Okay, I never knew how to care for them. Sounds kind of easy I definitely gonna try. Thank you for all the information that was really good. Thank you.😊
So glad to see that you produced this video. I grouped all my catesetums together in order to give them their dry rest period. I do have one that must be on a different schedule because it has started growing. I'm going to wait to repot it and water until the new growth is about 5" tall. I'll watch your video on repotting next. Thanks!
You should repot it now before it starts growing roots but then wait to water it until the new growth is about 5" tall with roots 3 to 5" long. Good luck! You'll do great :)))
@@orchidhouse Thanks. I'll do it. But, I want to repot in tree fern medium. Should I add medium perlite to the tree fern?(I have some on hand.) I have difficulty growing in sphagnum so I prefer other media. Thanks for your help. I had given up on catesetums, however, when I realized many of them can flower multiple times per year I got back into them. Guess I prefer orchids which flower more frequently than once per year for the work that I put into them.
I am not sure tree fern fiber is warranted for Catasetum. It is perfect for Cycnoches and Mormodes. I view it as a perfectly aerated medium, great for rot prone orchids. Obviously, since you don't like sphagnum moss, it might be good to try? Glad you got back into Catasetums!@@patsfreund9164
@@orchidhouse Thanks again for your comments. They are very helpful. As luck would have it the plant I mentioned is a Cycnodes Wine Delight. So I will go ahead and use the tree fern fiber for it. I'll use my bark mix for the Catasetums when they begin to sprout. That has worked for me in the past.
I'm so glad I found your channel. This is amazing. You do a great recap of the care and we get to see your beautiful collection 💖. I just dipped my toe in the catasetum genus and the info was very valuable.
Thank you for your quick answer. But: WHAT IF the BULBS ARE HIGHLY DEHYDRATED yet THEY DO CARRY SOME SMALL GROWTHS (sometimes several along the dry bulb! )? Some small new growths even have some short roots! This is now the end of the summer ! Should I give up and throw the wizened bulbs out? Or IS THERE A CURE???
If new growths appear in summer and there is no active bulb with leaves, I would just treat the plant as a dormant plant and withhold watering entirely and start watering the plant only when the new growths and roots are the right size (like 10 cm). I have plants (especially imported form Brazil which lies in the southern hemisphere with seasons upside down) who have their lifecycle upside down and they are doing fine. The problem you have is that the backbulbs that are supposed to sustain the dormancy with no water (their plumpness is due to water reserve) are severely dehydrated. This means the plant may not survive dormancy. My recommendation: give the plant a good soaking (let it soak overnight for 10 hours) and then withhold water entirely for 2 weeks. The backbulbs should plump up. If they don't plump up enough, repeat every 2 weeks. If the backbulbs don't plump up at all, the plant will likely die. Good luck!
I thought my catasetum going into dormancy. It lost all its leaves and I never got a flower spike. I stopped watering it for about 3 weeks now. Today I noticed a flower spike so I watered it. Do you recommend continuing to water it or not. It is a Taiwan Gold. Love all your expert content.
Cycnodes can bloom on leafless bulbs. If the bulb is hard and plump I would not water it. If it is not real hard, you can give a good soaking but do not water regularly. Thanks you for your kind words!
I have a question☝️It's humid there in Florida all year and there are many rainy days every month, so mounting orchids would be the best and of course natural way to grow them in your tropical zone? Do you really need to put orchids under a roof in Florida? 😊🙏💞
I grow my orchids outdoors year-round but the dormant catasetums cannot be watered and so I put them underneath an overhang OUTDOORS. As to rain, we have a rainy season from mid May til mid October and the rest of the year is a lot less rainy. With climate change, weather patterns have been more erratic though. Humidity is also much lower from November til April
Hi Olivier, This is an update on my previous comment. I watered what I thought were three nearly dead catasetums. I’m happy to report that two bounced back vigorously with a new bulb in each and tall green leaves. They are in 4-inch pots with lava rock, charcoal and bark, topped with a small mesh pot with nutricote granules. One of them has a leaf that is turning yellow, no new roots, and two new bulbs emerging. Should the watering be reduced? Is it time to repot? The third is struggling, has about 4 inches of slender growth but the leaf is slightly curled with brown edges. Is it a goner? I hope it survives because it has FCC lineage. ID tag: Ctsm. John C. Burchett ‘Ursa Major’ Fcc/AOS x Ctsm. Susan Fuchs ‘Burgundy Chips’ Fcc/AOS I welcome your sage advice. 😊
I would not repot as it seems they are in a recovering stage? I don't understand how they can have long leaves and no roots, especially if leaves are already yellowing. I could not find your previous description of the issue. I remember somewhat the discussion we had but I think you posted it on a different video??? So I apologize but it is a bit hard for me to give an adequate response. If your bulbs are plump, your plants should be able to withstand long periods of drought. I would withhold water if there are no roots. You can send me pictures at OlivierFTL@gmail.com. I will delete this email address within 24 hours though.
Great info as 2023 is/was my 1st yr growing cat. All 6 of mine are dormant now in zone 8a and are still in their sphag moss filled, plastic containers. Do you recommend taking them out of that dry, environment now in prep for new root growth or just monitor for new root growth, then repot?
You can do either. Most people let them in their previous year's moss until it is time to repot. I do 50/50 but my criteria to choose are arbitrary and I don't want to confuse you. I have not noticed any difference. Monitoring for new growth is needed in both instances though.
Hello and happy new year Please help me for my cycnodes jumbo puff starts growing new shoots on top of the last branch instead of on the bottom thank you 🥂👍🏻
Is it growing a new spike (flowers) or a new growth (bulb) ? If a spike/flower, that is normal, if it is a new growth, then the bulb might be rotting at the base???
@@orchidhouse no Sir the bulb is fat and tall around 40 cm and this year produces two time flowers! now at 35cm Height is started to grow her new bulb that is too fare from the flower pot💔 Thank you for your time and guidance🌹
Yes! The only caveat I would add is that Cycnoches, Mormodes and Cycnodes (which is the combo of both) are all very rot prone. So, I recommend you let them dry out every time during the growing season rather than keep them wet at all times like Catasetums but besides this, exactly the same pattern and life cycle. I started using tree fern fiber with great success on all three by the way
Same thing: when they start growing a new bulb when they come out of dormancy. Do not focus on the winter timeline. It is just an indication as most go dormant during that time but I have had Catasetums going dormant in the summer for whatever reason. I just stop watering then, repot when a new growth appears and start watering when the new growth is 3" to 5" (8 t 12 cm) with big roots@@kevinseo4182
Please help! my catasetums are very dry: for at least 3 summer months they has-been exposed to hot dry sun conditions (island in the south Mediterranean). They have sprouts and even some roots but they are wizened and shrunken. I spray them once a day but no great change! What can I do? They are different hybrids.
When the Catasetums are in growing mode (new bulbs that are around 10 cm high with roots around 10 cm long), they should remain moist the whole growing season until their leaves turn yellow. So if you live on a dry island, you need to water them every day.
Thank you for the great information!!!!
