Dont overthink your LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY, and keep it simple!
the second part tp a recent trip i did, I travel to Ocracoke Island in the USA where i struggle to get a nice Landscape photography shot. Perhaps NZ has spoiled me. I decide to not overthink this... and just keep it simple.

Thanks wry much. Kind words indeed. Lovely thing to say. Kind regards and thanks for your continued support. Ewan
Hey Ewan, I found it very informative and enjoyable to watch your process. Although I am a Japan-based photographer, I spent a summer doing theater in the Outer Banks, 20 years ago, and would love to return with a camera! Lovely images and video.
Many thanks. Sure is a lovely place. Regards. Ewan
Need to watch this !
Thanks. Ill be doing another couple of Pano (how and why vids) over the coming months. Regards, Ewan

Hello Ewan, it's nice to see you again so soon. And once again a simple piece of wisdom: keep it simple! How often do I search hard for new motifs - when in fact they are almost always right under our noses... The usual enthralling 20 mins or so while you make such eloquent explanation of your goals for the particular shoot. Plus excellent images that a the result of carefully considered compositions. Thanks for sharing and all the best.
Many thanks Tony. Really appreciate you taking the time to comment and give feedback, to ensure we [creators] stay on the right path or come off the wrong one! Hope you are well mate. Ewan
Absolutely beautiful work, so relaxing watching you compose and listening to your explanation. Lovely images, thank you for another great video 👌
Many thanks indeed. Its a good opportunity to get inside my head, for short periods of time, at a time! LOL You are welcome = ) Kind regards, Ewan
A beautifully crafted video and perfectly narrated, your content continues to inspire me each time. Thank you for showcasing this beautiful coastal treasure.🙏
Wow, thank you. That's truly kind feedback. It's a special place indeed and I have much travel to do over the next 12 months, such as Korea, US again, Canada maybe, UK, maybe Iceland and Norway. ( I might have a new camera to test out! 😉)
Cheers Ewan, really nice Panos. Most of the time, simplicity creates its own beauty. Thanks for making the vids, always a great watch.
Hey Owen. Thanks man. Yep, completely agree and because I print large prints for homes and offices, they have to be soothing to the eye, and hence gentle colour spaces and content. I start with my output and work back the way , which governs how and when I shoot. Maybe back to front... I don't know. lol. Thanks again. Ewan
Nice very very nice images.
Many thanks. I'm glad they work in the eye. Sometimes simple is best. 😊. Regards Ewan.
The first video of yours the RUclips algorithm has served me. Really enjoyed the pace and hearing your considered thoughts. Thanks for sharing, now to binge watch previous videos..
Many thanks indeed and that is great news. Welcome aboard and you'll find that I have the same cadence in most of them. I'd be keen to hear your thoughts as the feedback is really important and is actually what keeps us going. Hey Gary. Thank you very much for the sub mate. I appreciate you having a look and coming along for the ride. Many thanks for your kind comments as well. Kind regards, Ewan
Beautiful shots and I agree, keeping it simple and not comparing with where you usually take the shots helps find new compositions. Just love these beach shots and the blurry shot of the marshes 👍👍👍👍
Hey Marc, hope you are well. It is hard coming from such a majestic place to photograph, as New Zealand… As I do often struggle sometimes when I am not in that environment. The shot of the Morus is backlit as well as sidelit, which accentuates the Orton effect that I put on it. I wanted it a little bit dreamy. Hope I haven't pushed it too far though. Kind regards from New Zealand. Ewan😊
Too many years ago I went to Orkney for a conference on the World Heritage sites. The conference was only three days. My stay in the Orkneys was 3 months camping. It remains the most sublime 3 months of my life. I decided I was going to live there but sadly I chickened out when illness overtook me. At that time I had my first digital video camera and so video was the way I expressed that time resutling in DVD's. With hindsight that was a pity. There was every kind of weather, some sudden shocks but I circumnavigated most of the islands on foot. The landscape images were unmissable, wherever I was but the wildlife was overwhelming. Since then I have lived in many parts of Europe but never encountered such richness. Your video brings it all to mind as I sit here in the Netherlands.
Hey there. Many thanks for watching. Id actually love to do what you did and navigate the islands (most of them) on foot. This way, you would take in the richness as you cannot do, navigating, by other means. Thats aweom that you did that and Im sorry you never got to move ther. Its a lovely place, albeit, erratic (on the weather front indeed) Kindest regards from NZ. Ewan

@@tonyhayes9827 many thanks indeed. That's a lovely thing to see. I try my hardest with everything that I do. The production side of these videos though, it's quite high intensity and take some time for each one. It's an interesting process shooting these, as it affirms inside your own headhow you approach a scene. Quite good for photo photographic growth. Kind regards Ewen and thanks for watching
Neat image of the beach Ewan!

Loved that Ewan...thanks for taking the time to post.
Hey Tim, you are welcome mate. Was pleased with the feel of this one. less frantic in some ways... but thats the chilled vibe of Ocracoke Island i guess! Thanks again. Regards, Ewan
Lovely peaceful video Ewan. Not an easy location for sure but you made it work. I liked the way the dunes folded into the distance while at the same time echoing the folding of the waves. A nice tidy flawless composition.
Thanks Simon. Yeah sure was a lovely place... just not a photo destination. Never wore a watch the entire stay, as truly... time doesnt matter there. Liked the end results from what i had to play with indeed. Hope you are well and thanks for watching! = ) Speak soon - regards, Ewan
Chillin like a villain, I need an escape to somewhere like that away from the stress of NE Caithness 🤣 That rattlesnake creek was bonnie but aw to have a beach, that wins. Mind you I'm no impressed with picking up the camera when half an inch O water is coming at you, if you don't get your feet wet on a beach you're not trying hard enough 😉
LOL, fair point on the 'waater' but the tripod has screw out adjustable spiked feet and i have only just got them free after months, having rusted up... form salt water. (I was actually done anyway). I just ran a work shop North of Auckland and we were for ever dodging the waves, back and forth. ONfe the feet are wet... they are wet! Hiope you are well Andrew. Thinking of coming over next year to run a two day workshop in bonnie Scotland, by which time, I might have a new camera... maybe. Aw ra best! Ewan
Hi Ewan: This was a wonderful, peaceful video. I live in central Canada so getting seascapes for me if not possible. Sometimes on the great lakes we get some opportunities. I really appreciate how you explained looking at the clouds to anticipate what the final image could look like. Keep well . . . Keith (Barrie, Ontario)
Thanks very much Keith. Id love to do Canada at some point on one of my travels. Such a huge country. Though lake views are lovely... the lakes there are usually also massive which can look more like Oceans. Ill maybe do Yosemite and pop up to Canada in 2025. Thatd be awesome! Id need tips on where to go, or more importantly where NOT to go. LOL Taking cues form your surroundings are important, which is why im always looking 360 around me, making sure i miss nothing. Best wishes Keith. Ewan
@@EwanDunsmuirImages Hi Ewan: I have been fortunate to have been able to travel extensively within Canada from a photographic perspective. All of Canada is very beautiful but my personal 'must-see' locations would west coast of Canada. Specifically, the east side of the Rocky Mountains in Alberta which would include Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper. The areas are all part of our National Parks system. The best time to view these locations is late spring (May/June) followed by the fall (mid-September to early October). This area is simply too busy in the summer months. The next location would be the west side of the Rocky mountains in British Columbia. The best area on the true west coast is Vancouver Island (not the City of Vancouver) and the archipelago of the accompanying islands . Everywhere on Vancouver Island is a paradise of ancient large-growth trees similar to the West Coast of the US. It is a very peaceful are inspires amazing opportunities for creativity. To see more about both of these areas, you might to watch videos from RUclipsrs Adam Gibbs and Gavin Hardcastle ( their older videos are the best). The East Coast of Canada is also amazing. Unfortunately, I haven't been to Newfoundland yet and this island would remind you of Scotland. If you need any more ideas please let me know. Cheers, Keith

Wonderful video Ewan. We spend a lot of time on Tybee Island near Savannah, Georgia with similar conditions and subject matter. You’ve inspired me to explore more of this beautiful area with my camera. Thank you.
Thanks Mark. Thats awesome that I have helped with you inspiring yourself! = ) Its great to get out and about. Just keeping pushing through... even when it gets tough. I wish you well my firend! Regards, Ewan
Wouldn't putting the camera in portrait mode every time and zoom further in on the subject give you more detail (and more shots), as you will use the long side of the sensor to max the resolution? Btw, you are a rare 645z shooter like me :-) Just upgraded to the gfx 100s with their two zoom lenses, but I still love the images the 645z creates. I plan to keep using the 645FA lenses with a converter, they should.render great film like shots. AND Great explanatory video. Thanks Ewan.
HI there, yes you are right. Zoom in and get more detail, but unless you are printing pretty large... the interesteing point is why do we do that? I used to do it routinely, to get more detail, but even as I commercially print my stuff to 2.4m regularly... Im not really sure i need to . I use the portrait more, to get a wider field of view as i dont carry multiple lenses with me on shoots often. You raise a really good point though, and is probably worthwhile including that in a future video, as i plan to do two vids on panos soon. One being 'Panoramas - Why' and the other 'Panoramas - How?' Re the GFX 100... blooming nce clean files with that backlit sensor, so well done and good for you. As i negotiate the minefield of my next camera, it will likely be a still bigger sensor, either HAsselblad or Phase oNe, but I will keep my 645Z as i have grown to love these files so much! We 645Zers need to stick together. LOL You take care and thanks for your interaction. Regards, Ewan
@@EwanDunsmuirImages Yes, why do we hunt for more resolution? As a former gallery owner, clients never scrutinised the pixel count but rather the artistic value a photo carries. On the other hand, Ed Burtynskys works have massive resolution. I met his technical advisor at the Saatchi gallery and he explained the effort they put in getting a much detail as possible, and I think in this scenario a super high resolution plays a major part of the excellence in his large prints. It's partly because of his work that I'm inspired to achieve a similar level of details and sharpness (good luck to me), hence my new equipment. The 645z is truly wonderful, yes you and I need to start a fan club :). It's softer and more film like. Mine unfortunately occasionally malfunctions by shutting itself off during long exposures, and I also need to set the date every time I take out the memory card, something is not right. And Rich doesn't seem to offer any service to these cameras any longer. The Hasselblad X2D 100C seems to have better colours than the GFX but may not be as usable in the field as the GFX. The pricey Phase One is a no brainer if only image quality matters. Looking forward to watch your upcoming pano videos, meanwhile I'm scratching my head on how to attach the nodal slider between my camera and tripod! Keep up the great work you do. Jesper
@@bluejesper - Hey Jesper. Thanks for your well thought out and detailed reply. You raise a good point as a curator of work and the artistic value over resolution and as i read your response it got me thinking to content i will likely include in the Pano-why video. One of the reasons I continue to shoot pano often with long focal length to illicate that detail, is that it is interesting to watch purveyors/ client look at my stuff in a gallery or pre purchase situation, in that their viewing distance is no longer 6,7,8 feet, but 12 inches. It seems ot tell a completely different narrative. I did sell a print of Auckland skyline ot a client at 2.4m, who bought it as his penthouse flat was on image,a nd on his balcony, he could see the shape of a person (just) and he determined that by the time and date of shooting that this would have been him. This was approximately 1km away. Incredible huh!? www.flickr.com/photos/eos1969/40936997780/in/dateposted/ Tells a completely different narrative. Il maybe see if i can accomodate this into that vid in some way. Thanks for your time Jesper. Regards Ewan
@@EwanDunsmuirImages Great job on capturing that beautiful image with the massive resolution-it's mind-blowing what a panorama with a high-res camera and software stitching can achieve, unthinkable just a few years ago. Quick question about the nodal slider: How crucial is it to use it for distant subjects like far away mountain ranges, or say, a glacier 100m away? Couldn’t I just mount the camera on a ball head in those cases and still get the same result? Also, would there be a minimum distance for objects in the frame that would require a nodal slider? I’m simply asking because I prefer to carry minimal gear while trekking and also to avoid unnecessary time-consuming setups.
@@bluejesper - thanks man. Whilst every lens will have a nodal slider at every focal length and focus plane - the farther away you go, the less crucial. You can of course, therefore - just shoot from the axis point of the ball head and get away with it. I dont do that as i often hike several hours in, or wait for hours (some times days) and take no chances when it comes to stitching as that would be... a little frustrating. I always wanted to do pano format images in film, but clearly wasnt possible, unless shot with a 617 format camera (which i chose not to buy). New tech has changed the way we treat photography for sure. Kind regards and thanks again. Ewan
Interesting video as usual, with some nice shots. Apologies if it’s been addressed in a previous video, and I mean to ask every time I see one of your videos, but I’ve always been so curious about your choice in focal length for video footage. Assuming it’s a prime lens… what focal length? 50mm or so? Or more? But out of pure curiosity, is there a reason you chose this route?
Hi jeff, Many thanks for your feedback. In relation to your question re lens choices for video. It is multiple fold i guess. First the lens itself is a 55-250mm efs zoom on C size sensor so effectively 80mm to 385mm approx in 35mm ff equivalent. I do this to be different a little in that there are so many landscape photography channels out there who predominantly shoot up close with wide angle lenses. My thoughts are to separate that a little and have more separation whilst making them more relatable buy having less in the background when i am the subject, which allows you to focus on what im saying rather than have wide vistas to distract the attention of the viewer. Additionally, much of my photo shooting is done in the middle to far distance and the longer vlogging length allows me to illustrate what im seeing way out there. I once went on a commercial shoot with FUJIFILM, who sent a film crew with me and i learned a lot about how they shot. this was longer lens with a loose discipline around camera movement, giving a documentary style. I think the longer lens helps with that. Lastly... one account of the longer lens and compression of relative things in frame, I can be more selective about what is in focus and then in Post processing, because Im using an older lens, it gives me a flatter profile to start with before i grade it to be more like an analogue feel clip, with less contrast and distractions. See 5m 21s of the following to demonstrate what i mean ruclips.net/video/m_CKe8u5lM8/видео.html Hope this answers your question Jeff. Regards, Ewan
Gorgeous shots Ewan and another great video with some important messages. The "what the hell is that?" while stopping your vid to look at the Red Velvet Ant gave me a good chuckle 😂, I would have done the same! Also that sunset lighthouse shot would make a freaking amazing vinyl album cover!!

Thanks Gilles. Glad to be back into it too! = ) best wishes. Ewan
So grateful you take your own time to make these Videos Ewan. I love photography and have the technical side but don’t have a particularly artistic eye,so I get a lot of inspiration from videos such as these! Nice to hear a proper accent too, from a fellow Scottish Lad!
Hey there. Thanks very much indeed. Im glad they hit the mark along the way somewhere. Thanks for the appreciation of the time too, that it takes to make these. They are blooming complicated and time consuming, but its feedback like yours that keep 'creators' (dont like the phrase) like me, going. Thanks again. Kind regards, Ewan
Thank you Ewan! Again a very good "instruction" of how to take good photos! First it was a bit of confusing me, to see you walk through all the sand with such "aimless" video moves...but it comes all togehter at the end and it was again the good old Ewan, that we used to know!🤗 And you become a real worls travelling man...😉
Thanks Thomas. I appreciate your continued support. Yeah, story telling is difficult to do, rather than just me talking all the time. I have plenty other travel to do this and next year too, including a workshop in Scotland Mid 2025. Regards, Ewan
Wonderful and inspiring video Ewan. I particularly like the sand dune with the grasses pictures, I thought that the panoramic format of your video worked really well with that subject and the small boat in the bay also looked serene in the same format. A beautiful collection of pictures none the less and am looking forward to the next installment.
Hey Andrew. Thanks very much. Good to have you along for the ride. Ill get ot work on the next one in a couple of weeks. Best wishes. Ewan
Thanks Ewan, this is another great teaching VLOG, with beautiful results. It's great to watch and hear you plan your shots, seeing how you want them to be, in the composition, light, texture & mood. I love all the final images but especially the simplicity of the grasses. Cheers.
Hey Phil, Many thanks for that mate. I shot heaps of B roll for this vid, as i wasnt really sure how it was al going to come together if at all. I enjoyed doing it though. I liked the grass one, with my fav being the red brick lighthouse, possibly because they resonate with me.
Well done, thanks!
You are welcome Mark. Many thanks for having a look. Ewan
Love how you take something that may seem ordinary and show how it is actually extraordinary
Thanks Teriterio = )
Hi Ewan: Thank you so much for creating and sharing this video. I gain so much knowledge and understanding of photography through your detailed explanation behind each of your composition. I am always amazed and inspired to see how you dissect the environment in order to compose your powerful images. Thanks for sharing the memories of your childhood. Lighthouses are such magical and important structures to coastal communities. Keep well . . . Cheers, Keith (Canada)
Hey Keith. Great to hear from, you are welcome. Best wishes, Ewan
Big E, you get all the good conditions sea spray in the air due to the wind, I can only dream of such conditions on the calm shores of the Firth 🤣 That reminds me of the east side of the inter coastal in Florida, sadly before I used a camera. You'd previously mentioned North Ron and I assumed a lighthouse tale, that looked like you watched great light move over that red bricks! Very nice. As was the rest of the video as usual, even the Simon booth impersonation. Cheers for taking us along.
LOL, thanks Andrew. Good to have you along. Ewan
Another great video Ewan...thanks for inspiring us all in your own special way...Rob in Inverness...
Thanks Rob. Appreciate your support. Regards, Ewan
