You want to put m43b18 instead of n42b20? I mean it is possible but requires some extra effort with electric things. If you want to swap it other way around it’s the same thing. Both engines came out in e46 but electronics changes quite a lot between them. What’s the issue?
Technically all BMWs would fit all BMW engines. There are some exceptions obviously 😉 What would require modification is wiring harness for the engines ECU. The easiest way would be to get rid of EWS and maybe use harness and ecu from e90 because they use only one ecu not two like in e46. Another thing would be throttle. N42/46 have electronic throttle and e36 has a line. You’d need to swap the gas pedal and make wiring for that. It’s doable. I’m very curious about where did you get an idea to do it? Why this engine and why in e36?
That time no but I did it once. Just changed the engine and everything works without need of any mods. You can go to a dump to modify some things in ecu but lambda sensor will sort it out itself mostly anyways ;) now my mum is driving this car with 2.0 and a fuel consumption below 7l/100km
It’s almost the same. They are interchangeable for sure. I had a client who had blown n46 and we put n42 in because it was cheaper. Works exactly the same and it’s not even visible that it’s a different engine. There are few parts that are upgraded but fit both engines. You should have no issues bothering the swap 😉 ecu is important with this one tho so keep that in mind 😁

well done :D did u know if N46B20 its the same engine ? only upgrading of n42 ?:D i have n42b16 in my e46 and will have N46B20 with 170hp :D
