How I moor my narrowboat as a solo boater

- For this video I thought I'd respond to a question that someone asked me after watching one of my previous videos. It's all about how I moor my narrowboat, which is a bit more difficult when you're on your own.
By the way, I think I pronounce "pilings" wrong in this video. I've only ever seen the word written down so I don't know how to pronounce it.
Anyway, I hope people find this video useful!
#narrowboating #narrowboat #boating
Stress, blood pressure and everything instantly back to "absolute peace and harmony" over here in Norway. Thank you, Betty.
Thank you, that's nice to hear! ☺
There is a really relaxing tone and pace to your videos. Still, I would love to hear more about what you like/love about narrowboating.
don't you get scared, travelling on your own. Steve Wolverhampton
Thanks
My parents have had 3 narrowboats over the last 30-odd years and recently sold their last one which was on the Ashby. Watching your videos has brought tons of good memories flooding back. Keep doing what you do, stay safe and enjoy. The format is perfect.
Thank you, that’s so kind of you!! I hope to go on the Ashby canal at some point in future. I’m glad the videos are bringing back good memories for you. 😀
You have the ability to make people feel so relaxed and chilled. This is one of my favourite channels on YT.
Aww thank you, that's so nice to hear! 😀
Every time you release a video I get to ride on a canal boat for a few minutes. Slows my life down a little. I love it. Thanks!
Aww that's nice to hear! ☺
If you cleat the mooring line 3 times (figures of 8) there is no need for knots. Quicker to release/ adjust if necessary. Spring lines fore and aft will keep the boat in position and close to the bank. From a tidal sailor . Nice clear and relaxed video.
Thank you, I'll give that a go!
@@bettyonaboat O X X O if it helps to remember :) around, figure of eight, figure of eight, around once more. Have to agree with everyone else, I loved how chilled out canal boating is. Mooring a fin keel 35ft sailboat can be a tense ten minutes! Keep the content coming. Safe passage, good watch
Oh yes another little slice of calm from Betty, interesting and so nice and chilled, thanks Betty 🙂
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! ☺
Yes she is so natural and authentic, a lovely change. The scenery (and horse) are fantastic.
I love your channel. Nothing false or pretentious, straight from the heart. Honest and true...how refreshing. Thank you X
Thank you, I'm glad you like it!
Loved when you spotted the horse and excitedly showed it to us all, and your nervous wave at the people on the bridge Your shy, natural disposition is a breath of fresh air, Delightful to watch your adventures.
😂 I really love animals and I had spotted the horse before but wasn't sure whether to say anything or not!
@@bettyonaboat "Hello horse"
@@bettyonaboat 😄I think 10,000 of us are quite glad you did say it. I, for one, adore how you leave the 'awkward' moments in. So nice to see a real person amongst the pretentious 'influencers' here. Keep it up Betty.
@@PostalPaulyShredzshe's adorable! I love her quirky nature and her delivery in these videos. A man can fall in love with such beauty ya know! 😊
Thank you Betty. What I like about you is how natural you are with no pretext.
Thank you, that's kind of you to say!
Just to get technical for a minute... On top of the fact that I really enjoy the boating content of your videos, and I know nothing about narrow-boating, your video production and editing is also very good. I did live sound production for nearly 25 years, and while many others on this platform go from blasting my ears with an extremely boring 'hammering nails in the garden shed music (??) overlay, to being almost inaudible when they speak to the camera, you've got the sound balance just right, so well done for that too. I know that's not easy. Stay safe out there Betty, and happy cruising.
Thank you, that's great to hear given your background in sound production! Sound levels are a difficult balance. I'm never quite sure how loud to have the music, for example.
Just enjoy the video .
@@barados2006 Please don't be so narky. Betty obviously appreciated my complementing her video and sound production. I enjoy all of Betty's videos.
Hello Betty,, Do you have to pay a fee to use the locks or moor the boat, do you live on it? I don't mean to nosey. We have nothing like that here in Texas.
Towards some boating gloves or other items. Thank you for sharing peace and tranquility.🥰😊
Thank you very much, I'll put it towards my maintenance! 😀
I have only found your channel today. A lady tells us properly what she is doing and the reason. No pretentious attitude and great explanation so I have Subscribed and will follow you. Can I just say if it were pillings there would be two ll's but one means its pile as carpet pile. What I have seen boaters call it Armco like in motorsport racing. You ar a brave lady and have my fullest respect!
Yes I realised I’d got the pronunciation wrong shortly after making this! I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos. 🙂
When you step off the stern with the centre line, take a pin and hammer, and tie the centreline down. Saves you from running back and forth pulling the boat back in...😊. Off course, after you have secured the bow and stern lines, you untie and retrieve the centre line and mooring pin. Never moor a boat with the centre line....
As Crissecorr mentioned elsewhere, you should use a simple 'figure of eight' to secure the mooring line. You should really never tie knots in lines, in case they either need to be released fast, or ths knot gets to tight to undo (ever tried to untie a frozen knot?😂). Bringing the line back to the boat is absolutly the best practice, and to finish it off, a simple figure of eight on a cleat (like the bow), or two half turns on a post, finished with the rest of the line neatly coiled next to it.
We need moor of this content.
😂 Was this an intentional pun?
I'd say more of everything 😊
Hahaha that is so so so funny 😂
HA!
My wife and I discovered your videos and your channel this week. We are tearing through them so do please make more! 😉 We have loved your initial awkwardness with the videos, so sweet and endearing. Thank you for the peaceful vibe of your videos. Cheers!
Thank you, I'm glad you're enjoying them! I do plan to make more, even if they're a bit sporadic!
Hi from Australia. We may have nice surf beaches and boating here, but I think your life on the water there is one to be envied. What a beautiful part of the world, thanks for sharing it.
Thanks for watching! I love being by water in general so I bet your surf beaches are beautiful too.
Don’t know what else to add from all the other comments. What an absolute joy to watch. Really enjoy your vlogs.
Thank you, it's really nice to know that people are enjoying the videos so much! 😀
This has got to be the most stress less, calming and utterly satisfying canal boat video I’ve seen in a long while. Well done Betty great video, more of these please. x
Aww thank you, that's really nice to hear! 🙂
Possibly the most relaxing videos on RUclips. Should be prescribed to relieve stress 👍🏼
Ha, thank you - driving the boat relaxes me too!
I enjoyed sharing your life on your boat, Something that I can't do now I am living in Canada. Half the fun is learning how to do new things. Great to see you using a long centre line, so many people get into trouble jumping off with a bow or stern line. I did cringe when I saw you tying the mooring line with so many knots. Never tie knots in a mooring line! you never know when you may want to release it quickly. Simply one wrap round the cleat and cross over and back over to form an X turning the last loop over. This shows other boaters that you are a real boater!
Thanks for another great video Betty. You are a real natural and a pleasure to watch and listen to.
Thank you, I'm glad you're enjoying the videos so far! 😀
A horse and he was wearing a blankie! Cute :)
You never know what you're going to see while you're cruising around!
Another nice video Betty, thank you. It's nice to see it starting to green up there. It is here too. And it's been nice enough to plant a few vegetables in the garden. I love this time of year!
Cheers!
Mike from Canada
I do love seeing all of the animals as I cruise along! I've been sowing a few vegetable seeds myself so I might put the plants on my roof soon.
@@bettyonaboat Indeed! That's one of my favourite things about watching your videos. The countryside is just stunning. I'd love to do what you're doing but living in Canada makes it rather hard Lol
What did you plant? It should be warm enough now although maybe a risk of frost still but easy enough to cover up.
You have the most calming and relaxing voice. Love your videos.
Thank you! 🙂
Like everyone else I really enjoyed the country views on this one. Hopefully the weather is going to pick up now and we can all get out and about. I've never used a chain when boating, the hire companies only seem to put pins in their boats, got to admit chains look a lot more secure than pins. Thanks for another lovely video.
I think you're right actually because I hired a couple of boats before I got mine and they only gave us mooring pins and nappy pins. I definitely prefer chains.

Lovely channel and very relaxed feel. None of the usual false you tuber 'polish' which is appreciated. I enjoy the wholesome feel when I watch your videos so keep it up and don't change 🙂
Thank you! I’m just going to keep doing them and see what happens!
Hi Betty, On a windy day tie the centre line roughly around the cross beam on the bank as soon as you get off - the boat will sit close to the bank while you moor up 😉
Thank you, that's a good tip!
So glad that I stumbled upon your "less than 4mph adventures," Betty. You're a "cut" above the rest. Happy cruisin' young lady, and thanks for the video.
Ha, thank you!
hi betty 😁 another awesome installment in your narrowboat adventure for us all to enjoy thank you! and it's nice to see you growing in confidence due to the very positive feedback from your thousands of fans around the world :) you deserve every bit of it! 🤗
Thank you, I do feel more confident as I do more, which can only be a good thing! 😀
Hi, love your videos, please may I suggest that if your boat is facing into the wind to get a headrope secured first with a mooring stake or a large hook into the bank, (something like a bale hook) that will keep the bow secured allowing you to tend to the other lines. Another way is to use a forespring, a longer line with a hook on the end that you could chuck out from the cockpit, once that's secured to the bank, leave the engine on slow ahead with the tiller slightly to starboard to keep the stern in whilst you nip ashore and secure the other lines in your own time, best wishes, Rickx
Thank you Betty for another lovely video from a fellow brummie. Doing what you like is freedom. Liking what you do is happiness.
Thank you, they're good words to live by!
Hi Betty 😊 thank you for taking us on a lovely trip on your boat ⛵👍
Thank you for joining me!
I still have no idea why your first video was recommended to me but I am so glad it was, every little slice of canal boating calms my day and brings back my childhood dreams (after reading Swallows and Amazons) of a life on a boat, Thank you for an interesting video.
Thank you, I'm glad it was recommended to you too! 🙂
Nice one on this rainy evening interesting to see you moor up. I have a navy book I think it is with all the knots they use on their old boats how to splice a rope together and make loops etc Lovely to see you enjoying yourself in a peaceful way Betty.
You probably know more about knots than I do then - I'm certainly no expert! I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
Thank you Betty. Had a stressful day today but watching this at the end of the day has helped me to relax. Your boat seems to have a mind of her own wanting to drift off the moment you jump off.
Thank you, that's really nice to hear!
I can just about tie my own shoe laces Betty so I would just be useless excess weight on any boat. I hope the person who asked about tying stuff watched this and learned something. Very endearing vid Betty, I wish you continued happiness and success.
Yes, I hope she watches the video too! But even if she doesn't it might help some other people. Thank you for the good wishes! ☺
There is something wonderfully naive and sweet about you and your videos. It's compulsive viewing. I wish you the very best for the future and look forward to watching the channel grow.
Thank you! 🙂
I hope a helpful suggestion for when you first go ashore with the centre line: 08.00 on - take a chain with you and make that your first, if only temporary, tie-up of the rope back on itself, by the middle of the boat. Gives you full control of the boat throughout, avoiding it floating away and you having to dash back to catch it! Then you can do the stern and bow chains confident of the boat's stable position. Hope it works for you.
Ah yes, a few people have suggested this so I think I'll give it a go, especially when it's windy!
Thank you for this week’s video, Betty. I enjoyed the lesson and I always love the few calm minutes that you spend with us. Have a wonderful week ahead.
Thank you, I hope you have a wonderful week too!
Betty, all your videos are just beautful calming realities of boatlife - I do love how you are pushing through your natural shyness - as that's how I would be in the exact same way - but you should know it comes across as absolutely genuine and sincere, and the times like pointing out the horse - you get a glimpse of you more relaxed and possibly your sense of humour - just keep at it - you will get so natural with the camera - you're doing it! And you're doing brilliantly :D
Thank you! 😊
What a lovely person you are.Thank you for posting Betty.😊
Thank you! 😀
I’m hoping to retire in a few years , and have been watching lots of Narrowboat vids to see as an alternative lifestyle whilst doing it alone …and you make it look so calming … good on you for making this channel so refreshing Betty … take care
To be honest it's not always calming as things sometimes go wrong! There's no harm in giving it a go though. I'm glad you enjoy the channel and I hope you like my future videos!
Thankyou, I’ve had a hard stressful day at work, but watching your video cruising along has a really relaxing effect 😊
That's great, I'm really glad the video has had a positive effect! ☺
Ditto 👍
Who'd have thought that watching a narrow boat glide along would be so relaxing. Nice videos Betty.👏
Thank you, I’m glad you find the videos relaxing! 🙂
Brilliant video, no doubt you will get lots of advice from people who have and have not ever done this. One thing I used to do in locks was just take the rope round the bollard once, and then lay the rope stretched towards which gates I was working. The idea being if I needed to pull on it I could, or if I needed to loosen it at least the end of the rope was by me and I got good at flicking it to remove pressure ( this was on a grp wide river locks btw nothing as fancy as a narrowboat ) . You can grab a cheap long handled paint roller, throw the roller part and turn the rest into a hook so you can grab the loop of your chains from below the pilings. Useful when the nettles start to come out and long wet grass. I like your attitude, no rush and move in the dry when possible. Remember you do not have to move your boat in severe weather ( not just ice ) so in weather warnings consider if it is safer to email CRT for an overstay as a single boater.
Ah yes, the perils of nettles! I've been known to get my scissors out and start snipping them! I also accidentally disturbed a wasps' nest last year and got stung lots of times, so a hook would definitely have been useful then!
@@bettyonaboat The ones for the back of radiators work a treat, get the cheapest one.
You make navigating look you easy... just staying in the middle seems like a task lol. I'm sure with time things come together as one gains experience. Love your narrow boat, it's so cute! I must also say the backup music tracks are very nice as well...
Thx so much for sharing!
Thank you for watching! ☺ To be honest I don't think it is very hard once you get the hang of it, but let's pretend it is difficult so that makes me look better!
You're really getting the hang of this vlog business. I can tell you're feeling more confident talking to the camera. Great work.
I do feel more confident as I do more! 😀
Its been a pleasure to watch your films this last few months. I do actually find the lifestyle very calming and appealing. You have given me hope. Charles . Bless you. x
Betty, I housebound now so it nice watch your video. It look like such beautiful scenery. Thank for sharing ❤
Thank you, I'm glad you're enjoying them!
Nicely done. I think you got it all figured out.
An idea for you to kick around I know it’s not a traditional setup, get Bimini top for the back deck if you cruise in not so good weather you could stay dry and it wouldn’t take much to fold it up again for a low bridge or tunnel. Plus it would make get in and out in rainy weather a bit nicer
I adore the freedom of canal cruising ❤ get nervous too when too many people are around. Loving your cure boat, not too noisy and calmer sunny weather 🤗 Just so relaxing betty without noisy speedboat show offs ☺️ horses are so elegant 😌 great insight again on using canals safety 🫶🏼

G'day from Australia . Good to meet you Betty and follow your adventure on the UK canals. If you do not know, there is no canal system in Australia. I follow several UK boaters here on RUclips. What an amazing way to life and travel. One day I will get to the UK and give this a go.
Yes you should visit and hire a narrowboat for a bit! I'd love to see what canals in other countries are like actually.
So nice to see you again. I had a holiday in a narrow boat many years ago on the Oxford Canal. Your videos bring back many happy memories. As others have commented your natural style of presenting is really nice and I enjoy seeing you. Please keep em coming!

Just found your lovely videos - and your hint of accent makes them even better!
Ha, thank you! My accent isn't as strong as it used to be as I'm moved around a bit as an adult. I saw my dad on Saturday though so I went full-on Wolverhampton again.
@@bettyonaboat Yeah, I love different accents and it's amazing how people soon drop into 'full on' again when talking with people from their original area. Mine's 'moderated' Yorkshire after travelling around, but soon gets a lot stronger when I'm back with old school friends! I'm looking forward to watching more of your really nicely produced videos - what a great life!
When I first put the marina behind me, I stuck to tick-over religiously when passing moored boats. But then I found that other boats would tend to catch me up, get frustrated then try to overtake later. After speaking to other boaters, the consensus is that "tick-over and a bit" is OK in most situations. For my engine, tick-over is 700rpm but I'll now speed up to about 1000rpm unless I'm passing boats that are tying up or casting off, or I have to pass very closely. If I can see a boat on very loose moorings, I'll slow back down to tick-over again.
It's always a delight when one of your videos drops - thank you for sharing your joy in narrowboating ❤
Thank you, that's really nice of you to say! ☺
I love watching your boating videos. I used to watch loads but just don’t get the time these days, but your channel is one of the few non-boating fitout videos I now regularly watch. I will try and remember that know for when I am eventually on the water.
Thank you, that’s really nice to know and I hope they’re useful!
Always great to watch you Betty and see how your travels continue. I hope you are managing to sort out your 'spongy' cabin floor. It would be interesting to know a bit of your history, why you decided to to buy your boat, what your long term plans are and do you do remote work etc to finance your new life....
I'm planning to talk more about all of this in future videos but I do have a full-time job and I do mostly work remotely, which is fortunate, as I used to work in an office every day before the pandemic. I'll do a DIY update too!
Congrats on the 10k keep on keeping on we love you 😘

Haha, what can I say? I like horses! 🐴
That barrier at the side of the canal is called Arm-co and pilings is pronounced pile-ings
I wouldn't say anything usually but you aren't going to want to live on a boat for years before someone says something, love the videos
Ah thank you, I suspected I was pronouncing it wrong so that's why I wrote about it in the video description! I'm glad you're enjoying the videos. 🙂
Another enjoyable vlog, too old now, but I often wonder what it would be like to live on the canal, watching your and other canal vloggers, I think I would have loved it. 🤗👍
It's not too late! Maybe you could hire a narrowboat for a holiday to see if you like it?
Just for your information, the metal sides of the canal are called pile-ings not pill-ings. Love your boat x
Yes I think you're right about the pronunciation! It annoys me that I've said it wrong repeatedly in this video!
Well I’ve never heard of them no matter what you call em so that’s me learned something! Don’t get annoyed you’re doing great 👍
Most of us just call it Armco, because that's what it is.
Armco is the horizontal metal - pilings (“pie-lings”) are the verticals driven in by a pile driver.
@@kevinsaunby982 oh I understand now 🤦♂️, we have the same on some canals & riverbanks here in Scotland, we call them piles, it’s the pile driver remark that sunk in (pardon the pun), I remember the old pile drivers that was basically a big crane hoisted a massive metal weight up & dropped it at freefall to knock them in it took forever, nowadays they have big hydraulic machines that rattle them in a lot faster, both make a terrible racket though 😂
I have just found your channel Betty and I have to say how enjoyable I find your videos so much so that I've liked and subscribed. They are both informative and very well put together so I hope there are more to come in the near future.
Thank you for subscribing and I'm glad you find the videos informative. I should hopefully be posting the next one at 6pm on Wednesday!
‘Horse’s arse… horse’s arse… horse’s arse…horse’s arse!” Jim Royle 😝🤭😉
I’ve watched a number of canal dwellers/travellers and can’t help thinking, canal life should be put on prescription as a way of de-stressing and learning a new pace of life.
Thank you for taking us along and sharing a snippet of your life 🙂
As I get older I'm realising that being in nature makes me feel a lot happier. I think nature should be prescribed!
How come speeding cyclists have only ever shouted at me to get out the way when I’m mooring? Maybe being a 50 year old guy goes against me getting any help😂😂
Haha! 😂
Because you haven’t leathered them with a mooring pin yet and got yourself the stay well clear reputation lol!
what a lovely sweet person you are Betty ❤
I love the way you explain things , Betty. Simple and to the point. Your videos would be excellent for people thinking of living or taking a holiday in a canal boat. They are also very relaxing ! Thank you.
I do hope they're helpful to people! I think people who live on boats themselves probably know all this stuff already, so I think my videos are probably more useful to hire boaters or people starting out!
No need for the background music, it's better to listen to the sound of the countryside or no artificial noise, apart from it being annoying, the rest of your adventures are very good
I guess you don't hear the sound of the countryside because of the engine noise. It's annoying to hear the monotone sound of the engine during the video.
Neither are annoying.
I vehemently disagree 👎😼
For me (so it's my personal opinion), there's the music, the engine sound, and the talking - all at the same time.
But this is a nice channel in it's early days and I fully support the success of Betty on a Boat.
There are more things in life to stress about.
Great video Betty, keep them going.
I’ve gotta say I envy you. It’s something I’d love to do, I’m just not quite as brave as you are. Unfortunately I’m a city boy that’s a country boy at heart.. I would not have a clue, apart from dropping a fishing rod over the side (reminiscing of my childhood on the canal) I have learned more in a couple of hours of binge watching your videos than I’ve ever known about canals and long boating though.. looking forward to more content so I can at least be there in spirit, if not in person.. you provide me with an escape from the city life I want no part of... keep up the fantastic work. You’re very genuine and down to earth..
I've lived in towns/cities for most of my life but the great thing about canals is that you can feel like you're in the countryside even when you're not. I'm not sure which bit of the country you live in but I would say find the nearest canal or river and go for a walk along it, or maybe even go for a walk around a big reservoir. Spending time around bodies of water is meant to be therapeutic, and I've found it is for me.
It seems everyone is thinking of upping sticks and moving onto the canals ,thinking its cheap living and freedom ,,having had 2 i wouldn't have another given free its none stop stress 24 hrs a day 😢and expensive
I agree! I personally don't think it's a cheaper way of living, unless you live somewhere like London, and it can be stressful when things go wrong.
I spent 10 years living on a boat and, I agree, it's not cheap. Had I kept my investment in bricks and mortar I would be a good 100k better off now. On the other side of the coin I spent 10 years out in nature made more friends than I can count and lived the ultimate chilled out life
In just a few episodes you've come on leaps and bounds with you content and presentation, well done. All those nerves you had on Vlog 1 have almost drifted away.
I've realised I feel more comfortable talking to the camera when I'm driving the boat rather than standing/sitting somewhere. I'm not sure why! 😄
You’re very beautiful Betty

Hi! I'm not a narrow-boater, but I really enjoyed this video, thank you 😊 It looks really peaceful on the water.
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. It's not always peaceful - I got woken up at midnight on Saturday by some people having some kind of outdoor rave near where I was moored!
I worry about you. An attractive lady alone in the middle of nowhere at times. The guy on the bike offering to help could come back later and, well I'm sure you know what. Get yourself a bloody big Alsatian dog or a gun. The Alsatian is probably the more sensible route.
I think he seemed OK but I have been known to move the boat in the past when I've had a bad feeling about people. I am thinking about getting a dog though!
Hi Betty, lovely to see you again. Really enjoyed your video. Thank you. 👌❤️
Thanks for watching again!
I can only repeat /echo what has already been said here , I am loving your posts and I really feel as if I am with you chilling out on the canal without a worry or any stress. Thanks Betty and here’s to your next post ❤
Aww thank you, it's really nice for me to know that the videos are being enjoyed so much as it cheers me up too!
What a nice, quiet, peaceful time-thank you for sharing your adventure with us.
Hey Betty 👋 Thank you for showing us some of the basics in such easy and informative way. You make it all look like a breeze but I am sure it’s just your calm nature 😊 Have a blessed week 🙏❤️
It's tough to begin with but it's OK once you get the hang of it!
Your special Betty, you have a big heart and we love your videos...
Thank you, that's really kind!
It has been great to have some warmer drier weather for a change in the UK. Happy cruising ...
Yes definitely, at long last!
I just wanted to say hi from New Zealand, I was fortunate enough to spend a short time on a narrow boat last year. Love your videos, keep up the great work x
Thank you, it's really nice to know my videos are being enjoyed outside the UK! 🙂
