I suppose it depends on where in the Cariboo your located. In my corner of the Cariboo the snow load is so heavy, it would peel a single snow guard right off the roof, and take the chimney with it. That's the problem, snow doesn't respect you, you have to respect the snow.
There's two other things that are of concern to me. One is the chimney cap. That type of cap, with the woods that we burn here in the Cariboo, have a tendency to creosote up very quickly, and end up getting tossed because they're more of a hassle than a help. Second item of concern is the height of your chimney. If the snow builds higher than the height of the chimney, it will have difficulty drafting, as well as wind passing over the roof could cause it to back draft, and probably will. I just fixed that problem on someone else's cabin, who had a similar chimney configuration as you do. Their chimney would back draft every time there was the slightest of breeze that would pass over the roof. We stuck two more lengths of pipe on the chimney and the drafting problem went away. General rule of thumb, is your chimney should be equal to, or higher than the peak of your roof.
I've heated with wood for more than fourty years, and have seen what can happen with an improperly configured chimney, and have climbed up on numerous roofs the remedy those problems.
The more twists and turns that are put in a chimney, the faster it will creosote. Especially with the types of woods we have to burn in the Cariboo.
I enjoy the videos, have been a subscriber from the beginning. How couldn't I, with a name like Cariboo Adventure. Lol. I have friends who live in Horsefly, they've been there for twenty odd years. It's an interesting place to say the least.
    Cheers.

Oh my! We got the snow guard based on Mainline Roofing in William's lake recommendation. They've got one there themselves that you can see in action in winter, haha. That said, because of the metal roof, we feel we never got the same load as people with shingles. Last year even before we had the stove, we noticed a huge difference with our neighbours here. So maybe we're lucky!
And you're absolutely right, the more twists and turns, the worse. If we ever end up building a larger structure, we're putting it straight through the roof. (we desperately wanted to save every inch of space here)
We did have to clean the chimney cap indeed because of the creosote. We're not getting rid of it though, because I heard people get bird/critters in there, haha. It'll just mean cleaning it 2-3 times per year... sigh.
The length of the chimney has been a bit of a weird one here... we did have another piece of pipe that we actually returned. We were recommended to burn the stove and see how hot it got and how well it drafted. Since we never had a problem with back draft last winter/spring, we just kept it as is. We've noticed if there's no wind, the smoke does go down on that side of the house, but we only notice that if we have the windows open. (it gets HOT, hahaha) Not sure if that's because of the length of the chimney...
It's certainly been a journey! Thanks for the tips and for following along!

It's actually working great when there's wind, so we're not touching it for now. But if we're ever doing a different building, we might!
