really cool lesson on beeches. Matt's hooks really work so awesome. I got the clear air layer globes and just put one on a fiddle fig today to see how it goes. i probably should have put on a girdling wire, i think Connor had said it gets the trunk to swell a bit too.
I’m diggin your air layer technique. I need to start using the girdle wire more often. I always forget that until I’m at that step, and then I’m too lazy to find a scrap of wire 😏
I know what you mean - I am watching my beech leaves unfurling right now. I keep meaning to do timelapse photos but there is always something more urgent to do first! I've never pinched a beech before so this was another useful lesson as both of mine are now ready for tertiary ramification. Cheers :)
I should try doing an airlayering of an older shrub in the garden, I never thought of that and there are so many older ones so the chance of finding an interesting 'tree' are quite big. My 2 Beeches are starting to wake up as well, each day I have a look (or more than one !) at the buds to see if there's any change. Spring is my favourite season, all the plants that come back to life, all that green, so beautiful !
I will be looking forward to seeing how your crabapple air layer turns out. Partially because you put rooting hormone on not only the upper portion of the ring but the bottom as well.
Love those deciduous types. I have a couple small American Beech I'm messing around with but I've always heard the foliage size and backbudding was a little unreliable, but yours looks great. I will have to watch the progress of your beech. Nice pot.
Spring is exciting and very busy!!
Thanks to Tom for introducing us all to the Ironwood tools!

I have Beech envy. I’ve even tried to grow from seed with NO luck. That Crabapple is amazing. Fingers crossed that your air layer takes.
Nice beech repotting. Tree looking good.
Thanks a lot now I need a beech tree happy spring😮

Very descriptive Candice - eight to ten inches that comes from nowhere to errupt and shoot out. The photographs will be interesting! 🤣

I've never tried those black cups before - seems a lot neater and they definitely go well with the blue nail polish :)

Nice Candice 👍👍
Also, I’ve ordered a grafting knife from Bobcat. Looking forward to having and using one of his cool tools.
Nice little tutorial on graphing. Should take root for you really well.

I’m about to put a couple of air layers on a dwarf lilac that I’ve had growing in front of my house for years.
I hate it when i lose my thoughts mid flow - it is good to watch though :)
Will you water it everyday ? And how long will you cut it off?
Uh oh.
