Repairing an Atari ST with a (common?) fault
This Atari ST was sent in to me by a viewer. It booted up OK but failed to read disks. However... it's not what you're thinking, the floppy drive was fine. This was the first time I'd encountered an Atari ST with this kind of fault, and proved to be an interesting repair!

The CHEAPEST T12 soldering station VS my traditional soldering station
Просмотров 4622 месяца назад
I was sent a Quicko T12-952 soldering station by a viewer as I'd wanted to try one for ages following issues I'd had with my Yihua. The Quicko station is unbelievably cheap, even when compared to my no frills Yihua. Good job sir!
Thank you. Glad you liked it 😊
The Atari in question is mine. I would just like to say that Simon is a dream to deal with. So, so easy. He's friendly, patient, communicative, and knowledgeable. If you're thinking of getting Simon to repair your stuff, I highly recommend him.
Cannot msg you on FB. Found out if you change TR1 TR2 with a BC549C rev will make picture brighter - will let you know when I change mine.
Nice! Well done! I've had to resolder literally half a motherboard before now, the soldering was that bad!
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it. I'm glad my soldering has improved too, to at least a reasonably competent standard 😂
nice simon! do you have anymore of your old handheld electronic games? the couple videos you did awhile back were interesting!
Hi Mike, glad you liked it. Yes I've quite a few actually. I just didn't bother as not many people seemed to like them 😂. I'll do another just for you 😁
@@RetroComputingReboot thanks simon ! that means alot that you would take time to do that !
Well done! Another Atari ST with a new life. Love the feeling of getting an old computer fully functional (especially an Atari)
Thank you. I'm glad you liked it 😊
Well done diagnosing and repairing the ST. Spookily, I just purchased a "working" STE, received it today and am just about to test it.
Thanks John. Fingers crossed with the STE. I've a couple of them, a 520 and a 1040.
@@RetroComputingReboot So far so good. I loaded a game from disk ......and it works! Can't seem to get the joystick to work though, but this might be the usual problem of dry joints on keyboard pcb. Have tried out my new test cartridge and getting some errors on DMA and joystick ports but I think you need to connect a dongle (like a C64) to fully test it. Also will try out my Sd4st hard drive, be interesting to see if it works on this STE? Really need to take it apart and service/clean it.
Can I ask some Noob STE questions. I thought when a STE was first switched on it runs a memory test before loading TOS? Is this depending upon what version Rom you have, mine is 1.06? Can you connect the mouse and Joystick to the side ports rather than the awful ports underneath the keyboard? Thanks.
@JohnSmith-bh4zx TOS 1.06 is worth upgrading. TOS 1.62 fixes some bugs present in 1.06 which stops the machine booting in medium res. There is also a TOS 2.06 which added a memory test like you mentioned. However, I did find some games compatibility issues with the newer TOS versions. Reflow those joystick ports any get yourself some port extenders! That will save the pain of messing underneath the machine. What were Atari thinking?? 😂 The joystick ports on the side are 'enhanced'. You can't use a normal joystick with them, you would need something like a Jaguar controller. Even then, very few ST games supported them
Great news. Yes, those ports are a pain, but an easy fix. I really need to get myself a test cartridge and give it a whirl. I know with the original Atari test cartridge, there was an external board and loopback connectors for the hard drive port etc, so maybe that's the cause of the errors? I must confess I've never tried an SD card hard disk emulator. From what I've seen though they do look pretty good. I was lucky to find a couple of working Megafiles so I've stuck with those for now
I've got an Atari ST in a packing box.. must dig it out and see what state it's in! It'd be interesting to have a video on storage options for the ST .. I'd not heard of the one you've got!
@@zx85 Well worth digging out! I've done a couple of videos on the Atari Megafiles, Atari's add on hard disk for the ST computers. Here's a link to one of them ruclips.net/video/5feybh8eD2A/видео.html They are hard to come by these days in working condition. I was very lucky to get two 😁
Congratulations, I really like your videos
Thank you 😊. I really appreciate you taking the time to let me know
@@RetroComputingReboot Thank you 😊
Is there any other EMU/System that can be flashed to test out?
Hiya i hope it was okay i sent you a message on your Facebook page:)
Great video and an interesting project for the Beeb.
Thanks John. Its a fun little thing (and no C64's were harmed in the making of it 😊)
I'm getting into restoration of retro consoles/controllers. This vid gives me a lot of motivation to learn.
Really pleased to hear that, and thank you for watching my vids 😊
5:45 what's that tool called that you're using to bend the pins?
Try searching for 'component leg bender' - I don't know if it has a proper name
@@RetroComputingReboot mm it seems like there's a tool called that you can place caps on before you cut them, to bend the legs. But the really nice tool you have, closest things I'm finding are for typewriter repair tools.
@@RetroComputingReboot Ok I think I found out what that tool is called. Which is, Needle Lifting shovel. Or, Watch Needle Remover. Similar tool used for sewing and watch repair.
@darkintelligence6229 Apologies I thought you were referring to someone meeting else - search eBay for 'soldering fork'

you have a nice looking bbc there simon! nice project...i like how you have all of your computers on in the backround ! very good!..
Thanks Mike 😁. This one took quite a bit of restoration. Sadly it was before I started my channel so it was never recorded
My wife doesn't really get all those computers, but she humours me 😂
@@RetroComputingReboot 😆
thats good!
Do you have to flash the pico with the emulator or do you just drop it onto the sd card with roms and start playing? You have to flash the pico, its in the read me.
It needs flashing, but pretty easy via USB
Thats a cool little project. Its crazy to hear the BBC make sounds like that
Thanks. I'm really glad you enjoyed it 😊
Great video build and review as alway. Glad you liked the project and funny you got the same results as me re some of the discs. I found a lot of games music out there too.
Thanks Jon. Glad you enjoyed it. It's a quirky little thing but it is good fun to mess with. I'll have to have a look round for some more music for it. I can't fathom why some of these disks didn't work
@@RetroComputingReboot There are a few games too with SID music if you look around. Can’t remember off the top of my head.
@@jonathangratton4761 Yes I did download the disks but havnt had chance to try them yet 😁
Really enjoyed this video,goid stuff
Thanks for commenting. I really appreciate that 😊
What a remarkable project.. I've just taken a look as how to program the Beeb to make sounds with the SID chip and there's a whole lotta POKE-ing gokng on! Not sure I'll be attempting thjs particular project on my BBC Micro, but what I have done is fitted a volume control.. it can get a bit strident!
Ooh now, a volume control would be very handy!
A whole lotta of POKE-ing is exactly how the C64 did it.
@RobA500 To my shame, I've never owned a C64. Its on my list of things to get though 😊
I havent touched a BBC B computer since 1982 or 1983. I used to type in game programs from magazines for the owner, He would read them out to me and I would type. I got to know a little about the sequence of the programming and would finish before he did on some commands. But that was the last time I ever done programming on a pc. Have no idea now about computer language. A friend had the same BBC B and he was a programmer and used to create security programs for companies
being a Texan, i've never had my greasy paws on a beeb. i'd love to, though.
Yes I think they are really rare in the USA. I don't think they sold many
Funny you should say that. I live in Georgia in the US, and have a model B on the way to me from the UK. Never owned one, so I am looking forward to receiving it.
@Colin_Ames Awesome 😎
I had this!
This is an accurate historical account - I was at MikroGen when this game was being developed and saw all the drama from the inside. Although, I had already moved to developing for Hewson before MikroGen went down completely. The management at MikroGen had a huge bust up over the game. They shouldn't have relied on an external contractor for such an important title.
Wow! Thanks for the comment!! Feel free to PM me on FB or X. Links in channel description. I found it fascinating researching this and would love to hear some of the details
Thank you for sharing. I love your channel.
Thank you. I really appreciate that
Please edit out the 15kHz tone
Apologies 😟. Someone else mentioned that. I appreciate you letting me know though and I'm hoping I have resolved it
da fuck is a micro gen ?

Thank you for the video. Mine should be arriving tomorrow. You demonstrated cleaning better than all the other videos I have watched including taking out the tube. Keep up the good work!
Thanks Eric! I really appreciate that. I hope you enjoy it and find it as good as I have. Tha k you so much for taking the time to comment 😊
Great insight, of who the man really was, but i really wish he wouldn't use that degoratory expression for the greatest most popular sport on the planet FOOTBALL..sounds though as if there were actually different individuals who designed and developed the titles, though the standard policy of massively detailed Manuals was something unique and demonstrated a policy of quality and authenticity and i can say from first hand that this did deter piracy I pirated games but never a microprose game and a ihad a quite a few through the years but i wanted and needed the whole package.........gr8 memories ..my favourite game was never mentioned though that was the i still believe underrated at the time Red Storm Rising .also never mentioned Airborne Ranger which again was so origiinal and refreshing ...he needs to see IL2 Sturmovik and DCS World. though..the immersion has gone through the roof today...but this could of amd probably may well of been Microprose today...thx bruv
I'm really glad you liked it and thanks for the comment. It wasn't a very popular video, so it's especially appreciated 👍 I'm the same as you, I never pirated the Microprose games. You really needed the manuals and keyboard overlays to truly enjoy them. Sorry your favourites were missed. I think my bias creeped in there with my favourites 😆
I wonder if sanding the corrosion away--and then applying a electrostatic-free paint to the shield/corroded areas might make the life of the machine last a bit longer. Love your site!
Thanks, I'm really glad you like it 😊
What brand/type of paint did you use?
I used 'Brillo Colour Spray' - light grey.
Did you blow the dust out of it when you received the HD? I know you cleaned the case--but I didn't see any vacuum or air-cleaning.
I just took everything out of the case and washed it. I then went on to retrobright it in a later vid
When I replaced the fan, the 3 prong connector did not fit onto the motherboard; however, I simply moved it over one "notch" and it slid on. It did NOT lock on--but the fan worked and the computer showed no signs it knew otherwise. No smoke. No fire department.
No fire or smoke is always a bonus 😁
I bought a Megafile 30 from e-bay; it was full of files. I wiped and formatted the drive without even looking at the stuff--for all the obvious reasons. I wasn't worried about viruses (they were rare for the Atari ST series). I just didn't want to spend time reading files from somebody I didn't know!
I couldn't resist. I was just too curious. It was great seeing the dates and where it started it's life 😊
I changed the fans on my Megafile 60 and 30. New fans installed, but the noise really wasn't better. The hard drive, itself, is loud, too. By the way, I posted a DIP switch guide. I can send it to you for your files, if you like. Nice video. Thank you!
@@drcrutch The noise with the new fans is definitely an improvement but I agree, those HDDs are noisy. But I love them anyway 😁. Hard to come by these days too
Absolutely stunning Simon, what an amazing case!
@@TechMadeEasyUK Glad you like it. There was much debate on colours 😁
Thanks for sharing your story. My depression goes back at least 15 years when too many problems converged at once and overwhelmed me. It didn'y help that I also had (undiagnosed at the time) Aspergers. It crept up very slowly - looking back I lived almost in a dream state with constant thoughts about mortality. I'm glad that you got the help and support that you needed. Instead of help, my family told me that there was something wrong with me and that I was not normal. I was criticised for not getting well 'on schedule' because my illness was so dreadfully inconvenient to others. I even had doctors actually laugh in my face when I told them my suspicions that I was on the autistic spectrum. I ended up losing my partner, my children, my career and my home. I did eventually end up finding some sympathetic help from a handful of kind people, but largely the NHS failed me and the damage is done. I ended up paying for counselling privately when I was on income support, as nothing was offered to me. After years of fighting the glacial beauracracy of the system I got my diagnosis, but far too late to save my family. Like you I'm a 52 year old child of the 70s. All I have these days is the comfort of happier times which won't come again. But I do get a taste of it by watching channels like yours.
I really appreciate your comment and I hope the video helped even if just to make you feel less alone. The problem is, in my opinion, that unless you've experienced it, it can be very hard for people to empathise and understand.
Wow... That's a lot of hard work Simon 😮😮
It was but worth it in the end 😊
Cool that this exists. I've still got my original from way back when and can remember not playing it much even after reading the book and instructions that came with it
@@RaceDayReplayGreat that you still have it! . I watched a bit of a walkthrough video on completing the game. Even that didn't grab me as a game worth putting the effort in to play it. Such a shame really
Will you be buying the new Retro Spectrum Simon 😃😃
I actually havnt made my mind up on that. It does sound great and all that. I never bought the Next as it was just too expensive, but I might buy this as I just love Spectrums 😂
It would have made more sense to make it a ram expansion.
Yes probably so. I'm no expert but I'm guessing there were issues here with addressing additional RAM
Hello do you have any link for that tool you are bending the pins with the v shaped one? Thanks good video indeed
Glad you liked the video. The leg bending tool was a gift from a viewer but you can pick them up pretty cheap off eBay with a quick search

@cruxinc Thank you. It's comments like that that inspire me to keep trying and making better vidoes
My time with the Quicko T12 952, over 2 years, was nothing short of great. This miniature station performs. Wasn't even using genuine Hakko tips - just some generics off Scamazon which surprisingly got the job done. Commonly worked on original Xbox's (4 layer PCBs), which I'd consider 'middle of the road' in terms of soaking heat, with 360's, more modern consoles, graphics cards & mainboards making up the higher tier. Recently however, I started transitioning to JBC's platform. Aixun T420D station with a torodial transformer capable of 200W, 245, 210 & 115 handles with the option of using two simultaneously, and finally - genuine JBC tips. Ok, the sleep function when placing the iron in it's stand is a giant plus as well. The 9 tips which came with the Aixun performed 'alright', albeit a little small - even the C245 carts. Seems the station had a heavy focus on microsoldering, featuring none of the traditionally sized, or large tips. Ordered some C245 tips more what I'm accustomed to, however the knockoffs finally bit me. These tips didn't perform at all. Each had significantly varying resistances, & wildly different temperatures. Hence, why I ordered genuine JBC carts... Which still haven't arrived (2 weeks, still not shipped. Bit slow for an official distributor, but oh well). Since I spent such a significant amount on proper JBC tips, figured I might as well order some genuine Hakko T12 tips as well; 4 of my favorites. Even if the Aixun blows the Quicko out of the water like I hope, I'll still be keeping it around. It's too trusted and relatively portable.
Love that! 👏🏻
That looks absolutely brilliant Simon. What a testament to the humble Speccy and you must be so proud of building one from scratch 🙌🏻
Thanks Jon. I'm glad you liked it. And that is for your support making it 😊
