And that’s why we follow you, we listen to you and we enjoy to learn from you :) I feel safe applying deciduous techniques coming from you knowledge and experience. Thanks Andrew 🎉
I appreciate you representing deciduous bonsai. I live in colorado and my entire bonsai collection has been from native nursery stock gathered over the years.
Great topic for discussion on our deciduous bonsai pruning! Here on the VA coast, I push it to 2nd or 3rd week of August with great success. We have a longer seasons, and ready to bonsai-shuffle to the greenhouse for any unexpected cold snaps.😅
@@rakuyobonsai I would like to see more videos with the others you have. I´m making two Betula pendula from seedling (now 6 years old) and bought a Betula utilis and chopped it down, to see if i can get new branches on it.
Yeah, I don’t touch the potted birch after mid-July up here in Alaska. Even then, whatever grows from here out will most likely die back over winter. But it sure helps to rebalance the vigor. I’m really diggin your content, good sir.
I made that mistake last year when I heavily pruned my European hornbeam late August and as a result had major dieback issues on the tops of the canopy where new buds didn't have time to set.. thanks for the reminder 😅
Excellent info Andrew, really helpful !.. I wanted to also ask again about the hydraulic haul master working table you have in the Video.. you told me it was from Harbour Freight.. I had a look on their Site and they have the same table listed, BUT it Doesn’t have the Same Wheels on it as yours !…they are really Small wheels !.. did you Add these bigger wheels your self ?.. I’m really keen to get one of these, I’ve been looking for a good one for a long time. Thanks again for your help Andrew And keep up the good work. 🙏
Thank you, have I got this right? I'm slightly colder than where you are so I could trim my deciduous Bonsai at repotting time, mid summer and autumn when the leaves brown? Can I do major pruning at any of those times? Thanks, N. Ireland
Rewatching this trying to figure out if I can do another prune on my alder this year, and had a question. Does the vigor and responsiveness to cutting affect your timing? My alders grow very quickly and respond well to my cuts. I'm leaning towards the "too late" side of things, as I'm 2-3 weeks past the timeline that you mention (adding ~1 week for being up the road from you), but still curious about the idea of how the species or particular tree might affect timing.
Bailley got a friend! Congrats buddy!
Yes, Birch is 8 months old and brings the life to the party

Thanks so much for the kind words!
This reminds me to go out and do some necessary pruning on my deciduous trees. Good info, thanks.
The birch is lookin' good 👍🏽
Any time! Thanks!
Excellent video Andrew! All our club members at MBS should watch this.
Feel free to pass it on to the club!

Nice! Good to know the timing of your area!
That Birch is huge. Love them as bonsai.
They’re a fantastic species, I have a lot of them here at RAKUYŌ

Thanks for tuning in!
great info andrew, thanks for this. I better get busy!
You bet!
I think I love your dog!
They're pretty great, Bailey is my oldest and she is 4 years old, Birch is my youngest and he is 8 months old. They make every day exciting!
Very useful information! Thanks. Great tree!
Glad it was useful! Thanks!

Oh no, pruning them early definitely helps to give them time to regrow!
Thanks for the video. Never knew this about final pruning 8ish weeks out before leaf drop. Thanks a lot!
Glad it was helpful!
My maples and ginkgos are some of my favorite trees
They're both fantastic tree species!
our friend under the cart wants to know when it's time to start walking the doggo lol
She got to run a couple miles at the park this morning so she’s recovering from all that fun!

Custom modification
Birch is so big (double entendre very much intended)! Has he calmed down on nipping Bailey’s tail?
Yes he's getting much better, and bigger haha!
👍👍

Yes that's correct

Yes, an alder might be able to be pruned this late. Especially if it is vigorous
How do I determine, or find out, when that date would be for my area in Greensboro, NC?
About 8 weeks before the first frost
Hey Andrew, same timeline window for collecting air layers right?
Yes, and the earlier the better!
I’m in Central Texas 9b. It’s still 90F+ everyday this week in October. Does that mean it’s still ok to do some trimming?
Yes, as long as fall is still a couple months away
