 👍
Yes! No regrets, it made a huge difference! 😃
The way you reinforced everything was probably wise. I bet that is a very solid floor for your cabin.
Yes, we’re very happy with it! Two winters later and everything is still level! 😃
Did you use plans, how did ya know what to order in lumber package
Jelger drew the plans. He calculated the lumber with formulas (Larry Haun’s book was great for that!)
Great job, is there a reason you didn’t go full top floor?
We thought it would look weird because it’s so narrow. Way too tall for a small surface. In hindsight it might have been nice to have more storage. 😂
Thanks guys!, love the build and great pricing explanation
Our pleasure!
Some great shots. Thanks. Next time you guys get up here, please come over for a coffee. I finally started my Cariboo adventure this past summer. It's an incredible place to live and play.
Nice!! That’s so exciting! Are we in the same town? 😉
Yes. I bought a 5 acre place up on Day Road, just off the Mitchell Bay Road north of Horsefly. Moved in last August. The coffee pot is always on. @@CaribooAdventure
Oooh! Very nice!!
Been missing you guys, will there be a new build video soon?
We haven’t done any building because of my frozen shoulder. I hope it’ll gradually improve and we can get back to building in spring (got a steroid shot and do daily exercises, but it’s sloooow progress). Fingers crossed! 🤞
I hope your shoulder is healing well, nice little episode there!
Thank you! It’s so so 😬. I’m hopeful for the spring!
@@CaribooAdventure Beterschap!
What is your square footage?
It’s 16 feet by 20 feet. (And a second floor minus the staircase opening, I’d have to dig through our notes to find the exact size of that, hehe)
Having to deal with adhesives when it’s cold. What a pain in the tuckus.
Hehe, yes we learned it the hard way!
Also vielleicht drei Wochen in Total.
Don't forget the spark arr-ester when you clean your chimney.
