    This was a great video man. Some beautiful exercises put together. I really struggle getting beautiful pinch harmonics on the lower E and A string as I would on the G,B and High E. What's the "secret"? They just don't "pinch, sounds very muted.

    • @fulltimeguitar
      @fulltimeguitar 3 дня назад

      thanks so much! in theory harmonics are the same on those lower strings.. just make sure your strings arent too old, humbuckers and tone controls set for lots of trebel, plently of distortion. those lowers ones on the low strings tend to sound better with vibrato. and you could use a wha pedal for extra juice, zakk wylde style :D

    :1:15 is actually easier than you have written it... it is (2nd) 8^5^0 then (3rd) 8 and then (1st) 0 or open....you are making it harder than it needs to be... all tab books agree with the pattern I have just typed out as well. This sounds like 5-8-5-0-8 because 5 and open 1st are the same note..... lots of Eddie Van Halen's playing sounds must more complicated than it actually is...he was the master at making hard things simple and fast by using the tuning of the guitar and he even said so in several interviews ..another example is 5150 intro when he bars the pinky, making the transition to the cord shape much easier....check out the 5150 intro (very first part) and listen for the slide and you will get it.

    • @fulltimeguitar
      @fulltimeguitar 9 дней назад

      that is a legit way to play the same lick, and its gunna mean an extra picked note (no hammer-on) im not 100% sure its easier as it has a string jump (unless 3rd string 8 is a hammer from nowhere). its hard to tell now as i spent a long time practicing the way its tabbed in the video haha. i appreciate your attention to detail tho, and EVH may well have played this pattern how you've written :)

    • @kgtrains
      @kgtrains 9 дней назад

      @@fulltimeguitar true, the string jump is easier for me, but for others what you have written is also good. Same notes and all. This is what I love EVH so much... So many things he did that you discovery every time you look...the intro for 5150 blew my mind when I found out he barred the pinky and then slide from 6 to 5.. makes it so much easier to play.. I was doing it the hard way for years.

    I just came across your channel for the first time about 25 minutes ago, and having watched two instructional videos on Van Halen's technique, I must say you are an absolutely SUPERB teacher. I really like how you cover all aspects of the players approach, so it's not just a sterile 'these are the notes, this is the key, see ya', but a much more in depth WHY is he doing what he is doing, and the reasons it creates a specific FEELING over a certain musical backbone. Which is probably the most important part of what can be taught once one has the necessary level of fundamental musical theory. You are also a damn fine player when it comes to giving clear examples of what you are talking about. The reverse fingerboard view - as the player him/herself would see - is also extremely helpful. Hats off to you good sir!

    Do you have any tips for being able to increase finger dexterity? I can only manage one full repetition of the muted hammer-on part of the Rise solo before my hand starts to cramp up. I can play decently fast but just can't seem to sustain it for as long as I want Same with a lot of other Nuno solos. How does he play that fast for that long?

    • @fulltimeguitar
      @fulltimeguitar 11 дней назад

      when it comes to hammer-ons, pulloff or alternate picking, i find that practicing short bursts of notes (sometimes as few as 5 notes) builds overall speed better than endurance type exercises. Yet, after getting faster bursts, my endurance speed also improves. i talk about it more in paul gilbert video, and i'll be doing more on this so stay tuned :)

    One thing I have noticed learning this stuff, is that EVH wouldn't just pick the first note on each string for those fast runs, but would sometimes pick the first and last note on a string, only hit the first on the next and maybe all 3 notes on the next string. Those nuances are hard to hear but are sprinkled all over his solos
