Betty on a Boat
Великобритания
Добавлен 3 июл 2018
Hello if you're reading this! I'm Betty and I thought I'd start sharing some of my narrowboat adventures on RUclips.
I'm originally from Wolverhampton so I grew up around canals. After dreaming of having my own narrowboat for many years I finally took the plunge and got my petite 30ft Aintree Beetle in July 2023.
I then went on a crazy 171-mile journey to bring it back to the Midlands over the space of two weeks. It was an eventful journey - I got stuck at the bottom of my first lock, fell in the canal, and I survived most of the trip without running water due to a problem with the boat.
Anyway, I'd love it if you subscribed and joined me on my travels, and maybe offered some moral support!

Finally reaching Wolverhampton on my narrowboat!
In this video you can see me finally reaching my home city of Wolverhampton by narrowboat!
I was helped by my friend Terri and her children Bela and Tommy, who wanted to be in a video after watching some of my previous ones. Terri and Bela also helped with some of the filming, while Tommy did a very important job of being the navigator.
People often say they enjoy watching my videos because they're relaxing. This one isn't quite as relaxing... but I hope you still enjoy it!

Betty on a Boat Christmas Special 🎄
Просмотров 45 тыс.Месяц назад
Merry Christmas everyone! I thought it would be fun to film a Christmas special to round off my first year of making these videos. It's as action-packed as usual - you can see me driving at speeds of up to 4mph, being unknowingly followed by swans, and also going under several low bridges. Thanks as ever for watching!
A cosy autumn cruise on my narrowboat
Просмотров 77 тыс.2 месяца назад
I've been really enjoying autumn along the towpath this year - I think it's probably the most beautiful time of year to see England's canals. In this video you can see me continuing my journey along the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal. Special thanks to fellow boater Kate, who helped me get through several locks! (She watches these videos and said it was OK to film her.)
Loki the dog's first narrowboat trip
Просмотров 30 тыс.3 месяца назад
For this part of my journey I was joined by my auntie and her dog Loki! Loki had never been on a narrowboat before but he was a very good boy and didn't chase after any ducks or try to jump in the canal. I've written subtitles for anyone has trouble hearing us talking in this video - just click on the button in the bottom right of the screen. (I'm thinking of investing in a wireless microphone ...
Heading towards Wolverhampton (and why I left before)
Просмотров 93 тыс.3 месяца назад
As I continue my narrowboat journey along the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal, in this video you can see me going through the outskirts of Stafford. This brought back some memories from my early twenties, and I reflected a bit on why I moved away from Wolverhampton all those years ago. By the way, here's a link to a video where you can find out more about the Stafford Riverway Link: rucl...
Someone is impersonating me on TikTok

Well this is weird... I've recently found out that someone has been impersonating me on TikTok! I thought I'd post this brief video to let you all know that it isn't me. If any of you are on TikTok and are able to report the account for me I would really appreciate it. Also, if anyone has any idea why this might have happened then let me know! Here is a link to the imposter account: www.tiktok....
Taking my narrowboat to my 'home' canal
Просмотров 145 тыс.4 месяца назад
After not filming a video for a while I've decided to document my journey as I head towards my 'home' canal, the Staffordshire and Worcestershire. As the months go by I'll be seeing parts of the canal I remember from my childhood, except this time I'll be seeing them from my narrowboat rather than from the towpath. I hope you enjoy watching my journey!
Bad news and a change of plan

It feels very weird to be posting about something so personal on the internet but it didn't feel right to carry on making videos like normal without explaining what's been going on. As discussed in the video, here are some links where you can get information on the symptoms of prostate cancer: www.nhs.uk/conditions/prostate-cancer/symptoms/ www.cancerresearchuk.org/about-cancer/prostate-cancer/...
Tackling the River Trent on my narrowboat
Просмотров 40 тыс.6 месяцев назад
In this video you can see me taking my narrowboat on part of the River Trent, in the county of Staffordshire in England. It was a really beautiful stretch of river but my heart was racing and I was glad to get off. I definitely feel safer on canals! Thanks for watching!
A sunny narrowboat cruise across a canal aqueduct
Просмотров 78 тыс.7 месяцев назад
In this video I took my narrowboat over a canal aqueduct which crosses the River Dove. The River Dove follows the border between the English counties of Derbyshire and Staffordshire, which means I started off in one county and ended up in another! Sorry it has taken me so long to post another video by the way. I've had a lot going on lately and I haven't had much free time to edit this together...
Befriending a swan and moving my car
Просмотров 70 тыс.7 месяцев назад
This video didn't turn out how I was expecting! It was meant to be all about how I move my car whenever I move my narrowboat, but then I befriended a swan. I've only recently discovered how to tell the difference between male and female swans. Males have a black bit at the base of their bill which swells and becomes larger during breeding season, so this was definitely a male swan. Anyway, than...
How I moor my narrowboat as a solo boater
Просмотров 279 тыс.8 месяцев назад
For this video I thought I'd respond to a question that someone asked me after watching one of my previous videos. It's all about how I moor my narrowboat, which is a bit more difficult when you're on your own. By the way, I think I pronounce "pilings" wrong in this video. I've only ever seen the word written down so I don't know how to pronounce it. Anyway, I hope people find this video useful...
Attempting to fix my narrowboat
Просмотров 39 тыс.8 месяцев назад
I'm sorry if this video is a bit boring! I'm definitely not a DIY expert and I wasn't going to film this but I thought I'd better explain why I can't do a narrowboat tour at the moment. I also thought it would be good to show the reality of narrowboat life. I've had quite a few comments from people saying it looks idyllic, and it can be at times, but narrowboats need a lot of maintenance and th...
How I get water on my narrowboat (and do a three-point turn)
Просмотров 47 тыс.9 месяцев назад
It's the third video of me on my narrowboat and I think I come across as a bit miserable in this one... I promise I'm more cheerful in real life! I needed to move my boat after being moored in the same spot for two weeks and I also needed to get water, which meant turning the boat around in the canal. As you'll see from the video it's a bit more difficult than turning a car around. Thanks again...
How I do canal locks on my narrowboat as a solo boater
Просмотров 80 тыс.9 месяцев назад
I've made another video! Thank you to everyone who watched the last one, left nice comments and subscribed to my channel. I didn't expect such a positive reaction but it was really nice. For this video I thought I'd show people how I do canal locks. I was quite scared and confused about locks before I got my boat. I'd been on a couple of narrowboat holidays with friends but we'd only done five ...

Slainte !
Hi Betty, whenever I watch one of your videos I can’t help but sing this song (I changed the words). Whoa boat Betty Bam ba lam Whoa boat Betty Bam ba lam She’s from Birmingham Bam ba lam Whoa boat Betty. Sorry lol
Haha! I’m not from Birmingham though!
You are so competent as a Boater.A natural.First time I've watched your blog.I watched The mindful narrowboat.Another girl and her dog.She was interesting too. I'll pop back from time to time to keep tabs on you.Good luck and keep at it.
Keep the videos up Betty! Its always lovely to see you
Just a question, would it not be possible to install a bilge pump?
There’s one in the engine bay but it’s separated from the living bit of the boat.
@ I suppose if a full bottom bilge pump wasn’t installed during fabrication/manufacture it’d be a bit of a pain to install (with the water seals needed etc) Great content by the way , thanks so much for the insights. 👌
Hey it's awkward steering left to go right or vice versa... loving the vlogs
I'm from Wolves originally. There's not a foot of those paths I've not walked.
Ahhh Betty, I'm sorry. My heart and thoughts are with you. Wishing him a speedy recovery.❤
I watched this again and found I missed some really nice things you said Betty Keep up what you do it's inspirational to hear a kind woman share her life ❤😊
What a wonderful video. I love watching these.
Hi Betty! Question: how long does it take, on average, for a lock to fill so you can move your boat and be on your way? Thanks, enjoy watching.....
It depends on the size of the lock! Some are deeper and some are double the width so they take longer to fill. I’d say about five minutes though?
Congrats on success of channel. Yes your videos are so relaxing and refreshing and have saved all you videos from day 1 so i can enjoy anytime when i don't have internet. Please keep up the great work.
Thanks for watching from the start!
Thank you for your lovely videos. The microphone is a great addition. Have a good 2025 year on (and off) the canals!
Thank you, you too!
Nice videos very peaceful good luck on your trips
The bridge at 17:30 is the Warren Truss bridge (aka Meccano bridge). It carried the Wombourne branch line over the canal until the line was closed in 1932.
I’m glad someone knows the facts!
12:19 that’s a very narrow looking lock? Boats with a wide berth must have trouble along this stretch?
Yes, widebeams aren’t able to go on this particular canal as the locks are too narrow.
In fact, I think the same is true of the majority of canals in the UK.
All good fun Betty, thanks,❤
Very sweet. Thank you for uploading :🤓
i live i wolverhampton
Betty you are so clear and you are so great in doing your videos thank you for time I been a watcher from day one x
Aww thank you for watching from the start! 😀
Just subscribed.. loving your vids great to see your confidence building keep up the good work 😊
Thank you! ☺️
Thank you ladies for the video great to see you on my local canal xx
Also… look out for shopping trolleys, out of the mouth of babes ..
Very beautiful along the canal
Over here in the States you definitely do NOT want to visit Compton...Even armed,in an armored Hummer, with a crew.. Those eyes 😍
Haha yes, it has always amused me that there’s a Compton in the US too!
After watching all the Trump stuff this afternoon this has calmed me down soo much. What a tonic for the soul.
🇺🇸👨💼👍
I think it’s good to switch off from the news and focus on more positive things!
I'm sorry but this is next level. When Netflix come calling hold out as you are number 1 viewing
🤣
Family day out. Lovely! 😍😍
Great fun! 😊
As normal your videos make me smile and relax. I normally watch on a weekend after a stressful week at work. A blissfully 20 mins. Did I miss a video? Not seen your on board cooking video yet wink wink
Btw if wondering why I show posting comments on video after only few minutes, it is because I watch the full videos on my TV but can't easily comment on TV so use my phone to post the comment. Try typing my long comments on a TV remote!!
I need some ideas for videos now I’ve reached Wolverhampton so a cooking one may well feature!
You need to start charging for rides on your boat. I,m in Nottingham and would pay for a small tour.
I think I’d need a special licence to do paid trips!
So lovely to see children interacting with you and their mum great fun Betty
That's a lovely video, looks you and your friend had a great time.
Out of darkness cometh the light. Bostin Ay It.
Funny video with exiting kids 😅
Rule #1: when you steer left and the boat starts pointing to the left shoulder far ahead, steer back right for a moment and then straight. Rule #2: if you reach Rule #1 too quick, use shorter tiller swings next time. 😊
These have to be the most wholesome videos ever in the history of everything :-). Top 10, anyway.
Haha, thank you! 😀
Lovely boat trip Betty - try not to hit the ducks.
I’ll try but it will be difficult without my helpers to point them out! 🦆 🦆
I keep wanting to steer right, when you go under bridges. It feels like we’re going to hit the bridge. If there’s nothing coming the other way, why not pass under in the centre? It was nice meeting Terri and the kids.
It’s because the towpath goes under the bridge, on either the right or the left, so if I aimed for the centre of the arch I’d hit the towpath. It’s a bit difficult to see from the angle I film at. I’ll try putting a camera on the front of the boat one day!
@bettyonaboat Oh. Thanks for explaining Betty👍
You seem such a gentle and sensitive person. I really enjoy your videos xx
