My grandmother and her siblings lived in Old tovil Rd around the 1920s. My aunt not moving out until she went into a residential home many years later in the late 80's, and they had a friend called Mrs maxted . Don't know if it's the same family but will do some checking and let you know if I find out any more.
There is a Mike McCarey making cakes in Maidstone now and if it is Bell Mill ; perhaps his ancestors worked the mill and so the baking trade passed down through family ; ??? anyway if you get a cake haha ; I'll have a slice
The small slate is one of my favorite finds of yours ever. How amazing and personal and potentially very traceable. I love it. To help reveal what is written, try a rubbing just as you would to reveal what is written on an old gravestone. Lots of tips on that through Google. Sometimes oblique lighting works, which is just a matter of finding the right angle with a flashlight (torch to you), best done in a room that is minimally lit so you have contrast. Oh, one more potential tool. Magnification can also sometimes be very useful. A proper magnifying glass or, even better, a loupe and good light. All of the above are non-destructive, so play around with it for what works best. As a general rule, applying anything directly to the item is best avoided. Please let us know, I can’t be the only one curious 😊
My mom used to have a button hoard and she kept them in a tin can. That way we always had a possible match should we loose a button off of our clothes. The orange/red round item might be a knob for a radio (?) instead of a bottle stopper. I used to do slate etching as an art form. When I needed to see scribed marks clearer rubbing talc powder on it brought out the scratched marks clearly. So try putting a generous amount of talc powder on it then wipe off the excess. Maybe even tamp it down lightly before wiping. Baby powder would work nicely but any talc powder that is not plant based should work. The ink will help make the talc powder stand out nicely so do not remove it.
Hi ladies. I live in Maidstone and my oldest children in the 1990's went to an old Victorian style school called 'All saint's school' on Priory Rd and Old Tovil rd is one of the roads off of Sheal's Crescent that passes the old school. Not sure if that helps. I am sure that the building is no longer a school happy hunting xx and Merry Christmas to all the family xx
Good idea! Now if they could only connect to dots to realize that their black light flashlight might do the trick entirely. It’s a multi functional tool if only they’d realize it.
I used to keep my buttons in a canning jar. They were not old, but I would take them off of old cloths, and save them for other projects. Please keep us up to date about the slate, when you do get more information. Love all the little items you find, and you have fun along the way.
Oh for goodness sake girls, do you not see my finger coming through the screen to point at this or hear me say “what’s that? Look over there!” 😂 I could have sworn I saw a pipe bowl at one point. Oh well there for next time I suppose. Can I ask please... Do you ever go somewhere looking for a dump and don’t actually find one there? I’ve looked in a couple of locations that I thought likely recently and only found a modern milk bottle from Greater Nottingham cooperative society 😔 I would so love to find some lovely buttons, beads (especially mourning beads), pipe bowl and doll parts of course! The slate is absolutely wonderful, what a find! I hope you manage to learn the history of the person who wrote on it.
Am I the only one thinking of Apple Pies now ? How do you ladies keep yourselves so reserved while at the dump ? My pile would at least be three feet high by just as wide ! Not, something I'm proud of now that I say it . Great video , thanks .
Some people here spread shaving cream on old tombstones and wipe with a flat edge so what's left is in the imprints...maybe it will work even though letters are rather shallow. Great finds ladies!
That slate is amazing!! What an extraordinary find! I’m looking forward to the coming video on that! I just love your channel! Merry Christmas from Michigan!
Nice finds! Perhaps rub chalk over the board and quickly letting the chalk fall into cracks and wipe off the surface, might work ! The green bottle, you could roll it on clay and make that design transfer.
If you want to read the writing use a black light you can get them off of Amazon really cheap and it shows up all sorts of stuff Love the blog keep it up
Mudmas has been a fine journey, thank you for sharing all of your adventures. You've made some very fine memories while finding delightful treasures, and made many more treasures too. I hope you eventually find out more about the slate. A dusting of baking powder in the cracks should help bring out the letters, while not gumming up or injuring the slate. I'm so looking forward to your mold to see how things turn out. I anticipate that it will turn out lovely. Merry Christmas and a Happy New year!

Wonderful finds Ladies. The slate is fascinating, please let us know if you find any information. I loved watching Kate find all those buttons, the black glass ones are always a favourite. Am so looking forward to tomorrows video! 😀🎄🎅⛄ x
As Jo Metcalf said in the comment section, "There's an (Old Tovil Rd in Maidstone) and I was thinking that is what was written, so I scouted the comments for anything similar and Bingo ! Love the headless vegetarian couple. : ) Glad you rescued them from the muck. You could photograph them with different fresh veggies in place of their heads, such as celery, green onions or some colorful lettuce.. Could be really fun. They look like they have a good sense of humor. Would make for some quirky greeting cards, appropriate for many occasions if blank inside and frameable too. Thanks for all the extra time you've no doubt spent editing and posting the Mudmas series for us, Ladies. You've gone and spoiled us. We're worth it. Right? : )
I’ve always wanted to go To an old bottle dump and dig up bottles but I live all the way in Alabama so it’s hard to find them I love y’all y’all make my dream feel real
The slate is amazing and intriguing! I do hope you are able to figure out the address and search for this person/descendants! Please keep us apprised!! Merry Christmas with best wishes for a healthy and safe new year! NYC
The chain you found is a toilet chain pull for an old fashioned high cistern loo. The buttons might from a burnt rag pile or if a family member had a disease and they had to burn the clothing. It happened with contagious diseases like scarlet fever
Oh I have missed you guys so much!!! My phone broke, so almost three weeks without one!!! Oh l love my bonfire glass and especially the little head!!! What type of paint do I use to color it?? I am excited to see where the child's slate, takes us too!!!! God bless you're family this Christmas ☃️🎄
Gorgeous finds🤗. I always wonder how many times a day you get stung by nettles..you are brave i hate nettles. At 6.03 was that a little dolls face to the left of you? It kept looking at me😏. I wonder if a sprinkle of talc and gently wiped off with your finger would maybe highlight what is written on the slate..its really intriguing. I love things like that. Im really embarrassed at my button collection im quite the hoarder lol 💖🎅🌲
Hi Ladies There is a Beatrice S Macey born in 1891 in Kent. Could be your person. Merry Christmas and may 2021 bring you a safe and healthy world with lots of amazing finds. Wendy Australia xx

Great finds! Wish I could be there. I would have taken all the bottles you left. Of course, I don't know how I would have carried them home. Lol. Have a great day. Hug Sunny cat for me. Stay safe. 🥰🥰🥰
Please keep us informed what you find out about the school slate. It would be great to know about the young scholar.
The green bottle would look amazing with LED fairy lights put up in through the hole!

Love the slate with the name on it - will be very interesting to learn the history! xx
such a lovely video to watch... please know it brought a much-needed moment of joy across the pond in these dark days...
There is a Mike McCarey making cakes in Maidstone now and if it is Bell Mill ; perhaps his ancestors worked the mill and so the baking trade passed down through family ; ??? anyway if you get a cake haha ; I'll have a slice
I can't get over how you both reach into the nettle! My hands and forearms itch and sting just watching.
Maybe rub the slate with chalk and then gently wipe with a damp cloth to leave the chalk in the writing?
thats what i said chalk lol
Oh my, last day of Mudmas:( You have me so spoiled! I love this video, you had some wonderful finds! Thanks for sharing!

There is an Old Tovil Road in Maidstone
Love the dig! So many fun treasures. I would love to be with you but Minnesota is too far away!! Merry Christmas and Happy New year!
Aloha Ladies! Happy Christmas Eve, "Eve"! That Dump is very intriguing! I love that little 💜 shaped bottle! I wonder how it stood upright?
I love this family. Thank you for sharing with us, thank you for your enthusiasm and your good hearts.

I started with my grandmother's buttons in a tin. She had no toys, so I played with buttons. Now my collection is up to 30 gallons.

When you turn the slate just right in the light.....it looks like it says Bell Mill
Maybe dust it with talcum powder or corn starch and wipe it off with a dry cloth? So it lights up the cracks
Good idea! Now if they could only connect to dots to realize that their black light flashlight might do the trick entirely. It’s a multi functional tool if only they’d realize it.
@@nickandlaurihyde oooooo! That’s an even better idea!!
Or if you put a thin sheet of paper on & rub gently over it with a wax crayon it may produce some impression.
@@sarahstrong7174 they said in the video that doing that didn’t yield any successful results.
