- A sea expedition to the Red Sand Towers, a series of abandoned world war two anti-aircraft gun emplacements. The towers were built during WW2 to defend london during the Blitz and their rusting remains are still standing out to sea.
In this video my good friend Ben Fogg and I take Goodwin, the newly restored SR4 rib out on her furthest trip yet, nearly a 100 mile round trip from London to the Red Sand Towers, the Kentish Wind farm and round the Isle of Sheppey.
The forts have a fascinating history including once being home to a pirate radio station.

If you don't want to crash and loose your drone next time: set the reference home point to your remote control and not to a certain GPS position ;) otherwise drones are acting very weird when started of moving objects. Cheers from Germany 🇩🇪

Great video Harry, one word of advice is i would invest in a small 5 HP outboard as a backup auxillary engine, just in case of breakdown, it is one thing relying on the RNLI on a nice sunny day but if the weather takes a sudden turn for the worse and you are broken down they might not get to you in time.

Awe, I love this video!!! I live in the US basically smack dab in the middle and have only seen the Atlantic, once from a North Carolina shore, in the middle of the night! Lmbo!! I liled seeing you go up river and out to sea, and of course those relics! Too bad they are not easily accessible and well kept, like a museum for visitors.
What I liked even more was seeing the wildlife, so close and basically accessible to whomever dare and/or venture where you did in safety! I love animals. I have never been out of the States, and have only been besides driving through, in 5 States that I remember and 1 I was born in but left at 2 months old. I drove to NC from Oklahoma, but it was straight through and back to pick someone up, stuck out there, with a vehicle broke down, so it was no more visual that stop and eat and back on the road because I had to get there and back in one weekend, so no visual but Interstate 40...lol!!! So I don't really count having been to those drive through states.

Spent the first 50 years of my life looking out at those forts from my home town of Whitstable. They are a bit like an old friend, somewhat reassuring. Understand from my late father that his brother was stationed out there during WW2 for a while manning one of the searchlights.

i think it maybe more for weather monitoring or something i doubt very much anyone live there
There's power for lighting, you can visit them and go inside and look around one of them.
Also, someone did live there for a month 14-15 years ago. Some artist...

There was a radio station that broadcast from here in the summers of 2007 & 2008. you can find more info on the Maunsell forts here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maunsell_Forts
They've been used for a couple of living art projects since the mid 2000s. Someone spent a month or two living there as an art piece on isolation. There's been a few ham radio projects as well, and there was even a project to restore some of the towers as a gallery / studio space. Some preperation works were actually done for the latter, which ultimately collapsed, but the infrastructure installed for it (a safe mooring point, access stairs, basic floor reinforcements, and the photovolatics IIRC) was what allowed the smaller projects to happen, as prior to that, no safe landing had been possible since the 1960s.

Sitting on the Clair Ridge Platform watching this thinking how much these must of inspired the engineers to design and manufacture the oil platforms of today. Interesting stuff guys 👏🏽👏🏽

Great channel. I subscribed right away. As a teen in the early 1970's I had a inflatable raft, no motor. My trips I camped on the banks and floated downriver. After I stopped at an agreed place, my father would drive up. I loaded all the equipment and off for home. Loose the orange hat. You looked like Elmer Fudd with hair. I would do the around the UK in a second. Be safe, have fun.

Once again a superb film, very well presented and interesting.
Increase the performance and gas mileage of that glorified rubber raft, Bolt on a good quality foil on the cavitation plate of the motor. You'll get on a plane almost immediately and hold a plane with less throttle, and increase your speed. We've done this for over 20 years now on many different boats and they were All greatly improved.
One tip for you before you lift the anchor start the motor because you never know if it is going to start so you dont drift into something with your very nice restored boat. I loved the video btw.

I had always wondered about the Red Sand Towers since I saw them on the 'Ignite' album cover by the New Zealand band 'Shihad'
I'm actually amazed they survived WWII - I mean, they could have been wiped out completely by a couple Stuka dive-bombers - I guess they were not worth the ordnance and am glad they are still standing (hope to see them one day)

I'm no psychologist but I suspect you saw them somewhere, in a picture or something, and you forgot you saw them and during a dream your deep subconscious dredged up that image.

The honda 4stroke that you have on is a very good engine and i would have been surprised to see consumpion of more than 0,5 litres per nautical mile while cruising... Imagine that i have a mariner 75 2stroke on a 4,6meters boat and i dont burn more than 0,8 l/n.m (engine from 1989). Well done on this journey, can't wait for the next one!

This seems like an extended test of the boat and, frankly a logical point to end the series. Perhaps, the next series should be about the various excursions in the boat? Up the river Thames would be nice.

omg loved it. wish you could of got on to one of the towers. i'm hoping to do the same in my 15ft corcord speed boat but i live in Pembrokeshire so not that much to explore and mostly to choppy to get out out to sea. keep up the amazing work.

Good for you , Great video. Bit surprised your not on the plane at 12 knots, I'm usually up on mine at around 8 or 9 knots. Its a slightly smaller boat but.........
