  • Mamokgethi Phakeng is full professor and Deputy Vice Chancellor of Research and Internationalisation at the University of Cape Town. She has published over 80 research papers and four edited volumes, which have so far been cited more than 1174 times. Her current h-index is 15. She is a B2 NRF-rated scientist, which indicates that she has considerable international recognition. She has been invited to deliver over 30 keynote/plenary talks at international conferences, and as visiting professor in universities around the world (in Australia, Botswana, Canada, Denmark, Finland, India, Italy, Jamaica, Kenya, Lebanon, Lesotho, Mexico, Mozambique, Namibia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Senegal, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, UK and USA).
    She has won several awards for her research and community work, including the 2011 NSTF award for being the most outstanding Senior Female Researcher over the last 5 to 10 years in recognition of her innovative, quality research on teaching and learning mathematics in multilingual classrooms. In August 2014 CEO magazine named Prof Phakeng as the most influential woman in Academia in Africa. She is founder of the Adopt-a-learner Foundation (www.adopt-a-learner.com), a non-profit organisation that provides educational and financial support to learners from township and rural areas to acquire higher education. Kgethi is passionate about people, causes and things - this is visible in the choices she makes about which committees, Foundations and boards to serve on. She is the current President of Convocation of Wits University and trustee of the FirstRand Foundation.
    She has served as national president of the Association for Mathematics Education of South Africa (AMESA) from 2002 to 2006, founding chairperson of the Board of the South African Mathematics Foundation (SAMF) from 2004 to 2006 and secretary and member of the executive committee of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education (PME) from 2003 to 2007.

      all the way in China trying to get this Phd., you such an inspiration Prof. I watch you talk I fall more deeply into academia. This is the time to be female, black and well equipped to take over and make a change. everytime it gets hard I find your interviews me and the rest of the girls are rooting for you

    I like Prof Phakeng to the moon and back. The most energetic Professor I've seen in my life. She lives and breath mathematics

    i am inspired she was among the people who were giving us a motivational talk whn i was in grade 12 nw i would likw to thank her coz her words made me to be were i am today.whn matric 2014 results were released she was there to award me special thanks
