I first heard this engine in Chris Amon"s MS 120 F1 car at Buenos Aires 1971. You knew where it was at all times even when you didn't see it, for the piercing sound cut through all the Cosworths. I was 11 years old and it was one of the greatest experiences I ever had on a race track.
@@ernestogasulla7763 Same here at Monza raceway. When talking about sound, both in F1 and Sport prototype races these french engines were in a class of their own.Expressing sheer power yet sounding as a violin 🏁
Hearing this takes me back to my first Le Mans, 1972. The sound grew in intensity as the car came down Mulsanne Straight. Echoing off the trees it grew louder and louder until the cars hit the braking point for Mulsanne corner, then down through the gears into sight at Mulsanne then accelerate hard down towards Indianapolis. Awesome sound that will live with me forever.
@@MDDeGrande1994 yea, there were definatley some horrific road vehicles! a lot of them looked ok from the front but usually looked horrible from the back
The V12 is an amazing sound. I went in 1970 so missed both the gorgeous GT40's wins (V8's of course but achingly beautiful) and the triple Matra victories. :( A very underrated company. Sad that the Avantime brought about their demise.
I attended the 1972 F1 race at Watkins Glen, a race wee Jackie won by more than half a minute, but is was the sound of the Matra V12 that I remember most of all. Also spent time at "The Bog" which was absolute insanity!
That was horrible indeed. J.Stewart's opinion was that Cevert was probably trying to negotiate the esses using a lower gear (3rd instead of 4th) which made the car over reactive due to engine revving at the top of its power range and they had been talking that issue over.Stewart suggestion was to use the 4th gear at lower engine revs so that the car was less nervous in that segment of the track eventhough losing some split seconds on the qualy lap time.
The V12 has to be the best configuration for an engine ever. Sure, the V10 F1 era produced nice sounding engines too but not quite a V12. If my road car sounded anything like this then I would find every reason to take it out for a drive as I empty more of my wallet pumping gas to keep driving it.
Can someone explain to me why does these classic racing cars exite me more than the modern ones even though the modern ones are way faster? And I'm not am old geezer. I'm 37.
I've heard one of the former F1 drivers say that current cars are too fast, you cannot appreciate the driver handling a machine anymore. Also, high pitched engine sound will always be more emotional
Amazing car and amazing sound. However, there is on thing that strikes me: at 0:20, we can se two "Girling" stickers on the back of the car. Shouldn't it be Ferodo all life, on a French car of that period?
Heard Chris amons Matra/Simca at oesterreich ring ( knittlefeld-Zeltweg) F1 1972 ( ? Hope I’m right) my memory is it was not so much a sound but felt like a dentist was drilling my ear drum -
Back when race cars was dangerous, and drivers was brave and then some. Today cars can drive them self, and the drivers are pampered overpaid pretty boys.
Is there a better sound?
No, there isn't.
Yes : two Matra MS 670..
Though they're 10 a penny, relatively speaking, I don't think a DFV in its sweet spot can be beaten for sound
@@elbecko7969 A DFV is no comparison to this! :) That exhaust note pitch is perfection itself!
@@jemsport It's subjective really. I think there's more subtlety and musical dimensions with the DFV at certain revs.

Without a doubt, the best sounding car of the 1970's.
You obviously never hear my Anglia when the manifold rusted through 😉
Porsche 917Ks need to speak to you. However, this does sound incredible
@@IamSnehan The 917 would be right up there with the Matra as well as the Ferrari 312T cars
@@IamSnehan my father had the luck to hear both in 1970 and he said you could hear the matra the entire lap, it's the loudest of the two

Matra. They came, they saw, they conquered and then they were gone. And that V12 engine is nothing short of AWESOME!!
One of the finest musical instruments ever produced. In the hands of a master, a symphonic delight to behold 😊
What a stunning car with a stunning sound the 70/ really was a beautiful decade
for cars yes, for people not so good

Tehy also built the first Espace, a big success. Both Espace and Avantime were Renault cars.

Fabulous sound!
Não sei porque, mas a Matra é sempre um prazer de ver e ouvir. Sempre me pareceram a frente de seu tempo.
I love how the Matra V12 sounds, it's like if someone asks for the atypical F1 engine sound - THAT'S the sound you play them!
The finest of french engeneering back then
Beautiful.
Gotta love the V12 downshifts 🙃
Amazing French Car with the French Drivers in the 70's but sadly Cevert lost his life at the 1973 US Grand Prix at Watkins Glen during practice 😢.
