Personally, I think the inflation in the room rates is a shame. When I was in my late teens, I was able to stay at the Old Faithful Lodge in Yellowstone, not much more than a regular hotel. I could never afford to do the same thing today. I think the parks (and the lodges) should be for people, not for profit.

They will offer signicant discounts to fill rooms for walk-ups. In prime season I got a room for $130 at Maswik that way, but it is risky too not to have a reservation. I think the key word is to ask for "the manager's special." Thanks for the useful tip!
