1700miles in a tiny speedboat - Part1

  • After months of restoring the old rigid inflatable speedboat we are attempting to go all the way around the UK. Circumnavigation is 1700 miles, which is a long way in a boat that's only 4m long.
We start in London and head along the River thames before heading South East and down towards Margate, Ramsgate and on to Dover and Eastbourne.
We stop to look at the wreckage of the SS Richard Montgomery, a sunken world war 2 ammunition ship. More on that here:
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Rich...
    More coming in part 2.

As smaller boats go... this seems like a decent option.
Multiple independently inflated compartments with what looks like (and I’m assuming) is a rigid hull. I don’t think it gets much better than that, for the size, in fair weather.

Not sure whether you left on the 2nd part already, but I advice to haul it out and check the bottom aswell. It WILL have sustained damage from beaching on a rocky beach. In general beaching is a very last resort, and even on a sandy beach you want to avoid it at all cost.
The problem with waves smashing over the side you will have with even no wind. there will always be waves near the coast, and you where lucky it was only this much.
You may think this went as bad as it could go, but get this from an experienced sailor, you where extremely lucky.
Tip for next time, do not trust the anchor. No matter how big or small the boat, none of us do trust it, no matter how small or big, all other boats have someone awake in shifts watching whether the boat moves.

I found out the hard way and the expensive way, going out on the ocean is a steep learning curve ,but it gets in your blood it hooked me 28 years ago ,when everything is going well it's just the best

    • @AlohaMilton
      @AlohaMilton 4 года назад +8

yeah, have woken up to a dragging anchor and had to reset it in the middle of the night in strong offshore winds. Leaving the boat anchored, expecting the ocean to play nice with it while your gone, no knowledge of the local conditions and coastal currents. If they persist they are going to see a hell of a lot worse as they get out of the protected short fetch areas to exposed coastlines. I really do hope they dont die, from my experience working commercial sea urchin boats, around 28 foot and with internal foam flotation and fiberglass hulls specificly for working near shore waters safely, it is a very likely outcome that they feel 'safe' in sight of land, and die floating in water with waves all around them unable to even see which way land is. It happens, all the time, they have no idea what they are into here. I had a guy with 30 years experience teach me to pilot a small craft in rough weather, swam varsity and went to league championships, have rescued several people from drowning while surfing and just being 'that guy that is always at the beach or harbor' and nearby when those unfamiliar with the ocean were in trouble. I would not try this trip in that boat, if I had to I would expect it to take months for clear weather for sections, or accept I was risking my life in a boat and ocean not designed for each other where the boat simply may be overwhelmed by conditions that can arise in a minute or two. it really is just a horrible idea, that so many encourage it with no personal experience is just more signs that humanity is done, is rediculous, bent on its own destruction through showing off and talking sh!t without any real life experience or courage to actually accept what we dont know.

I am very sorry to have say this, but this guy here is so absolutely clueless about boating at all 😱
Kudos for the balls to try this adventure in the first place! But with this kind of seamanship, you can be happy if you (and your crew) survive it at all.
Speaking of beaching: not only that this really is a terrible idea in the first place - you also throttled forward until the motor hit the ground 😱
In 9.9 out of 10 cases, this will wreck an Propeller immediately!

Installing a new prop takes about 2 minutes. Do yourself a favour and don't drive around with a broken prop - if you hit smth, trim the engine up ASAP as you might have damaged the axle as well. If you drive around with a bend axle - boom, your gearbox is wrecked. I've worked on boats a lot and these problems were very common but also very avoidable.
Anyways, have a nice trip mate 😀 cheers

    • @AlohaMilton

Lucky they didnt spin it off or they would have been drifting with no engine and have a moment to determine if they were going to be blown into shore or out to sea, wrong decision on leaving the boat for shore could then have been deadly. It is just sort of awful yet mesmerizing to watch city dwelling aloof people I sort of liked for their renovating skills trying to kill themselves taking for granted the kind of thing I once did as a job, working with near shore divers for sea urchin and being good enough to pilot a boat for 'live boating' where I am keeping surface supplied air hoses out of the prop while maneuvering the boat to allow the divers to move more freely on the end of the hose. Its advanced boating skills, to have mastered that and other things and see how assholes think about the ocean, well its hard to pity them given how people are ignoring science these days, ignoring anyone and everyone that did something for real because the snarky 20 somethings know everything now that they have the internet. No internet back when I learned how to identify a large tree trunk log just under the surface and had the reality based decision making time frame to save our vessel. By turning the wheel harder than one ever should and sending the divers flying into the side of the cabin, then reversing the wheel to get the hull to pivot as we did not have enough space to turn away and had to hit the object, but I could make it slide down one side instead of dig into the side and stern as they continued the original turn, so it was an S turn and a deep gash, just pivoting the stern out of the way enough to avoid a breach, fiberglass hull reparable later, boat still under power with a dry engine compartment, and eating at home that night. Ocean is vicious if you have to spend any amount of time in it the laws of averages stack up and you see some gnarly situations.

@@AlohaMilton totally true, there are a lot of shmucks out there with money an a big dream, they don't understand that boating isn't like a car you anchor it an itll stay put lol, theres tides an currents an the spot they took to tie it up over night was just bad bad bad lol, right in the thick of the breakers, like I guess they just didn't understand just how shitty it can get an how fast it can lmao, im glad they made it back tho, maybe they sat back an thought about all the wrong moves they made an might not do it again, shit like that sticks inside ya lol, me myself ive grown up on all kindsa boats from canoes to 80 foot long liners, I grew up on the east coast of the US so I was kinda born into a fisherman type family an I feel blessed to have been taught what ive learnt from good people that showed me just how the water can be, thanks for the comment man, glad to see we still got real boaters that boat for a living out there all over ^^ be safe man, calm winds an fair seas my frient.

Brilliant. I have a 6m speedboat that, about 10 years ago, I had a plan to sail, as a summer project, from the Thames to Greece via the Canal Du Midi. My wife dissuaded me for a raft of sensible reasons. Part of me regrets not doing it but, having been out in deep, rough waters with it quite a bit, most of me is very glad I didn't. Rough, noisy, sometimes terrifying, expensive, often deeply uncomfortable, wet and tiring. Hats off to you for giving it a go!

New subscriber here! Love your channel! The lighthouse boat office foam dig-out was my introduction to your videos. The White Cliffs of Dover are striking! I'm hooked, also. Looking forward to seeing Part 2. Thanks!

Very entertaining blog guys! just love your drone filming, used to water ski in the areas you passed through on south coast and watching drone filming it brings back fond memories. Good luck on your voyage !

Good job you are good at fixing things 😀, you need to trim that motor up near the beach. Nice work, great videography 👍

I really enjoyed your previous videos and I wish you luck with this venture, but I think you are somewhere near the bottom of a steep learning curve ! 10 out 10 for not editing out the worst of the mistakes.
