Orchid House - Fort Lauderdale, Florida
США
Добавлен 7 янв 2019
Hi! I am Olivier and I live in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Welcome to my channel: Orchid House.
My purpose is to share my experiences on how I grow various types of orchids. I grow all my orchids outdoors year-round in a sub-tropical climate. So no cold or cool growing orchids here!
Besides the usual suspects that I grow (Cattleya, Dendrobiums, Phalaenopsis, Oncidiums, Vandas), my "obsessions" are Catasetums, Stanhopeas, Gongoras and Trichocentrums (which are part of the Oncidium alliance). I also recently discovered Aerangis and fell in love too but I struggle to grow them well.
I am sharing my own experiences but if you do something different and it works for you, continue doing what you do. Orchid growing is not an exact science by any means. Also, you have to adjust to your own growing conditions: growing indoors e.g. is a very different environment! ENJOY YOUR ORCHIDS!

Click this link to the video that explains the structure of a Stanhopea lip: ruclips.net/video/-umpqNOdaQg/видео.html I forgot to mention how completely different this species looks within the Stanhopea genus, even compared to the other eight so called "primitive species". This is definitely a "stand-alone" in the genus.

I'm sorry for asking something outside of the discussion but I remember you caring and blooming Peristeria elata. I've had it for few months. It looks to only grow roots by the active root tips I see on the plant. Would this be the time I almost stop watering it for 3 months? (trickle water on edges?) Or should I continue watering as usual? Is the bloom bud the thin upper triangle like protruding bud in the lower edge of pseudobulb? Can it dry out? I'm sorry for bothering you but there isn't that much info about this orchid even if I watched the videos in Spanish with auto English subtitles.. Thank you for your time.
You can go back to my peristeria video and ask the question there but no problem: Peristeria elata is mostly dormant over the winter and you should limit watering. If the bulbs start shriveling, then you can water more. You should not stop watering entirely for 3 months, just reduce the watering. New bulbs only start growing in the spring (which is when you should repot if needed) and the flower spike develops almost at the same time but the spike grows MUCH faster than the bulb. If you live in the northern hemisphere, don't expect a new bulb or flowers this time of year.
@@orchidhouse Thank you!
I appreciate this video, its hard to find info on the catasetum alliance orchids that aren't catasetums.
Mormodes can be grown the same way at Catasetums but in my experience they should dry out between watering and I discovered that tree fern fiber works great. Mormodes rots VERY easily.
amazing
Thank you!
Do you cut the old spikes?
Yes. they never rebloom
Are you still using Tree Fern as a media? Do you us Orchiata bark? Thanks I love your video.
Thank you! I use different media for different orchids. All my Cycnoches, Mormodes and Cycnodes are now grown in tree fern fiber
That basket thing is awesome I’m gonna make one!
Great occupation if you are handy :)
Beautiful orchid ❤❤❤❤
Thank you!
Thank you I’ve been looking for advise like yours. I recently moved into an house where there are orchids growing outside everywhere. I’m learning a lot, thank you.
My pleasure:))
Thought about this video when I came across Paraphaelanopsis denevei for sale. Check out Springwater Orchids, they have available right now.
I very much appreciate you thinking of me. I found one with Orchid Krub from Thailand but I will still contact Thahn at Springwater as his might be more mature. Thanks again

I enjoy your videos very much and I've learnt a lot from you. Thank you! May I ask what's in the pot? is it just charcoal or a mix?
Thank you very much! The medium is a mix of bark, perlite/sponge rock and charcoal
Salut Olivier, mais au fait....as tu d autres passions que les orchidees ? D autres espèces de plantes peut-être ?
Les orchidées me prennent suffisamment de temps en dehors du travail. Nous n'avons que 24 heures par jour après tout AHAH
Oh my God father your orchids are fantastic how i wish i could grow that aso here in my place😅
Beautiful 😍
ALL 3 are Gorgeous but the last one RLC. Cornerstone is one to drool over 🤤

Thanks for the video. I recently bought Labukensis. Just my little plant, I would really like it to bloom. What would you advise to make the plant feel good? Orchids are my hobby too. I live in Lithuania. Is this amazing orchid garden in your home? It looks fantastic. Thank you. My big like & sub.
First of all: be patient! these are slow growers I would mount it and water it every day thoroughly. I water mine twice a day over the summer. If you don't like watering, then it needs to be in a pot but not sure what medium works best. This plant grows in Borneo which is extremely wet, humid and hot. You should also fertilize it more than other orchids. I fertilize mine 3 times per week (always "weakly") over the summer. It needs good light but I don't grow mine in direct sunlight
@ - Thank you very much for the advice. I have a lot of Vandas that just hang around without pots and I also water them daily, sometimes twice a day. So I will have to water them together. And somehow more light will have to be given. By the way, that wonderful garden is at home? Are orchids your hobby or work? Thank you once more.
@@StasysFPV Yes it is my hobby and my home garden. Where do you live?
@ - I live in Lithuania 🇱🇹 Vilnius. I have been interested in orchids for only 2 years. It all started with rescuing dying Phalaenopsis. But the collection is expanding rapidly. I have one hobby - FPV drones. You have a wonderful orchid garden 🪴
@@StasysFPV Thank you and greetings to Lietuva! By the way, I was born and raised in Brussels, Belgium.

Gorgeous cattleyas!! Can you talk a little more about watering cattleyas. I know they like to dry but it’s hard to know when it’s the right time to water when they are potted. It’s easier when they are mounted. I grow them outside in Miami. Thanks!
When in doubt, wait another day. When mounted, you can water every day (except if temps go below 70 F) This is a link to my video on general care for Cattleyas. I hope this helps ruclips.net/video/0OtJ8sGyXUg/видео.html
@ thank you very much!
Your cattleyas are so beautiful! I can only grow my cattleyas indoors and not having much success. I use grow lights and humidifiers and bottled distilled water but have never been able to get a cattleya to flower for me. I'm now trying to grow cattleyas mounted to see if I have better luck. I use MSU fertilizer, Cal-Mag, and seaweed extract but that does not seem to get them to flower. If I can get a cover built over my patio, I think maybe if I could get them outside in the summer, I might have a better success rate. Happy orchid growing from Kentucky, James
Hi James! Greetings to Kentucky! Typically, orchids that do not bloom need more light. I have no experience with grow lights but I would recommend you put them outside during the "good season" (not sure of your weather pattern in KY). You can use shade cloth if they are too exposed to direct sunlight
@@orchidhouse Yes, I bet that lower light is the issue. Mine are in a west facing window with mini blinds open during the day. The grow lights are over the ones away from the window. Hopefully next summer I can figure out some way to put them outside. Thanks
Fantastic Cattleyas
Thank you!
Cattleyas are my favorite orchids. Beautiful blooms and great growing. I like those large clips, where did you get them?
Thank you The large clips came from a local orchid supply store. If you are in South Florida it is Green Barn Orchid Supplies out of Delray Beach. I believe you can buy online as well
These are absolutely gorgeous! 😍 Very well timed too.. I bought a 'No ID' cattleya just today that's about to bloom. It's potted in gravel, looks very healthy but the medium is bone dry. I'm very tempted to water it, but I'm afraid the potential bloom will blast.. help, please?
@@petrichor7121 Thank you! Watering a medium will not blast buds. Buds blast because of insect damage typically. If it looks bone dry go ahead and water it thoroughly and then let it dry out again. good luck!
@@orchidhouse I only just realized I commented in someone else's comment.. so sorry! Thanks for your reply tho! 💚 I'll be saving this video for future reference as well.. really, REALLY loved these plants! 🥰

What beautiful orchids! Thank you so much for sharing this video.
Thank you!
What a beautiful orchid. So jealous . Florida is great for growing so many orchids. Not so much in Minnesota. Two years ago I owned one and fell in love with the scent.
Thank you! Florida is indeed perfect for growing orchids :)
Sir in my country, java islan this plan very to much...
As Always, another great video Olivier so many thanks. Are you or any of your subscribers using Fern Tree Fibre for Cattleyas in pots? I am about to repot a (gifted) Cattley Bowringiana Var. Coerulea which is currently in a kind of Terrestial mix. Currently the plant is doing well and is rather large. Clearly the mix it is in currently is agreeable to the orchid, however, I want to grow this into a specimen plant and as I have Fern Tree Fibre already, I would like to get your thoughts on using that for this incredible Orchid. Many thanks in advance, Helen, Sydney Australia
Hi Helen! Thank you for your kind words and warm greetings to my Australian friends :)) Even if a terrestrial mix sounds a bit "off", my advice would be to keep it as is. When you repot a plant, it is like a person moving to a new home: it is stressful, you need to adjust to changes etc... For an orchid, when you change the type of medium it grows in, you add an extra layer of stress as the roots need to adjust to a new environment, especially when it comes to moisture retention. So if your orchid currently grows well and is happy, just keep the same medium as repotting in itself is stressful enough. Please remember that bifoliate Cattleyas (bowringiana is now called Guarianthe rather than Cattleya but that is semantics: it is a Central American Cattleya basically) are very sensitive to repot timing. You should only repot if you currently have active new root growth... and don't damage the new roots. Best of luck with your beautiful plant. Olivier
@@orchidhouse Thanks so much for the advice Olivier. It certainly is a beautiful orchid and the fragrance is just out of this world. Kind regards, Helen
Nice video. I am preparing mine for the winter rest and found your video when looking up care. I appreciated your description and I liked seeing the whole plant.😃
😊😊😊
Olivier, I have learned so much from watching and noting a better way to grow and care for my small collection. Thank you for your educated information. Respectfully,
I am very happy to hear this! Thank you so much !
I thought my catasetum going into dormancy. It lost all its leaves and I never got a flower spike. I stopped watering it for about 3 weeks now. Today I noticed a flower spike so I watered it. Do you recommend continuing to water it or not. It is a Taiwan Gold. Love all your expert content.
Cycnodes can bloom on leafless bulbs. If the bulb is hard and plump I would not water it. If it is not real hard, you can give a good soaking but do not water regularly. Thanks you for your kind words!
Fantastic flowers. I recently acquired a Dendrobium pendulum, would you please let me know how to get it to bloom. I’m in central Florida. Thank you for all your videos.
Hi! I am not familiar with Dendrobium pendulum but I looked it up in the "Baker & Baker" book on Dendrobium and they recommend * lots of light even full sun. I would try with a bit less light at first to see how it does in your environment but if no bloom = not enough light * lots of water during growing season but drastically reduce watering in winter Good luck!
Thank you! I will give it a try 😊
Is that planted in that big pot , I am about to repot mine? I am enjoying your videos , I watched them last year & still learning

Thank you very much for your input! In the mean time I bought one from Orchid Krub (Thailand) and NT Orchids from Malaysia also carries it. Thanks again!
Hi, I just got V. Pakchong Blue. Is this cold tolerant? I am in San Diego. Thanks.
Yes definitely. It is 63% Vanda coerulea which likes cold nights. You should be good to go for your San Diego winter nights in the low 40's It also has 32% of V. sanderiana which is the opposite: the least cold tolerant of them all. So this cross should be very tolerant of a wide range of temperatures!
Hi Olivier, Tom here. I have a Stanhopea tricornis in a wooden vanda basket. I’m having problems growing it in that I get new growth but as leaves emerge and lengthen the tips get brown as with anthracnose and get stunted. I’ve treated with Thiomyl and Dithane but plant looks terrible. Any ideas? Then I watch your video and you have a plant mounted. You and I have talked about liking mounted orchids. Interested in how yours turns out.
Hi Tom, Frankly I do not advocate the mounting of Stanhopeas. I am giving it a try but they are hard to keep hydrated like that. As to your Stan tricornis, if it is anthracnose, I would try Pageant on them. It may also be that you should adjust the watering. I recommend a really good soaking but then let them dry out out barely (if new growth) and just approach dryness if advanced growths. Monitor the base of the new bulbs. they should get hard and gradually plump up. If they remain soft, it might be that they don't get enough water. I believe it may explain some of those behaviors where new growths systematically abort. Keep me posted
Thanks Olivier. I will try both the Pageant on the anthracnose and your new watering regime. I’ll be in touch.
That is a splendid flower dominant orchid. I want one!
After 4 years, my only Stanhopea FINALLY bloomed and it was a beauty but not as spectacular as yours😍
What a beautiful Stanhopea! Thanks for sharing it in your video.
HI Olivier, I always really enjoy watching your videos even though your growing conditions are very different to here in England. This year, for the first time, I've had a serious problem with thrip damage on buds and flowers. I know you have the same issues from time to time. I wondered what have you have found to be the best approach?
Greetings to England and to you Howard and thank you for your kind words. Thrips are a real bane. I spray proactively every 5 or 6 days all my buds (exception for Oncidiums who are less affected from what i can tell) and I alternate orthene and conserve (spinosad) because if you use the same product over again, bugs develop resistance.
@@orchidhouse Thanks. I thought that might be the case. The problem in Europe is that all the chemicals that you could spot treat really difficult pests have been withdrawn from sale.
What a fantastic collection. Thank you for sharing your plants and knowledge.
Thank you!
That Stanhopea is gorgeous..❤ but I was so distracted by your lovely planters and mounts in the background! I had to refocus..😄
LOL. Thank you!
Hi Olivier, where can I buy the Phal. equestris rosea?
Not certain but it should be widely available. The pink form is the most common one.
