I appreciate your candid summarization, completely described my own experience, happily in quiet retirement now. if I pass you on the trail I'll nod, smile and keep going 🥾🌄
What I've noticed with regards to stupid people is they don't like it when you tell them 🤣😂❤️🇬🇧
I think at 67 I'm a bit like that. Being alone in the woods or countryside is a kind of meditation for me and I actually feel part of nature. Out there you can just 'be'.
Same here at 78. Oh there are a couple of friends but not more. I got rid of most of the annoyances : activities, things and people. I stay away from fights, controversies. Am I happy? I do not know but I feel good with myself am never bored and enjoy life reading, listening to music, watching movies, walking in the snow at 2 in the morning and cycling on deserted side roads.
Even people I like are too demnding of my time, which being nearer the end of my life than the beginning, time becomes more valuable. As I age, there is more chaff than wheat
Misanthropes get a bad rap.
Thing is...I can't imagine life without my dogs. Be happy in your own skin and don't apologise for who you are. 😊
"When I was young, I was afraid that I would bore people. But now that I'm old, I'm afraid that people will bore me." My Mum
Jean-Paul Sartre once said 'If you're lonely when you're alone, you're in bad company.' Kudos GC for simply being honest that you enjoy solitude and don't need to be in other's company, as society incessantly urges us. Cheers, and happy trails 😎
I recently transferred from a job that I worked by myself for the most part for many years. My new job in the same company requires me to work in crews. Let me just say, I miss my alone time so much. I was chasing more money taking the transfer which did come to fruition. But I completely overlooked the value of my Solitude. I’m in my mid 50’s and have come to the realization that I can’t tolerate people anymore. I literally cringe every morning going to work now. I used to love going to work just to get away from everyone. And now it’s gone. Don’t make the same mistake I made.
Words of wisdom.
Beautiful.
Amen my friend, well said.
Simple ! ❤😊
This behavior is only possible with a modern service society and city living. Everyone dependent on others for food, health, materials etc. Learn to accept reality ❤
Around the 4 minute mark I found myself bored with what you were saying and moved on. Thanks for proving your point.
I much rather your take, solitude vs. loneliness. Of course I’ve learned to appreciate solitude because people get on my nerves. I’ve begun taking vacations by myself now instead of travelling with someone.
if you try selling an older car on facebook marketplace, you will want to get away from people too!!! hahah
Says he wants to be alone, but has a you tube video.
Just find it ironic.😊
Many people have been conditioned to need the frequent company of other people. On the other hand many of those people find the company of others consistently rewarding. Many people find themselves most often alone and to them the situation is distressing. The likely reasons for this are too numerous to list. But these are the people who for whom being a lone and lonely have a deleterious effect on longevity. Those of us who find solitude peaceful and pleasant are often comfortable being left alone with their thoughts. Socializing is a game. By that I don’t mean to denigrate socializing but it’s an activity with rules and objectives. Somewhere along the way I grew tired of participating in the game, mostly because I often didn’t want to be constrained by rules. It’s not fair to others to break those rules so I avoided the game more until I basically stopped. No I enjoy my own company but, like this man, I understand that interaction with others is necessary and entails following the rules in order to pleasantly navigate daily life.
I've always been a loner. Now that I'm 70, I'm whatever is beyond a loner.
I could not have said it better.
Well half the population is too stupid to talk to. So theirs that
ditto !
I am not a loner. I loved this video because it reminded me we are all different and we should be true to ourselves.
I miss the close connection i had with my wife, times change, she has been gone for five years and now I'm not sure i would want anyone around that much, buddy came buy for 20 min today ,that was enough.
Wig wam, tee pee is my Indian name as I’m to tense,
I can relate to this so well, only difference is that I was a party animal in my 20s, I still am tiny but, however, at 40 I don’t like being around people anymore, don’t want to talk to my friends or neighbours unless absolutely necessary. This is also affecting my work, I don’t like to speak to my own team
Iam only 50 and want to spend most of my time alone . I love my own company.
It is comforting to be at peace with one's self.
Thanks for your candid video. Have you ever met with a therapist \ psychologist to possibly help you understand why you withdrew from engaging with others? At some point it is likely you will need assistance with daily living. How will you handle this without a life partner? Peace
Thanks for the thoughful suggestion. I have no intent to linger through a long decline, if I have any choice in the matter, I do have freinds, but I would not want to be dependent on them. There are tough issues, but ones we must all face.
made pretty good sense up till the end when you asked "how about you?". Kind of a refutation of the whole other part of the video.
Good point, I had not thought about that. I meant it more as a rhetorical question, a question for the viewer to ask themselves, not as a conversation starter. I had seen that line in a Korean drama and found it very thought provoking.
Arrogant suck.
I’m 70 and always been an introvert but still liked socialising when younger. Now I’m completely happy to be by myself. It happened fairly quickly over a few years in my late 60s. I wondered whether it’s caused by changes in hormonal levels as motivation in general has gone down as well. I suspect I’ll be found in my house years after I shuffle off my mortal coils.
I do think that hormones may have a role as men tend to mellow with age. The final years are likely going to be challenging ones. I gave my neighbors a key so they can check if I disappear without contact. . .
This is me to a T, and my explanation is the gradual waning of libido. Sex drives us into the world. I see the mirror opposite of this phenomenon among teens who suddenly abandon the isolation of staring at devices in their bedrooms to begin their first serious romantic relationship. This is not just a quest to get laid, it's that different chemicals in our bodies makes us different human beings.
I think that is a very honest explanation. The search for adventure took me around the world, but I do not have the motivation to travel around the world anymore. . . Thanks for that perceptive thought.
If it works for you great. I have a brother who is very similar in outlook - and he's a happy person I guess. But it's not for me. I like my alone time but I need connection with others regularly.
That makes sense, my brother is a social butterfly, and there is room for us each to be ourselves. I think the desire for socializing falls along a spectrum, and one is no better than the other, the important thing is what the individual feels comfortable with. Thanks for your comment.
I'm struggling whether I want to restart group travel again. Other people's idiosyncrasies bug me. As terrible as covid lockdown was I found joy in solitude as long as I could get groceries and go out for a walk or a drive every now and then.
I think covid really was an eye opener for people who prefer solitude. In my late 20's I did some group travel, but I found it best to get to the destination together and then go off on my own. Walking through a museum at someone else's pace would be unbearable to me. With age, I just started doing the journey myself which gives more flexibility. There are so many ways to live, and no one is better or worse, it is just what is most comfortable, from my perspective.
You could have stole the steak to keep solitude.
LOL. But I might not like all the company in the jail cell!
When your health fails you will wish you had developed a community of friends instead of avoiding people because you lacked the empathy and patience to deal with them and viewed them only as having utility. Looking at the comments this seems to be primarily a narcissistic boomer disease.
Could be. I have no intent of lingering when my health fails, but maybe I will have no choice in the matter. . . I am not sure that being alone is a character of narcissists, I thought they sought the attention of others? Nonetheless, there is room for many different opinions and approaches to life. Cheers.
@GC-Hiker I don't mean to insult. This is actually very concerning for me. I see a lot of people, mainly 50+, making these types of videos, and I don't think it is a healthy thing. We need community now more than ever.
I’m 71 also. I’ve always been a loner and uncomfortable around most people. Now I have my loving wife and two grown sons who are good to me, one good friend I’ve known forever, and my wife’s brother and sister who are good people. I see my sister once a year. Life is good.
It sounds like you have a good core to support and understand you. Congratulations!
Great video my friend. Are you alone all of the time or do you still have some friends?
I do maintain a few friends and relationships with a few family members. I am not a hermit and I understand that I need people, but I also cherish my time alone. Thanks for the inquiry.
I mean you are aware of the irony of shooting editing and posting a video, and then asking for comments, about solitude is right? ;)
Yes, I meant this as a video essay and I never expected more than a handful of people to view it. I try to reply to the comments out of courtesy, but it is really wearing me down and not what I was looking for. I guess I could just shut down the comments or allow them to be an open forum (probably the best choice), but I expect RUclips will stop showing the video soon and the comments will cease. That will be a much more satisfactory situation for me. Thanks for your observation.
@GC-Hiker I liked the video and I like your point of view on solitude, just thought it was funny mostly. So thanks for sharing? 😊
Definitely noticing I like having fewer friends, would never had guessed earlier in my life :)
Same here. I think the aging process has a definte role in this.
Great news! thank you for the information!
Thank you for sharing that. I also have elements of your thoughts in my life. It’s great to know that some people understand. Enjoy yourself :-) From Boaz in Denmark
Thank you, and greetings to Denmark.
I’m an old bull put out to pasture in my own paddock don’t bother me
Great analogy. Roaming the open fields was fun, but munching some grass in one location is not bad either.
Being still, quiet, resonating with Nature, can give a person very profound insights and answers. Not all can quiet the mind...the chatter-box. Peace all.
Mmm. I agree, there is something about stillness in nature, solitude in nature, that is quite calming for me.
Explain why you have RUclips channel, because it does seem contradictory, wanting to be alone, yet posting ons social media about it. I bet you check your comments, subscriptions and likes. It is fine, but it needs to articulated for people to accept the genuineness of your thesis about solitude.
Neat. I am 35 and undergoing the opposite change. I've been more solitary most of my life and upon reflection, I've always been (and still am) selective about who I befriend (avoiding unreliable and stressful people/relationships). Now I am beginning to reach out and be social a lot more, and not infrequently I'm the first one on the dance floor where that never was the case before. Maybe there are just multiple sides to life and we're discovering them in the opposite order. :)
Interesting. I am not suggesting that one is better than the other, and I certainly enjoyed the wild times of my youth, but with age, I just find that I have drawn back and enjoy solitude. All the best to you in your expanding social confidence and circle.
I will be 65 in a few months. I feel I don't have much time left to waste with people. For that, I am also very happy that I will become single soon.
That is a very perceptive comment, I think the shrinking amount of time may help explain why many pull back with age.
