Hello. I love your content and enthusiasm. I have a DR and I’m concerned that it will not lignify before winter. Can you tell me why I do not see the golden color on the branches? It still looks like new growth.

Hi Candice, really useful video. May I make a suggestion; you give great direction on how and when to prune, and you show where the cuts should take place. If you could show video of you making the cuts, and the before and after, this would help solidify the learning. Thanks.

Beautiful tree, I love mine, grew it from a seedling, He's about 7 years old now. I prefer patio Bonsai so it's about 2 1/2 feet and I love its natural shape so much I've never shaped it as It's perfect to me. I'm afraid of losing it I think I would be afraid to mess with it too much lol.

Hey Candice! I've been growing my own Dawn Redwood forest. I've been so afraid to touch it this season fearing I'd ruin it. Then i thought of your video that I'd watched awhile back. I'm so glad i waited, and now feel a bit better about moving forward thanks to you! I really miss your videos, along with the knowledge i gained from watching them. I hope you, and your family are doing well. Like the last comment, if you ever decide to return, I'd immediately tune in! Peace ✌🏿☮️

Hi Candice. It’s the 17th of June, 2024, and I’m getting ready to prune my DR forest. I prepped the 3 year old trees in pond baskets for an additional year, and then hard pruned them above and below ground before planting the forest. The trees are ready for their first pruning and thinning of the season after the first flush of growth. I had to re-watch this episode. It is still the most comprehensive primer on DRs out there, and I thank you for leaving it (and your channel) up. I’m a fan of @Dave’s Bonsai, so I can still see how your forest has developed. I don’t know if you still read the comments, but if you do, thanks again and enjoy your new direction. If you ever make it back to Bonsai, know that I’ll be watching.

I had a thought that keeping the tree upright could work with grow lights shining from below or with it sitting on a mirror with some kind of shade over the top.

Asking about bald cypress because they are so similar. When deciding it's time to prune, how red does the branch have to be? A lot? Just A little? I have fronds that have bifurcated and they are turning color, but not entirely hardened. BTW, I have attached the five rules in my Bonsai Album database. Thanks.

Just wire them up bonsai style, should do it now wile branches are not to thick. Unless your going to prune then wait for the knew growth and wire up

So here I am, a 62 year old man appreciating the expertise on Bonsai, thinking to myself in the 5 rules for Dawn Redwoods, “ Hmmm.. she’s pretty, wish she’d smile more”. Then thought I’d look ahead to see about updates to how the Redwood forest was coming along. Then “BAM”! A year later, and here I’m watching ….. well, there is a lot of smiling. And a LOT of “back budding” …😂. Hey, good for you, and congrats. Hope you’re successful in whatever you do. I would like to ask an opinion about Dawn Redwoods whenever it might be convenient. 🏆

@@Candice.BonsaiScience How nice, thanks! I’ve got two seedlings I’d bought last year, only 1 year old, but wintered over very well, and growing with vigor. At what point should I think about reducing the apex to keep energy going toward the bottom branching? Mine are only a foot tall, but I know you emphasized not letting it get tall just to thicken the trunk, and I know I’m no where near to worrying about that yet. I just didn’t want to waste energy of growing the top at the expense of the bottom, but also didn’t want to damage such young trees. Also, debating getting 3 or more seedlings and making a small forest similar to yours, or just have 2 singles. Not a question per se, but feel free to offer a suggestion. Thanks again! Btw, your videos on how to properly grow and train these are the best sources of info on RUclips and the entire internet, bar none. 👍

At that age let it go wild all year this season and potentially next season also and do an aggressive cut down in fall after the leaves start dropping
