Why I Intentionally Made My Bike Harder To Pedal | MTB Hack
Today we install a crank stopper on my custom-built Yeti SB165. While yes, this does intentionally make my bike harder to pedal, it is mainly intended to help me with tailwhips and other no-footed tricks. To get the crank stopper installed, we explore some solutions and then head to the hardware store to gather some supplies. With the necessary equipment to get the job done, we modify my SB165 into a tail whippin' machine. Big thanks to my friend @DavidLiebBIKE for the help figuring this hack out 🤙🏼

'Perspective' is one of my favorite videos I have had the opportunity to work on throughout my career. Originally supported by YT Industries, I created this project with my close friend Calvin Huth. Calvin is such a talented filmmaker and did a great job filming and editing this video. On top of Calvin's great work, we also had the opportunity to use a song from one of my favorite artists, Jadu...

My Top 5 Freeride MTB Lines of the Winter | POV Highlights
I bought the Kryptotals DH casing, and put the cush ultimates on, so I guess kind of overkill. But its on an ebike and i'm also 250lb. Never had any punctures either since i started on cush back in 2020.
muc off sry lube is horrible stuff. it builds up a black tar junk.
In Austria we say Pfusch
Would really like to know how you like the internal routing after awhile now. Is it worth it? My Meta V5 will be here next week.

Hi Peter, I really like your Tempo🤩. Which frame color is that? “Light Purple” or ‘Team Cloud’?
Team cloud 🤘🏼
@PeterJamison nice, thank you...i was afraid that there would be too much purple shining through...but with team cloud it only seems very subtle...think I'll go and buy one in team cloud this week 👍
You are producing awesome, informative content. I hope that you continue to find success in the biking industry and investing in your RUclips channel for the rest of us to enjoy. Keep shredding!
Appreciate the kind words! Glad you are enjoying the content, thanks for watching!
Just go faster. life-hacking your way through it is funny tho. 😊
just drill and tap a screw into the BB shell.
That works great on an aluminum frame, but pretty heinous to do on a carbon bike 😳
@PeterJamison just noticed that. oops , warranty voided 😱
What length cranks are you running?
165mm 🤙🏻
Ooo, that chain tool is nifty
It is a pretty sick one! Has spots for two quick links and doubles as a tire lever 🤙🏻
@@PeterJamison That is pretty awesome. any idea of the brand? I'll have to get one! Nice bike dude
Even with the GoPro effect, this looks terrifying
🤘🏼
Well that’s one way to wake yourself up 😂
🤟🏼
I always wondered about that in case my feet come off but so far so good my feet have stayed on 😊
Heck yeah Doug 🤘🏼
Makes sense i used to sponsor some hot shot freestyle bmx riders that rode ramp they used to run there chain super tight so the pedals would not spin in the air . Good to see some ingenuity going on nice .
Yeah that’s a nice way to do it on a hardtail since you don’t have to worry about suspension movement 🤟🏼 Unfortunately a bit more tricky on the full suspension ✌🏼
Nice video man. Very creative take to make this work. Do you ever pedal/climb this bike? Or is it basically a hike a bike?
Just hike a bike 🤟🏼 glad you enjoyed the video!
A cheap and easy tip for the Z2 bomber if you're finding the damping a bit harsh, this may also work for the Z1, is change the damper oil to a lighter weight oil, I'm 75kg and used putoline hpx r 2.5w 6.7cst fork oil, I also used three volume spacers in the air spring at 80psi, the fork feels great now, nice and supply off the top on those small fast braking bumps, and enough ramp up to prevent a harsh bottom out.
🤙🏼
Congrats on pointing out that raising the bars takes weight off the front end, generally meaning less traction while cornering, especially on flat corners, most people don't point this out, instead their only concern seems to be how well a bike handles steep tracks, also all things being equal slacker head angles also take more weight off the front end too, if you're into motorcycles think of a chopper compared to a gsxr1000 sportsbike.
🤘🏼
another cheaper option, is to use some old inner tube and a zip tie.
That works well for sure 🤙🏻 just not as easy to fine tune the tension in my experience 👍🏼
Clean solution, seen Matt jones put a ring of cut tyre between the BB and the chainring on his DJ bike, could be a solution if you need the burlier chain guide. P.s found your channel a week ago love the videos
Glad you are enjoying the videos! Thanks for watching!
Shred on! 🤘
👊🏼
awesome as always Peter xoxo
Thanks mom!
You can't call that a casual "downhill mtb pov" when it's the fuck¡ng Redbull Rampage line 😂
😂
Tightening the preload ring if you have one is another cheap option 🎉
Shimano cranks dont have one
Unfortunately Shimano cranks don’t have those, but that could work well for sram/race face!
@@PeterJamisonIt kind of has. The golden big bolt which tightens the crank spindle.
Similar system yes, but as that tightens the crank arms push against the bearings and do not gain very much added resistance, hence why I added the coupling 🤟🏼 With the coupling installed I can use the crank arm tension bolt to adjust the resistance of the cranks which is sweet 🤙🏻
Always wondered: Hey, why don't DH and Slope guys remove the cranks and put a custom piece that's essentially a peg holder in it's place. Would be kind of like a gravity powered moto bike. Part of me thinks, cool should work great, the other part says, your feet would be so close together and you wouldn't be able to rock your weight fore and aft as easy.
Yeah I feel the weight balance would be quite odd! Thanks for watching 🤟🏼
I’ve wondered this too. I think maybe to minimize the lever force, having a rotating crankset on opposite sides is easier to engineer to existing bike designs and having offset feet must help with direction on tricks I cannot do, as well as adjust the weight bias forward and rear better. Most of these guys are pedaling at some point too or in case they mess up and need to save themselves for next mandatory features
A lower chain guide can achieve the same thing with less friction
It actually doesn’t not, as explained in the video. The goal here is increased friction to get the pedals to stop spinning 🤙🏻
Nice work man, always cool to see people come up with solutions like this
Appreciate it! Love a good hack 💯 Thanks for checking out the video 🤙
@@PeterJamison send to GMBN "hack n botches" you'll get a mug and maybe a knockout for the camera 😂
You should do a video on how to make spokes and wheels strong for impact, cause that a problem I’ve had recently on my bike.
Once I am a bit more dialed with my wheel building I will for sure 🤘 Never fun having wheel problems...
You have to stomp your wheels, nah bruh like for real, STOMP, I never had a wheel explode or loosen on me following a good stress. Best wheel building vid out there for me (actually stressing the stress part) is the one Ali Clarkson made but I had some experience before...
It’s all in the stressing during wheel building. Bring up tension in spokes to the max spec for the hub/rim. Stress the wheel, repeat. Ali clarkson’s tutorial videos on wheel building recommend two stress cycles. I do it like 5 or 6 times. I’m then able to huck to flat down all the stairs within 3 miles of my house and rarely have to touch my wheels. Edit: most the $1k+ custom wheel builders have stress machines that they use

daaamn, such a good content. also surprised by you having sponsors with not so much subs, but riding is good, ngl

By the way, as you're in Utah, can't you try the place when redbull Hardline was?
Hardline is not in utah actually ✌🏼🤙🏻
@@PeterJamison My bad, Redbull rampage I meant, are you allowed to train on that place?
What diameter Turbine did you get? Also did you change the clamp? If so what size?
The stem on this bike is 35mm diameter 🤙🏼
@ I’m sorry I meant the seat post
31.6mm 🤙🏼
@@PeterJamison thanks homie

My bike loud out would be dh race bike, enduro bike, free ride bike, dirt jumper, xc race/bikepacking bike, and maybe a road

I have the same bike but have been struggling with the perfect suspension set up. I try and ride some heavier trails as well. If you wouldnt minde me asking what PSI roughly do you typically run it at for rougher trails? I'm also 5'11 I think we probably weigh very similar. Thanks!
All of my suspension details are explained in depth in this video: ruclips.net/video/FcluQETR7HA/видео.html Hope this helps you dial in your setup 🤙🏼
@ thank you!
happy to help!
Great video! Btw what camera is that at 4:14?
Glad you enjoyed it! The camera used for that shot is the GoPro Hero 12 with the Max Lens Mod 2.0, I have a video explaining my setup if you are curious: ruclips.net/video/EDGqrEjWiTo/видео.html
Thanks for the info, ill' check it out!

✨🤩👌🏻 Wow what aan amazing little yet serious business trail, enjoyed it very much, all the work put in paid off immensely, truth be said being an average rider I couldn't be hitting the biggest gaps on the trail yet it seems to me I would surely hit all the drops though🧐👍🏻🇵🇹🇳🇱🙋🏻♂️.

Saweet! Great riding on some wicked awesome trails!
Thanks for watching!
Good job 👍 you make it 🤙
🙏🏼
Did I miss it? You didn’t mention the lid!
You didn't miss it! Might be making an update to this video in the future, but for now, the lid is mostly chain lube/zip ties/scissors and other small items 👊🏼
🎉

Practicing for Red Bull rampage nice

I was watching your (made my bike harder to pedal video,)I think you might be onto something for the dirt jumping crowd. You should think about patenting the rubber device you made, you never know.
