How I get water on my narrowboat (and do a three-point turn)

  • It's the third video of me on my narrowboat and I think I come across as a bit miserable in this one... I promise I'm more cheerful in real life!
    I needed to move my boat after being moored in the same spot for two weeks and I also needed to get water, which meant turning the boat around in the canal. As you'll see from the video it's a bit more difficult than turning a car around.
    Thanks again to everyone who has been watching these videos!

    Hi, I had a quick look through the comments to see if anyone else mentioned your hot water but can't see any, so, in case anyone is a little confused... the hot water coming from the tap/shower isn't actually the same water used to cool the engine, it's pumped through a heat exchanger that's mounted to the engine and back to the hot water storage tank. I'm not a boater myself but I do work on a few boats as a mechanic, so I've been to most of the marina's in your area, including Shardlow. Thanks for continuing to post videos.

    • @narrowboatlongpod4176
      @narrowboatlongpod4176 Месяц назад +6

      The same water that cools the engine (and has antifreeze in it) goes through a coil inside the hot water cylinder (calorifier), so the two never mix. This is similar to the hot water cylinders in a domestic house but, because the heat source (the engine) is uncontrolled, it can get very hot. To overcome this, there is a blending valve that mixes hot and cold water to a safe temperature when it is delivered to the taps.

    Bonjour Betty. Votre demi tour dans le canal était très bien car tous ceux qui ont déjà navigués et fait des demi tour en bateaux savent que cela est assez compliqué surtout sur ce type de bateau qui a un gouvernail très peu profond ce qui nuis a la maniabilité surtout en marche arrière. La faible profondeur d'eau dans les canaux ne permet pas d'avoir des gouvernails plus profond donc il faut faire avec. Merci pour ce partage. Prenez soin de vous. Amitiés du sud de la France. Olivier.

      Bonjour Olivier. Je suis contente que tu aies pensé que mon demi-tour dans le canal était bon. Je n'ai jamais conduit qu'un petit bateau, donc je ne sais pas comment les autres bateaux se comparent, il est intéressant qu'avoir un gouvernail peu profond nuise à la maniabilité. Cela a du sens et je peux comprendre pourquoi c’est le cas. Amitiés d'Angleterre. Betty

    I was re-watching this one and noticed something. When you are filling the tank, you said insert the hose in the tank and turn on the tap. You really should turn on the tap and flush your hose then stick the end in the fill. You don't need the grunge in your system, or in you. Bacteria, possible mold, and general debris, as well as insects can get started easily in damp dark spaces. Just a thought. And thats in potable water hoses. General garden hoses are even worse as they contain certain toxins to help prevent the bacteria growth. Thats why even at your house, it's not safe to drink from the hose on a hot day unless you flush it first.
