I know that's not easy. Stay safe out there Betty, and happy cruising.
Thank you, that's great to hear given your background in sound production! Sound levels are a difficult balance. I'm never quite sure how loud to have the music, for example.

hi betty 😁 another awesome installment in your narrowboat adventure for us all to enjoy thank you! and it's nice to see you growing in confidence due to the very positive feedback from your thousands of fans around the world :) you deserve every bit of it! 🤗
I love the way you explain things , Betty. Simple and to the point. Your videos would be excellent for people thinking of living or taking a holiday in a canal boat. They are also very relaxing ! Thank you.
I do hope they're helpful to people! I think people who live on boats themselves probably know all this stuff already, so I think my videos are probably more useful to hire boaters or people starting out!
When you step off the stern with the centre line, take a pin and hammer, and tie the centreline down. Saves you from running back and forth pulling the boat back in...😊. Off course, after you have secured the bow and stern lines, you untie and retrieve the centre line and mooring pin. Never moor a boat with the centre line.... As Crissecorr mentioned elsewhere, you should use a simple 'figure of eight' to secure the mooring line. You should really never tie knots in lines, in case they either need to be released fast, or ths knot gets to tight to undo (ever tried to untie a frozen knot?😂). Bringing the line back to the boat is absolutly the best practice, and to finish it off, a simple figure of eight on a cleat (like the bow), or two half turns on a post, finished with the rest of the line neatly coiled next to it.
Hi Betty, I'm so glad RUclips brought me here as I've really enjoyed catching up on your Vlogs so far - hopefully you'll continue this as I found it rather relaxing to watch after stressful days at work. I'm an ex-narrowboater from your part of the world and it's been too long since I last cruised the cut I really miss the calm and relaxing way to travel. Nice that you share your journey as a novice owner - I'm sure many would be too nervous at the beginning ;) There's something about the cut and the slower pace of life that I also found so magical back when I enjoyed time on our 45ft ex-hire boat which I spent a long time converting so that my disabled dad could get to use it despite mobility issues, but that's the magic of having such a narrow cabin! I embraced the lifestyle taking it to Netherton on one of the IWA rallies that attracted hundreds of boats! That was an adventure just getting there from the base mooring near Daventry via Brum too! I learnt a lot the hard way but being an engineer of all sorts of transport in my life I just adapted skills to suit the boats needs. If you do as much work as you can yourself, you'll have so much more confidence as your journey continues. Happy cruising, and enjoy life as much as you can on our beautiful inland waterways! Pete
@@bettyonaboat oh they are, and here's hoping they continue to do so! Don't be afraid to ask anything by the way - there's always help or advice at hand if needed? As for bringing back the memories - oh yes indeed! Watching others out there always does - fond memories / adventures / perils of cruising... you name it, they're all coming back :)
So nice to see you again. I had a holiday in a narrow boat many years ago on the Oxford Canal. Your videos bring back many happy memories. As others have commented your natural style of presenting is really nice and I enjoy seeing you. Please keep em coming!
I've been enjoying catching up on your videos, for they're relaxing and peaceful. The pace allows one to take in nature (and the occasional horse!) and is similar to how I go out on my landscape/wildlife photography jaunts here in various public lands. It's not the first time I've seen the narrowboats nor the canals but it IS the first time I've actually read up on them and really realized the extent of the network and its history. Just as others have mentioned, your vids are refreshing and the music fitting without being a nuisance (you are quite adept with your production values). It's truly nice to see someone simply sharing their niche without being over-the-top. Thanks!
@@bettyonaboat You're quite welcome... I have a feeling your channel will be well received and thank you for sharing these various adventures, plus the workings of your boat. Perhaps you will be sufficiently fortunate to be moored somewhere relatively dark so you might see the aurora that is so frequent this week (I'm not fond of getting up at 2am but that is today's goal for images...). Thank you again and here's hoping we all see more experiences soon as you find time to post.
I’ve watched a number of canal dwellers/travellers and can’t help thinking, canal life should be put on prescription as a way of de-stressing and learning a new pace of life. Thank you for taking us along and sharing a snippet of your life 🙂
There is something wonderfully naive and sweet about you and your videos. It's compulsive viewing. I wish you the very best for the future and look forward to watching the channel grow.
I love watching your boating videos. I used to watch loads but just don’t get the time these days, but your channel is one of the few non-boating fitout videos I now regularly watch. I will try and remember that know for when I am eventually on the water.
Always great to watch you Betty and see how your travels continue. I hope you are managing to sort out your 'spongy' cabin floor. It would be interesting to know a bit of your history, why you decided to to buy your boat, what your long term plans are and do you do remote work etc to finance your new life....
I'm planning to talk more about all of this in future videos but I do have a full-time job and I do mostly work remotely, which is fortunate, as I used to work in an office every day before the pandemic. I'll do a DIY update too!
Thank you! I think the nice weather helped with this one as it made me feel happier and more relaxed. I did record an intro for this one before I started cruising and it wasn't very good, then once I was cruising along I felt a lot more comfortable so I decided to give it another go!
Lovely channel and very relaxed feel. None of the usual false you tuber 'polish' which is appreciated. I enjoy the wholesome feel when I watch your videos so keep it up and don't change 🙂
I adore the freedom of canal cruising ❤ get nervous too when too many people are around. Loving your cure boat, not too noisy and calmer sunny weather 🤗 Just so relaxing betty without noisy speedboat show offs ☺️ horses are so elegant 😌 great insight again on using canals safety 🫶🏼
Ha, thank you! My accent isn't as strong as it used to be as I'm moved around a bit as an adult. I saw my dad on Saturday though so I went full-on Wolverhampton again.
@@bettyonaboat Yeah, I love different accents and it's amazing how people soon drop into 'full on' again when talking with people from their original area. Mine's 'moderated' Yorkshire after travelling around, but soon gets a lot stronger when I'm back with old school friends! I'm looking forward to watching more of your really nicely produced videos - what a great life!
I enjoyed sharing your life on your boat, Something that I can't do now I am living in Canada. Half the fun is learning how to do new things. Great to see you using a long centre line, so many people get into trouble jumping off with a bow or stern line. I did cringe when I saw you tying the mooring line with so many knots. Never tie knots in a mooring line! you never know when you may want to release it quickly. Simply one wrap round the cleat and cross over and back over to form an X turning the last loop over. This shows other boaters that you are a real boater!
I still have no idea why your first video was recommended to me but I am so glad it was, every little slice of canal boating calms my day and brings back my childhood dreams (after reading Swallows and Amazons) of a life on a boat, Thank you for an interesting video.
Betty, all your videos are just beautful calming realities of boatlife - I do love how you are pushing through your natural shyness - as that's how I would be in the exact same way - but you should know it comes across as absolutely genuine and sincere, and the times like pointing out the horse - you get a glimpse of you more relaxed and possibly your sense of humour - just keep at it - you will get so natural with the camera - you're doing it! And you're doing brilliantly :D
Hello Betty another great video very informative delivered very well with innocence I love the canals always hummed and arred weather to take plunge I lived around Burton upon trent for few years loved the walks the more I watch it gets very evocative happy days safe happy cruising and mooring
I love your videos Betty. It's a beautiful pace you cruise at and you can see so much more on your travels. The weather has been appalling and it's lovely to see the sun shine again. Thank you for taking us with you again and showing us the ropes.
Thank you Betty. Had a stressful day today but watching this at the end of the day has helped me to relax. Your boat seems to have a mind of her own wanting to drift off the moment you jump off.
Brilliant video, no doubt you will get lots of advice from people who have and have not ever done this. One thing I used to do in locks was just take the rope round the bollard once, and then lay the rope stretched towards which gates I was working. The idea being if I needed to pull on it I could, or if I needed to loosen it at least the end of the rope was by me and I got good at flicking it to remove pressure ( this was on a grp wide river locks btw nothing as fancy as a narrowboat ) . You can grab a cheap long handled paint roller, throw the roller part and turn the rest into a hook so you can grab the loop of your chains from below the pilings. Useful when the nettles start to come out and long wet grass. I like your attitude, no rush and move in the dry when possible. Remember you do not have to move your boat in severe weather ( not just ice ) so in weather warnings consider if it is safer to email CRT for an overstay as a single boater.
Ah yes, the perils of nettles! I've been known to get my scissors out and start snipping them! I also accidentally disturbed a wasps' nest last year and got stung lots of times, so a hook would definitely have been useful then!
Nice to see another video from you Betty and how nice of you to help the lady viewer out by showing her how you moor your boat. Great little video hope to see some more of you in the summer months 👏👏👏👍
Hi Betty, On a windy day tie the centre line roughly around the cross beam on the bank as soon as you get off - the boat will sit close to the bank while you moor up 😉
Hi Betty, nice to see you back again. Lovely video and a beautiful cruise down the canal, at least you had a beautiful day for it. Take care until next time safe boating.
Like everyone else I really enjoyed the country views on this one. Hopefully the weather is going to pick up now and we can all get out and about. I've never used a chain when boating, the hire companies only seem to put pins in their boats, got to admit chains look a lot more secure than pins. Thanks for another lovely video.
I think you're right actually because I hired a couple of boats before I got mine and they only gave us mooring pins and nappy pins. I definitely prefer chains.

Another little gem of a video with you and Little One. As a non boater I never thought a narrowboat could and would wander off if unattended! I think you've got the right idea though. If the weather is bad, or the canal is super busy, just moor up and wait. Why rush? Well deserved on your 10k subscribers. We're really enjoying being guests on board. Thanks Betty and bring on the next instalment!
Thankyou for having perfect boating morals ❤ You surely are an inspiration for both new and old boaters of the right way to be on the cut !. Tying ropes I always say use one hand ! If ya can't do and undo your rope with one hand ul not be able to undo it in an emergency ... Navy officer taught me that on my first week on the cut some 19 years ago . Nice to see your media confidence improving ! What a star ❤

That barrier at the side of the canal is called Arm-co and pilings is pronounced pile-ings I wouldn't say anything usually but you aren't going to want to live on a boat for years before someone says something, love the videos
You know that feeling you get when you're just taking a summer stroll in the sun with the smell of freshly cut grass on the breeze and it feels like everything is right with the world for those precious moments? Same feeling watching Betty on a boat. Does my ptsd a world of good. Thank you from the bottom of my heart ❤️ Betty.
@@kevinsaunby982 oh I understand now 🤦♂️, we have the same on some canals & riverbanks here in Scotland, we call them piles, it’s the pile driver remark that sunk in (pardon the pun), I remember the old pile drivers that was basically a big crane hoisted a massive metal weight up & dropped it at freefall to knock them in it took forever, nowadays they have big hydraulic machines that rattle them in a lot faster, both make a terrible racket though 😂
How come speeding cyclists have only ever shouted at me to get out the way when I’m mooring? Maybe being a 50 year old guy goes against me getting any help😂😂
It seems everyone is thinking of upping sticks and moving onto the canals ,thinking its cheap living and freedom ,,having had 2 i wouldn't have another given free its none stop stress 24 hrs a day 😢and expensive
I spent 10 years living on a boat and, I agree, it's not cheap. Had I kept my investment in bricks and mortar I would be a good 100k better off now. On the other side of the coin I spent 10 years out in nature made more friends than I can count and lived the ultimate chilled out life
No need for the background music, it's better to listen to the sound of the countryside or no artificial noise, apart from it being annoying, the rest of your adventures are very good
I guess you don't hear the sound of the countryside because of the engine noise. It's annoying to hear the monotone sound of the engine during the video.
For me (so it's my personal opinion), there's the music, the engine sound, and the talking - all at the same time. But this is a nice channel in it's early days and I fully support the success of Betty on a Boat.
Hi Betty..I have only today come across ur Vlogs & RUclips Channel.#now subscribed...For many years now I have thought of how a"Narrowboat"life woupd be but have always quickly dissuaded myself due to realisstion how hard it would be to manage a 1 man crew.......U definetly are an inspiration-u have rekindled my thoughts of how life with narrowboat could be....thanks for that, keep cruising, keep posting😊
Ah thank you, it's nice that your think I'm an inspiration! I don't think handling the boat on my own is hugely more difficult than being a two-man crew, but I do find boat problems and generally worrying about things going wrong to be more of a burden.
G'day from Australia . Good to meet you Betty and follow your adventure on the UK canals. If you do not know, there is no canal system in Australia. I follow several UK boaters here on RUclips. What an amazing way to life and travel. One day I will get to the UK and give this a go.
I worry about you. An attractive lady alone in the middle of nowhere at times. The guy on the bike offering to help could come back later and, well I'm sure you know what. Get yourself a bloody big Alsatian dog or a gun. The Alsatian is probably the more sensible route.
I think he seemed OK but I have been known to move the boat in the past when I've had a bad feeling about people. I am thinking about getting a dog though!

Nice that you share your journey as a novice owner - I'm sure many would be too nervous at the beginning ;)
There's something about the cut and the slower pace of life that I also found so magical back when I enjoyed time on our 45ft ex-hire boat which I spent a long time converting so that my disabled dad could get to use it despite mobility issues, but that's the magic of having such a narrow cabin!
Pete
Hi Pete, thanks for your message and I hope the videos have brought back some nice memories for you!
Thank you, I'm glad my videos are bringing back happy memories!
Thanks!
Thank you, this is a really nice comment! It’s nice to know I’ve inspired you to read up on canals and narrowboats!
Possibly the most relaxing videos on RUclips. Should be prescribed to relieve stress 👍🏼
Ha, thank you - driving the boat relaxes me too!
I’ve watched a number of canal dwellers/travellers and can’t help thinking, canal life should be put on prescription as a way of de-stressing and learning a new pace of life.
Thank you for taking us along and sharing a snippet of your life 🙂
As I get older I'm realising that being in nature makes me feel a lot happier. I think nature should be prescribed!
There is something wonderfully naive and sweet about you and your videos. It's compulsive viewing. I wish you the very best for the future and look forward to watching the channel grow.
Thank you! 🙂
I love watching your boating videos. I used to watch loads but just don’t get the time these days, but your channel is one of the few non-boating fitout videos I now regularly watch. I will try and remember that know for when I am eventually on the water.
Thank you, that’s really nice to know and I hope they’re useful!
What a lovely person you are.Thank you for posting Betty.😊
Thank you! 😀
Hi Betty, lovely to see you again. Really enjoyed your video. Thank you. 👌❤️
Thanks for watching again!
Really good to see straight away how far your 'presence' has come in just a few short videos. So much more relaxed and natural. Well done!
Thank you! I think the nice weather helped with this one as it made me feel happier and more relaxed. I did record an intro for this one before I started cruising and it wasn't very good, then once I was cruising along I felt a lot more comfortable so I decided to give it another go!
Thankyou, I’ve had a hard stressful day at work, but watching your video cruising along has a really relaxing effect 😊
That's great, I'm really glad the video has had a positive effect! ☺
Ditto 👍
Lovely channel and very relaxed feel. None of the usual false you tuber 'polish' which is appreciated. I enjoy the wholesome feel when I watch your videos so keep it up and don't change 🙂
Thank you! I’m just going to keep doing them and see what happens!
I've realised I much prefer moving the boat when there aren't as many people around! I'm glad you found it relaxing. ☺
@@bettyonaboat I’m so happy for you ☺️
I'd love this lifestyle, one day ill have it, in the meantime ive got your videos to watch so keep them coming 🙂🛥
Thank you, that’s really kind! Sorry for not replying sooner - I’m still getting the hang of RUclips and have only just seen this.
@@bettyonaboat Don't worry about it! 👍🏼
Just found your lovely videos - and your hint of accent makes them even better!
Thank you, I'm glad it was recommended to you too! 🙂
Thanks Betty. Feeling super relaxed after watching you being so calm and collected whilst cruising the canal
Thank you, I'm glad you find it relaxing!
Betty, I housebound now so it nice watch your video. It look like such beautiful scenery. Thank for sharing ❤
Thank you, I'm glad you're enjoying them!
Who'd have thought that watching a narrow boat glide along would be so relaxing. Nice videos Betty.👏
Thank you, I’m glad you find the videos relaxing! 🙂
You have the most calming and relaxing voice. Love your videos.
Thank you! 🙂
Thank you! 😊
Thank you Betty for another lovely video from a fellow brummie. Doing what you like is freedom. Liking what you do is happiness.
Thank you, they're good words to live by!
Hello Betty another great video very informative delivered very well with innocence I love the canals always hummed and arred weather to take plunge I lived around Burton upon trent for few years loved the walks the more I watch it gets very evocative happy days safe happy cruising and mooring
There are some lovely walks around there, especially by the river! I'm glad you're enjoying the videos.
It's always a delight when one of your videos drops - thank you for sharing your joy in narrowboating ❤
Thank you, that's really nice of you to say! ☺
I love your videos Betty. It's a beautiful pace you cruise at and you can see so much more on your travels. The weather has been appalling and it's lovely to see the sun shine again. Thank you for taking us with you again and showing us the ropes.
I was literally showing you the ropes this time! Thank you for watching. ☺
Thank you Betty. Had a stressful day today but watching this at the end of the day has helped me to relax. Your boat seems to have a mind of her own wanting to drift off the moment you jump off.
Thank you, that's really nice to hear!
Hi Betty. Thanks for another few minutes of peace and tranquility...also some mooring techniques.
Love your videos.
Thank you! 🙂
@@bettyonaboat The ones for the back of radiators work a treat, get the cheapest one.
Nice to see another video from you Betty and how nice of you to help the lady viewer out by showing her how you moor your boat. Great little video hope to see some more of you in the summer months 👏👏👏👍
I hope she ends up watching the video, but I thought it might help other people too. Thanks for watching!
Hi Betty, On a windy day tie the centre line roughly around the cross beam on the bank as soon as you get off - the boat will sit close to the bank while you moor up 😉
Thank you, that's a good tip!
Hi Betty, nice to see you back again. Lovely video and a beautiful cruise down the canal, at least you had a beautiful day for it. Take care until next time safe boating.
Thank you, yes, it was lovely that day and made me feel really happy!
I could just sense a tiny bit of west midlands accent but you sound very nice. Thank you for your advice and help.
I'm from Wolverhampton originally but haven't lived there for over a decade so my accent isn't as strong as it used to be. Thank you for watching. 🙂
@@bettyonaboat Actually very pleasant to listen to.

Betty... a breath of fresh air on youtube... and that Brummie accent ! Takes me back to my time at college in the midlands.

You're really getting the hang of this vlog business. I can tell you're feeling more confident talking to the camera. Great work.
I do feel more confident as I do more! 😀
Hi Betty! Good to see you still boating! I love the name of your boat "Little One" - Just to echo another comment; there is something wonderfully naive and sweet about you and your videos. They are certainly a great antidote to general life these days, able to relieve stress, plus we get to go boating from the comfort of our arm chairs! I wish you the best and will keep on watching your wonderfully sweet adventures.

Great vlog Betty, how come you look so glamorous 😍😂, i aways wear my sweatpants (usually with dog paw marks on) and naff but warm jacket, maybe wellies 😂🤦🏻♂️
These are wellies! They're welly boots. I used to mostly wear leggings then my parents told me I looked like a scruffbag!
In just a few episodes you've come on leaps and bounds with you content and presentation, well done. All those nerves you had on Vlog 1 have almost drifted away.
I've realised I feel more comfortable talking to the camera when I'm driving the boat rather than standing/sitting somewhere. I'm not sure why! 😄
As a caravaner, I understand your frustration . At doing it alone. But hey ho. We get strength from it. Brilliant content.
Thank you, I'm glad you like the videos so far!
Don’t really have canals in western States USA love to see your videos and the music is wonderful thank you ❤❤❤❤ please raise your camera’s height like to see where you are going.

You surely are an inspiration for both new and old boaters of the right way to be on the cut !.
Tying ropes I always say use one hand !
If ya can't do and undo your rope with one hand ul not be able to undo it in an emergency ...
Navy officer taught me that on my first week on the cut some 19 years ago .

That barrier at the side of the canal is called Arm-co and pilings is pronounced pile-ings
I wouldn't say anything usually but you aren't going to want to live on a boat for years before someone says something, love the videos
Ah thank you, I suspected I was pronouncing it wrong so that's why I wrote about it in the video description! I'm glad you're enjoying the videos. 🙂
You know that feeling you get when you're just taking a summer stroll in the sun with the smell of freshly cut grass on the breeze and it feels like everything is right with the world for those precious moments? Thank you for your service, John. All the best from 🇩🇰
Thank you, that’s so nice to hear!
Just for your information, the metal sides of the canal are called pile-ings not pill-ings. Love your boat x
Yes I think you're right about the pronunciation! It annoys me that I've said it wrong repeatedly in this video!
Well I’ve never heard of them no matter what you call em so that’s me learned something! Don’t get annoyed you’re doing great 👍
Most of us just call it Armco, because that's what it is.
Armco is the horizontal metal - pilings (“pie-lings”) are the verticals driven in by a pile driver.
Nice work Betty & it shows with huge viewing figures! I stopped watching boat videos but came across your channel & really like it.
Thank you, it’s nice to know you enjoy the channel!

Thank you, I’ve posted another video since this one!
It seems everyone is thinking of upping sticks and moving onto the canals ,thinking its cheap living and freedom ,,having had 2 i wouldn't have another given free its none stop stress 24 hrs a day 😢and expensive
I agree! I personally don't think it's a cheaper way of living, unless you live somewhere like London, and it can be stressful when things go wrong.
I spent 10 years living on a boat and, I agree, it's not cheap. Had I kept my investment in bricks and mortar I would be a good 100k better off now. On the other side of the coin I spent 10 years out in nature made more friends than I can count and lived the ultimate chilled out life
Such a beautiful day, thank you for bringing us along and showing us how to tie up.
Thank you for joining me! 🙂
No need for the background music, it's better to listen to the sound of the countryside or no artificial noise, apart from it being annoying, the rest of your adventures are very good
I guess you don't hear the sound of the countryside because of the engine noise. It's annoying to hear the monotone sound of the engine during the video.
Neither are annoying.
I vehemently disagree 👎😼
For me (so it's my personal opinion), there's the music, the engine sound, and the talking - all at the same time.
But this is a nice channel in it's early days and I fully support the success of Betty on a Boat.
There are more things in life to stress about.

Yes you should visit and hire a narrowboat for a bit! I'd love to see what canals in other countries are like actually.
