1700miles in a Tiny Speedboat - part3

  • We finally get back out to sea to take on Portland Bill and continue our 1700mile journey around the UK, despite it being the middle of winter. In this episode we pick up where we left off in Weymouth and attempt to travel 65 miles to Paignton in Devon, stopping in at Lyme Regis to look for Fossils.
Portland Bill is widely regarded as the most treacherous stretch of water in Northern Europe. The tidal stream and it's position in the channel makes it tricky.
    Follow on Instagram / harrydwyerisok
The boat is an old Avon SR4 Searider from 1977. I made a series about restoring it.
I filmed this episode on the Panasonic s1 and used a gopro 7 and the drone is a Phantom 4 pro +.

I;m a landlord and all of my houses were built in 1860. A huge amount of houses and buildings in general here are a lot older than you think. Most towns go back many hundreds of years and the centres of them are usually unchanged in all that time.
Not far from me is Caerphilly castle and that was made in the 1300s and is is massive.

Great video and good to see the safety is improving! As others have said, tie the auxiliary outboard to the rib to avoid losing it over the side. It might be worth using RYASafe Trx to let the Coastguard know your journey, departure and arrival plans. Especially as you get into quieter waters, you should make sure someone knows your plans. Portland Bill can be very intimidating, you could have been much closer inshore at the point you went round (certainly in rougher weather), it stops you being pulled into the race! Looking forward to the next instalment - have a look at the River Yealm when you head towards Plymouth.

Another great episode Harry. Love this series. Word to the wise, I'd personally attach a safety lanyard to the spare outboard so you can secure it to the boat before you lean over the transom to mount it. One rouge wave on the roll when you're over-reaching and the engine will plummet to the bottom. I have seen it done. Not what you want when you're already in a pickle. Best of luck with the journey!

A sacrificial zinc anode helps too. Electricity + salt water + metal = electrolysis. Also known as galvanic corrosion. Fresh water is far less prone to the effect.

Get a drogue (on a bridle so you can safely recover it). You are most likely to break down, or Sod's law says your tanks need swapping, in wind and waves. The boat will naturally weathercock so the transom faces the wind and waves and you'll swamp. Swapping tanks or mounting the emergency engine will be a nightmare - not like the smooth conditions on the test run. So, first sign of trouble - deploy the drogue before you do anything ... Literally the first thing you the think of.
